The Lieberman Award preseason list recognizes the top 20 point guards nationwide. Former winners of the award include WNBA stars Sue Bird and Skylar Diggins-Smith.
Barrs was named to the Southland Conference Women’s Basketball Preseason First Team. She is the reigning three-time SLC Defensive Player of the Year.
Last season, Barrs equaled the NCAA single-season record for steals with 191. She currently holds the SLC record for most steals in a career (465) with one more season remaining at Lamar.
Barrs, a first-team all-Southland selection last season, didn’t just dominate on the defensive side of the ball, but on offense as well. She led the SLC in total assists and assist per game, all while averaging 12 points a game.
Barrs is a big reason why Lamar was is projected to finish first in the SLC by opposing coaches and SIDs.
The 20-member watch list will be cut to 10 in mid-February, and five finalists will be presented to the selection committee in March. Lamar fans will have the opportunity to vote for Barrs at www.hoophallawards.com.
The winner of the 2019 Lieberman Award will be announced in Tampa, Florida with the NCAA Women’s Final Four.
