One potential Portland Thorns target in the NWSL draft: Trinity Rodman, daughter of Dennis Rodman
Professional sports are about to welcome another Rodman into the world.
Trinity Rodman has played in the U.S. national team system for years, and helped the United States win the CONCACAF under-20 women’s championship last March, scoring two goals in the final in a 4-1 victory over Mexico.
The Portland Thorns have one pick in the first round (No. 7 overall), one in the second (No. 12), one in the third (No. 22) and two in the fourth (Nos. 32 and 37). The draft will stream live on Twitch starting at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
Last year the Thorns selected Sophia Smith and Morgan Weaver with the top two overall picks. Weaver, like Trinity Rodman, came out of Washington State.
Dennis Rodman won five NBA championships with the Detroit Pistons and Chicago Bulls and was named to the NBA Hall of Fame in 2011.
Washington State freshman forward Trinity Rodman, daughter of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, is among players available for selection in Wednesday’s NWSL draft.
It’s the culmination of a stellar youth career for Rodman, who has made waves on every level she has played. She entered Washington State the No. 1 recruit in the nation in 2020, and notably led Team USA to a CONCAF Women’s Under-20 championship last March, notching two goals in the title game:
Rodman, 18, has long been a standout for U.S. youth national teams, dazzling observers with her speed and finishing ability. She scored eight goals and six assists for the team that won the 2020 CONCACAF under-20 women’s championship last March.
Because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 women’s collegiate soccer season was postponed until the spring of 2021, meaning Rodman was never able to suit up for the Cougars.
The draft has lost some of its luster with the news that Stanford forward Catarina Macario has signed a 2½-year contract with European champion Olympique Lyonnais, but Rodman is among those who are expected to be taken in the first round.
Other possible first-round picks are University of North Carolina midfielder/forward Brianna Pinto, Stanford defender/midfielder Kiki Pickett and UNC defender Emily Fox.
Racing Louisville FC holds the No. 1 overall pick as well as the fifth pick in the first round. Sky Blue FC has three of the first eight selections, including No. 3 and No. 4.
The NWSL draft is Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET and will be streamed live exclusively on Twitch.
