Pele backs PSG forward Kylian Mbappe to be his ‘heir

Kylian Mbappe’s Champions League destruction of Barcelona in midweek has seen proclamations of a changing of the guard at football’s most elite level

As Kylian Mbappe completed his hat-trick against Barcelona on Tuesday, so the heir apparent platitudes began again.

Newspaper scribes and the Twitteratti alike rushed to claim that the handover of the world’s greatest player baton was nigh.

And even former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand joined in.

“I just feel he’s the guy now that’s going to take the throne, take the crown, he’s standing alone at the moment,” he said.

“It’s for everybody to catch up to him now.

But he will also know there’s a marked difference between labelling someone a great and billing them as the greatest of an era given that, for the latter, there’ll never be an exact measure.

Someone who knows a thing or two about such debates is Pele and it’s something he discusses in the excellent new documentary bearing his name which is released on Netflix on Tuesday.

“I’ve never believed in the best player in the world,” he says. “To be the best player in the world you need to be better in every position than everyone else. And that’s tricky, isn’t it?”

He’s right, of course, because as talented as Mbappe is, how can we say he’s a better footballer than Virgil van Dijk, Sergio Ramos, Jan Oblak and Manuel Neuer when they are all such different players with different jobs?

We haven’t yet seen whether or not Mbappe can cope with the physical and mental demands of playing in a serious league week in, week out, either, so can we really say he’ll be a better player than Kevin De Bruyne in the coming years?

Both are wonderful footballers but the greatest of the next decade? It’s impossible to say.

As for the debate about The GOAT — the greatest of all time — that’s even harder.

The late, great Diego Maradona will always be part of the great debate

Who knows if Pele and Diego Maradona’s bodies would have coped with the demands of modern-day football like Ronaldo and Messi have been able to?

And, likewise, who knows if Ronaldo or Messi would have achieved what those two achieved playing in a time when opponents weren’t just allowed to kick you but were encouraged to do so?

The political pressure Pele played under was astounding and we’ll never know if that trio or those numerous other great players could have dealt with it as he did.

Maybe, maybe not.

Such debates aren’t just limited to football.

And instead of constantly wanting to proclaim different sportsmen and women as the greatest of all time, we’d be better off simply being grateful to all of them for the magic they’ve given us and will continue to give us.

It’s futile comparing players from different eras. But I would say is, no player has ever singlehandedly ( no pun intended ) turned bang average sides like Napoli and Argentina at the time, into what they achieved with Maradona.

Original Ronaldo, was simblime player…oftern forgotten on these lists.

For me, nobody lit up the stage like Ronaldinho did in his prime. If he was able to stay out of the clubs he would be up there but his compatriot Ronaldo(the OG) is the GOAT. He was incredible for Brazil, Inter, and Real. Simply the best.

Watching the Maradona movie shows the amount of abuse he had to put up with. How he controlled a ball as it bobbled around on a pitch like the local park is amazing.

Kylian Mbappe has already achieved a ridiculous amount in his short career, and he has now been afforded high praise from Brazil icon Pele, who has tipped the PSG forward to become his ‘heir’.

Mbappe’s recent exploits against Barcelona in the Champions League – where he hit a hat-trick at Camp Nou during PSG’s 4-1 first leg victory – has reaffirmed his status as one of the world’s best, and Pele has become the latest to pay homage to him.

And as admirers come, they don’t come much bigger than Pele. The Brazilian is regarded as the greatest player of his generation, and considered by many as the finest players to ever grace the game – and he is backing Mbappe to follow in his footsteps.

“Mbappe can become my heir, and I’m not kidding,” Pele told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “I can see a lot of myself in his ability to play with speed. He’s an attacker who thinks quickly.

“When the ball arrives, he already knows what to do, he already has in his mind where to go and how to guide the game to find the best solution. These are important characteristics in today’s football.”

The French striker has already gone some way to emulating Pele, becoming the first teenager since the Brazilian great to score in a World Cup final when he netted for France during their 4-2 win over Croatia in 2018.

Mbappe and Pele are among an elite group of just three teenagers to have won the World Cup, alongside Italian defender Giuseppe Bergomi back in 1982.

Speculation surrounding Mbappe’s future has been rife in recent months, with the 22-year-old’s PSG contract poised to expire in the summer of 2022.

He has been linked with a move to both Liverpool and Real Madrid, with 90min revealing in December that Los Blancos are confident of landing Mbappe in the summer, with a move for the forward two years in the making.

Kylian Mbappe has already achieved more in his short career than most do in a lifetime, and Pele has admitted that the French star can become his heir.

Mbappe‘s recent exploits at the Camp Nou were sensational as he netted a hat-trick, and with his contract at Paris Saint-Germain set to expire in June 2022, his future could be decided by an American sports-esque free-agent auction.

“Mbappe can become my heir, and I’m not kidding,” Pele told La Gazzetta dello Sport’s Sportweek.

“I can see a lot of myself in his ability to play with speed. He’s an attacker who thinks quickly.

“When the ball arrives, he already knows what to do, he already has in his mind where to go and how to guide the game to find the best solution. These are important characteristics in today’s football.”

This isn’t the first time Pele has spoken fondly of Mbappe, with the Brazilian praising the youngster’s intelligence and pace in April 2019.

“Mbappe, he is intelligent, fast and unpredictable. Many players are technically good, but he plays unpredictably,” he explained.

“He deserves to win the Ballon d’Or.”

 WHO IS Kylian Mbappé

Kylian Mbappé Lottin is a French professional footballer who plays as a forward for Ligue 1 club Paris Saint-Germain and the France national team. Widely considered as one of the best players in the world, he is known for his dribbling, explosive speed, and clinical finishing.

Mbappé began his senior career with Ligue 1 club Monaco, making his professional debut in 2015, aged 16. With them, he won a Ligue 1 title, Ligue 1 Young Player of the Year, and the Golden Boy award. In 2017, he signed for league rivals Paris Saint-Germain on an initial loan, which was made permanent in 2018 in a transfer worth €180 million, making him both the second-most expensive player and most expensive teenager.[4] There, Mbappé won three Ligue 1 titles, two Coupe de France titles, was named Ligue 1 Player of the Year, and has finished as Ligue 1 top scorer twice. He is also the third-highest goalscorer in the club’s history.

At international level, Mbappé made his senior debut for France in 2017, at age 18. At the 2018 FIFA World Cup, Mbappé became the youngest French player to score at a World Cup, and became the second teenager, after Pelé, to score in a World Cup Final. He finished as the joint second-highest goalscorer as France won the tournament, and he received the Best Young Player and French Player of the Year awards for his performances.
