PARIS – Olympic legend Michael Phelps, former Secretary of State Dr. Condoleezza Rice, actor Samuel L. Jackson and French tennis star Yannick Noah head the roster of participants in the Celebrity Match for the 42nd Ryder Cup. The 10-hole scramble will feature celebrities from the United States and Europe and kick off the week’s festivities prior to the start of Ryder Cup, Sept. 28. The celebrity teams will once again blend talent and personalities spanning sports and the arts.
The Celebrity Match will be conducted Tuesday, Sept. 25, at The Albatros Course at Le Golf National from 2-5:45 p.m. CET (8 a.m. – 11:45 ET).
The match will use the following rotation: Holes No. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 14, 15, 16, 17 and 18.
Celebrities from the United States include:
James Blake is a retired American tennis player who had 24 singles finals appearances while attaining a career-high World No. 4 ranking. Among Blake’s successes on the court were reaching the final of the 2006 Tennis Masters Cup, the semifinals of the Beijing Olympics, and the quarterfinals of the Australian Open (2008) and U.S. Open (2005, 2006), as well as being the former American No. 1. Blake was a key performer for the United States 2007 Davis Cup championship team, going 2–0 in the championship tie vs. Russia at second singles.
Samuel L. Jackson is an American actor, film producer and ranked the highest grossing box office star in film history. A graduate of Morehouse College in 1972, Jackson performed skits about racial inequality with a theater company. He moved to New York City where his friendship with Spike Lee helped land him his first movie roles. In 1994, he was nominated for an Academy Award for his role in Pulp Fiction. Jackson has appeared in more than 100 films, and received critical and commercial acclaim for more than two decades.

Nick Jonas is an American singer, songwriter, actor and record producer. Jonas began acting at age seven, and released his debut single in 2002. Michael Phelps is a retired competitive swimmer who became the most successful and decorated Olympian of all time by earning 28 medals, which include 23 Olympic golds. Jamie Dornan is an actor, model, and musician from Northern Ireland. His wide range of motion picture and television roles that span sheriff Graham Humbert in the ABC series Once Upon a Time (2011–2013); and as serial killer Paul Spector in the BBC Two and RTÉ One crime drama series The Fall (2013–2016), the latter of which won him an Irish Film and Television Award for Best Actor in Television and was nominated for a British Academy Television Award for Best Actor.

Laura Flessel-Colovic is a former French Minister of Sports, who served from 2017-18. She was anepée fencer and won five Olympic medals, the most of any French sportswoman. Flessel-Colovic was France’s flag-bearer at the 2012 Summer Olympics opening ceremony in London, which was her fifth and final Olympic competition.
Guy Forget is a retired French tennis player and is currently the director of the French Open. During his career, he helped France win the Davis Cup in both 1991 and 1996. Since retiring as a player, he has served as France’s Davis Cup team captain. Forget first came to the tennis world’s attention as an outstanding junior player who won the 1982 French Open junior title. He turned professional later that year. In 1986, he reached the fourth round of Roland Garros, his best grand slam at that point, and won his first top-level singles title in Toulouse, and was also part of the winning World Team Cup unit. In 1987, Forget and Yannick Noah finished runners-up in the men’s doubles at the French Open.
David Ginola is a former French international soccer player who has also worked as an actor, model and football analyst. A former forward, Ginola played football for 10 seasons in in his homeland before making the move from Paris Saint-Germain to Newcastle United in the English Premier League in 1995. He continued playing in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur, Aston Villa and Everton before retiring in 2002. Since his retirement from soccer, Ginola has been an actor and a regular contributor to BBC, BT and CNN.
Niall Horan is an Irish singer-songwriter and guitarist, known as a member of the boy band One Direction. Niall has involved himself in the sports world a number of times on social media, and on April 8, 2015 he caddied for professional golfer Rory McIlroy for the Par 3 contest prior to the 2015 Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia. Yannick Noah is a retired French professional tennis player who captured the 1983 French Open, and is currently the captain of both France’s Davis Cup and Fed Cup teams. During a career spanning nearly two decades, Noah captured a total of 23 singles titles and 16 doubles titles, reaching a career-high singles ranking of World No. 3 and the World No. 1 doubles ranking (each in 1986). Since his retirement from tennis, Noah has been a popular music performer and as the co-founder, with his mother, of a charity organization for underprivileged children. Noah also is the father of Joakim Noah of the NBA New York Knicks.
Brian O’Driscoll is a retired Irish professional rugby union player. He played at outside center for the Irish provincial team Leinster and for Ireland. He captained Ireland from 2003 until 2012, and captained the British and Irish Lions for their 2005 tour of New Zealand. He is regarded as one of the greatest rugby players of all time.

