Carmelo Anthony, of the Portland Trailblazers,is having a terrific season coming off the bench, averaging nearly 15pts per game, 3.4 rebounds per game, .75 blocks per game, should be the 6th man of the year. CARMELO ANTHONY HAS AVERAGED 23.20 PPG, 6.4 TRB PG, 2.9 AST PG, AND 27013 TOTAL POINTS, YTD, WHICH IS CURRENTLY 13TH ALL-TIME IN THE N.B.A.
Carmelo Melo haters are going to point to the fact that Portland is 3.6 points worse per 100 possessions when he is on the floor, but the Blazers are walking a razor-thin point differential as a team. Besides that, those numbers might look different if CJ McCollum and Jusuf Nurkic, who would occupy more lineups with Melo, hadn’t missed some 60 combined games.
The bottom line is Melo is still a straight-up shot maker, and in a Portland offense that creates almost nothing via ball and player movement, he is vital as another individual creator. Entering Saturday, Anthony is shooting 40 percent from 3, per CTG, and he is making a lot of those shots inside the clutch situations that have defined Portland’s success.
Via Inpredictable — which defines clutch shots as those that have an “elevated impact on win probability” — Anthony is making 47.8 percent of his clutch 3-pointers with a 56.5 effective field-goal percentage, which is higher than Damian Lillard’s. No, Melo is not Lillard. Nobody is right now. But that is some proper context as it pertains to the massive shots Anthony, as well as Gary Trent Jr., has shown a penchant for making.
The naysayer’s love to criticize Anthony as a ball stopper. Fine. Guess what, he’s scoring 1.02 points per isolation possession, which is significantly better than the likes of LeBron James and Jayson Tatum and the same mark as Chris Paul and Giannis Antetokounmpo. On a team that relies on making tough shots to survive, Melo is still one of the better tough-shot makers around. And with McCollum and Lillard drawing attention in the playoffs, his floor-spacing and timely 3s are going to be huge.
Just like clockwork, Anthony continues to aid his teammates with a spark of offense off the bench when needed, and the embrace of his backup role is a testament to the grizzled veteran. Although his fantasy totals are mostly shot-dependent, his shot volume is high enough to make him relevant in deeper leagues.
March 15, 2021 05:56 PM
Anthony compiled 16 points (6-15 FG, 2-8 3Pt, 2-2 FT), five assists, four rebounds and a blocked shot across 30 minutes in Sunday’s 114-112 loss to the TImberwolves.
The veteran is enjoying an incredible March, averaging 20.3 points, 3.3 assists and 3.0 rebounds over six games. As the first player off the bench for Portland, Anthony is a bona fide candidate for Sixth Man of the Year, despite his age.
March 14, 2021 12:12 PM
Anthony had 26 points (8-14 FG, 2-5 3Pt, 8-8 FT), six assists, two rebounds, two steals and a block across 31 minutes off the bench in Saturday’s win at Minnesota.
Anthony had another strong performance off the bench and has been doing a great job offensively of late, notching 20-plus points for the third time over his last five appearances. He has scored in double digits in seven of his last eight outings and is averaging 18.0 points per game over that eight-game stretch.
March 4, 2021 01:40 PM
Anthony notched 22 points (8-13 FG, 2-6 3Pt, 4-5 FT), four assists and two rebounds across 32 minutes Wednesday in Portland’s 108-106 win over Golden State.
Anthony has had his ups and downs this season, but he’s scored the ball well of late with an average of 17.0 points over his last 12 games. After going for a season-high 29 against Charlotte on Monday, the veteran has now topped 20 points in three of his last four contests.
March 2, 2021 03:40 PM
Anthony dropped 29 points (10-19 FG, 6-10 3Pt, 3-3 FT) and added five steals, three rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots across 32 minutes in a 123-111 win over the Hornets on Monday.
Anthony paced Portland in scoring in the victory, finishing with his highest point total of the campaign. The veteran’s six three-pointers also marked a season high, and Anthony finished with solid contributions on defense as well. The former All-Star has been a bit up and down this season, and his per-game averages of 13.6 points and 3.4 boards — along with a career-worst 40.2 field-goal percentage — have prevented him from being a must-roster player in fantasy.
