Serena Williams and Roger Federer were named 2009 World Champions by International Tennis Federation.  This is Serena’s 2nd time receiving the award, she was the world champ in 2002 also.  Roger has claimed the award 5 times. This year Serena won the Australian Open and Wimbledon bring her total to 11th major wins. She also won the season ending WTA Championships in Doha, which clinched the top ranking in the last event of the year. Roger completed a career Grand Slam at Roland Garros and won his 15th Grand Slam title at Wimbledon. The pair will receive their awards at the annual ITF world champions dinner in Paris in June.
Serena not only claimed the singles ITF award, she and sister Venus were awarded the doubles year award with a career total to 10 Grand Slam titles. They join Lindsay Davenport and Martina Hingis as the only players to become singles and doubles world champions in the same year.
Bob and Mike Bryan were named as the men’s doubles world champions for the sixth time in seven years.