WHAT IS THE RYDER CUP? In its current form, the Ryder Cup is a competition between one golf team from the United States and a one from Europe that is played every other year. The first Ryder Cup was played in 1927. Since 1979, the competition has consisted of two days of four-ball and foursome matches, and one day of singles matches.
WHEN IS THE RYDER CUP? The 2018 Ryder Cup starts Friday, September 28 and ends on Sunday, September 30.
WHERE IS THE RYDER CUP? The location of the Ryder Cup alternates between Europe and the United States. The last Ryder Cup, in 2016, was in the United States, at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota. This year, the 2018 Ryder Cup will be played at Le Golf National in Paris, France.
HOW ARE THE RYDER CUP TEAMS MADE? In 2018, U.S. players gain points at every non-opposite PGA Tour event, WGC and major through the 100th PGA Championship at Bellerive, concluding on August 12, 2018.
Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Justin Thomas, Patrick Reed, Bubba Watson, Jordan Spieth, Rickie Fowler and Webb Simpson all qualified automatically. Bryson DeChambeau, Phil Mickelson and Tiger Woods were the first three captain’s picks. Captain Furyk made Tony Finau his final pick for the team.
How the Ryder Cup was different in 1927
In 1927, Ted Ray led a team of eight golfers from Great Britain to Massachusetts to face eight golfers from the U.S., captained by Walter Hagen. It was the first Ryder Cup.
Now, 91 years later, captain Jim Furyk leads his U.S. team to Paris to take on the Thomas Bjørn-led European team.
Quite a few things have changed in those 91 years. Here’s a look at how the 1927 and 2018 Ryder Cups differ:
TEAMS
1927: U.S. vs. Great Britain, with eight players on each team.
2018: U.S. vs. Europe, with 12 players on each team.
SELECTION PROCESS
1927: Hagen and the selection committee for the U.S. team used a brand-new selection process, aggregating statistics from each player’s past three years of play. The stats were compiled by Melvin A. Traylor, president of the American Bankers Association, and member of the U.S. Golf Association Executive Committee. Only American-born players were eligible to compete, though it was later revealed that Johnny Golden was an Austro-Hungarian native and had emigrated to the United States.
2018: Players earned points based on winning major championships and money won in majors and PGA Tour events. Here is the official criteria. The top eight automatically qualified on August 12, and captain Jim Furyk selected the remaining four.
TRAVEL
1927: The first Ryder Cup was hosted by the U.S., so the British team sailed from Southampton on the Aquitania, taking six days to reach to Worcester Country Club in Massachusetts.
2018: The 2018 Ryder Cup will be played in Paris. After the Tour Championship, the U.S. team will fly from Atlanta to Paris on a private plane. The trip takes approximately 8 hours, 25 minutes.
COMPETITION FORMAT
1927: The first competition comprised of four foursomes matches and eight singles matches over two days for a total of 12 available points. The U.S. team won three of the foursomes matches and six of the singles (with one halved match) to win 9 ½ to 2 ½.
2018: The competition will take place over three days. Friday and Saturday will each feature four foursome or four-ball matches in the mornings, and four-ball or foursome matches in the afternoon. Sunday will have 12 singles matches. A total of 28 points are available. The first team to 14 ½ wins.
The Ryder Cup is a biennial men’s golf competition between teams from Europe and the United States. The competition is contested every two years with the venue alternating between courses in the United States and Europe. The Ryder Cup is named after the English businessman Samuel Ryder who donated the trophy. The event is jointly administered by the PGA of America and Ryder Cup Europe, the latter a joint venture of the PGA European Tour (60%), the PGA of Great Britain and Ireland (20%), and the PGA of Europe (20%).
Originally contested between Great Britain and the United States, the first official Ryder Cup took place in 1927 at Worcester Country Club, in Massachusetts, US. The home team won the first five contests, but with the competition’s resumption after the Second World War, repeated American dominance eventually led to a decision to extend the representation of “Great Britain and Ireland” to include continental Europe from 1979. The inclusion of continental European golfers was partly prompted by the success of a new generation of Spanish golfers, led by Seve Ballesteros and Antonio Garrido. In 1973 the official title of the British Team had been changed from “Great Britain” to “Great Britain and Ireland”, but this was simply a change of name to reflect the fact that golfers from the Republic of Ireland had been playing in the Great Britain Ryder Cup team since 1953, while Northern Irish players had competed since 1947.
Since 1979, Europe has won ten times outright and retained the Cup once in a tied match, with eight American wins over this period. In addition to players from Great Britain and Ireland, the European team has included players from Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Sweden. The Ryder Cup, and its counterpart the Presidents Cup, remain exceptions within the world of professional sports because the players receive no prize money despite the contests being high-profile events that bring in large amounts of money in television and sponsorship revenue.
The current holders are the United States who won in 2016 at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota, by a score of 17 to 11.