February 24, 2021 01:12 AM
Anthony posted 24 points (9-17 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 3-3 FT), four rebounds, one assist and one block in 32 minutes during Tuesday’s 111-106 loss to the Nuggets.
Anthony was the leading bench scorer in the game, taking a high volume of shots and scoring efficiently. The performance marked the first time Anthony has scored at least 20 points since he scored 23 points during a Feb. 12 win over the Cavaliers.
February 13, 2021 11:36 AM
Anthony had 23 points (7-13 FG, 3-7 3Pt, 6-8 FT) and two rebounds in Friday’s win over the Cavs.
Anthony helped the Blazers jump out to a 21-point halftime lead, draining three three-pointers and adding an assist, a steal and a block to his ledger in just 20 minutes off the bench. The veteran has scored at least 20 points in three straight games and five of his last six. In that span, he’s averaging 19.2 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.3 blocks while shooting 48.8 percent from the field and 51.6 percent from three (5.2 3PA/G).
February 12, 2021 12:44 PM
Anthony recorded 24 points (9-15 FG, 4-5 3Pt, 2-2 FT) and two rebounds across 26 minutes Thursday in a 118-114 home win over the Sixers.
Anthony established his new scoring high of the season with an outstanding fourth-quarter performance. He recorded 17 points (6-8 FG, 3-4 3Pt, 2-2 FT), which accounted for 58.6 percent of the points Portland scored that quarter. Anthony had logged his previous scoring high with a 23-point performance Tuesday. He needed only one game to surpass it and is now averaging 18.4 points across the Blazers’ past five games.
February 10, 2021 11:24 AM
Anthony registered 23 points (7-16 FG, 5-9 3Pt, 4-5 FT), three rebounds and three blocks across 27 minutes off the bench in Tuesday’s win over the Magic.
Anthony was coming off a woeful two-point effort the last time out, but he has scored 21 or more points in three of his last four contests. This was also a huge game for Anthony, as he surpassed Oscar Robertson to become the 12th-highest scorer in league history. Anthony has been inconsistent of late, but he is showing enough offensive firepower to remain a decent fantasy alternative even if he keeps coming off the bench.
February 6, 2021 01:16 PM
Anthony will come off the bench Saturday against the Knicks.
Anthony has gotten some spot starts lately as the Blazers deal with injuries. However, the team is getting healthier, and coach Terry Stotts will opt to bring Melo off the bench. Over his past five appearances off the bench, he’s averaged 11.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, 1.2 assists and 1.0 steals in 22.6 minutes.
February 4, 2021 11:00 PM
Anthony posted 22 points (8-14 FG, 3-4 3Pt, 3-4 FT), five assists, four rebounds, two blocks and a steal across 31 minutes in Thursday’s win over the 76ers.
Anthony got the chance to start with Anfernee Simons (hamstring) limited and Damian Lillard (abdomen) out, and he delivered in a big way — it was Anthony’s second straight 20-point performance, and he has already reached that tally in four different games. He’s not expected to hit the 20-point plateau on a nightly basis anymore as he did in his prime years, but Anthony should remain a capable scorer — especially if he finds a way to remain in the starting lineup going forward.
February 4, 2021 11:16 PM
Anthony will start Thursday’s game against the 76ers, Blazers reporter Brooke Olzendam reports.
With Damian Lillard (abdomen) out and Anfernee Simons (hamstring) limited, the Blazers will roll with a backcourt of Gary Trent Jr. and Rodney Hood while Anthony and Robert Covington start at the forward spots. This will be the third start of the year for Anthony, who’s coming off of a 21-point performance in Tuesday’s win over Washington.
February 3, 2021 12:44 AM
Anthony notched 21 points (8-16 FG, 1-5 3Pt, 4-4 FT), four rebounds, an assist and a steal across 26 minutes off the bench in Tuesday’s win over the Wizards.
Anthony was coming off three straight single-digit scoring performances in which he couldn’t surpass the six-point mark, but he bounced back in a big way and delivered his third 20-point performance of the campaign. Anthony has struggled to settle into his bench role and has been very inconsistent, and most of his value will depend heavily on what he can do as a scorer.
January 30, 2021 07:40 PM
Anthony will come off the bench Saturday against the Bulls, Chuck Swirsky of the Bulls Radio Network reports.
Coach Terry Stotts will opt to go with Gary Trent, Nassir Little and Robert Covington on the wing. In 14 games off the bench this season, Anthony has averaged 12.1 points, 3.1 rebounds and 1.2 assists in 24.9 minutes.
January 26, 2021 03:08 PM
Anthony finished with 22 points (9-21 FG, 1-6 3Pt, 3-4 FT), six rebounds, two blocks, one assist and one steal in 35 minutes during Monday’s 125-122 loss to the Thunder.
Anthony moved into the starting lineup after Robert Covington (concussion) was ruled out ahead of the contest. The 36-year-old made the most of the playing time, not only putting up meaningful scoring production but also contributing a handful of peripheral numbers. While the long-term value isn’t there for Anthony, he’ll be worth a look if Covington is forced to miss additional time.
January 25, 2021 08:12 PM
Anthony will start at power forward in Monday’s matchup with the Thunder, Brooke Olzendam of NBC Sports Northwest reports.
The start will mark Anthony’s first of the season. He will be replacing Robert Covington (concussion) in the lineup. The veteran forward has averaged 12.1 points and 3.1 rebounds across 25.0 minutes per game thsi season.
January 20, 2021 01:48 PM
Anthony registered 14 points (6-13 FG, 2-3 3Pt), three rebounds, two assists, two steals and a block across 26 minutes off the bench in Monday’s loss against the Spurs.
Anthony has reached the 20-point mark just once this season, but he has scored in double digits in all but three appearances while averaging 24.8 minutes per contest. He might be tasked with a bigger offensive role following the foot injury sustained by CJ McCollum, and that might translate into an uptick in his scoring numbers moving forward.
January 12, 2021 08:56 AM
Anthony recorded 20 points (6-14 FG, 4-9 3Pt, 4-4 FT), five rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals in a 112-111 win Monday versus Toronto.
Anthony was one of multiple Blazers players who took charge in the final quarter. He scored 13 points (4-4 FG, 3-3 3Pt, 2-2 FT) across a seven-minute span en route to Portland’s comeback win. Though no longer in his athletic prime, Anthony could still supply some good value with sporadic performances like this one.
January 8, 2021 04:32 PM
Anthony had nine points (4-9 FG, 1-4 3Pt), three rebounds, three assists and one steal in 21 minutes Thursday versus the Timberwolves.
The scoring effort ended a four-game streak of reaching double-digit points for the veteran forward. Anthony is averaging 12.0 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.1 assists in 24.3 minutes off the bench for Portland this season.
January 2, 2021 11:00 AM
Anthony tallied 18 points (5-9 FG, 3-4 3Pt, 5-5 FT), five rebounds, one assist and one block over 24 minutes in Friday’s 123-98 win over the Warriors.
Anthony has been a top bench player for the Trail Blazers early in the season, topping 15 points in three of his first four appearances of the year. The veteran moved into 14th on the all-time scoring list Friday and is now averaging 13.3 points and 3.8 rebounds over 23.3 minutes per game early in the season.

Who Is Carmelo Anthony?
Carmelo Kyam Anthony is an American professional basketball player for the Portland Trail Blazers of the National Basketball Association (NBA). He has been named an NBA All-Star ten times and an All-NBA Team member six times. He played college basketball for the Syracuse Orange, winning a national championship as a freshman in 2003 while being named the NCAA Tournament’s Most Outstanding Player.
After one season at Syracuse, Anthony entered the 2003 NBA draft and was selected with the third overall pick by the Denver Nuggets. While playing for Denver, he led the Nuggets to the playoffs every year from 2004 to 2010; the team won two division titles in that span. In 2009, Anthony led the Nuggets to their first Conference Finals appearance since 1985. In 2011, he was traded from Denver to the New York Knicks days before the NBA trade deadline. In a January 24, 2014 game against the Charlotte Bobcats, Anthony scored a career-high 62 points, setting a Knicks’ single-game scoring record and a Madison Square Garden single-game scoring record.[2] Anthony was traded to the Oklahoma City Thunder, where he played one season before signing with the Rockets.
Anthony has played in the Olympics for the US national team a record four times, winning a bronze medal with the 2004 squad and gold medals on the 2008, 2012, and 2016 Olympic teams. As of April 2016, he was the US Olympic team’s all-time leader in points, rebounds, and games played.
