My family and I are ecstatic and cannot wait to get to Fort Collins to get started.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Norvell compiled a 33-26 record in five seasons at Nevada, including an 8-4 mark this year. The Wolf Pack will play Western Michigan in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/game\/_\/gameId\/401331219\">Quick Lane Bowl<\/a> on Dec. 27.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/story\/_\/id\/32771137\/steve-addazio-colorado-state-football-coach-two-seasons-sources-say\">Colorado State coach Steve Addazio was fired last week<\/a> after two seasons in Fort Collins, where he went 4-12. Colorado State, which opened a new $220 million on-campus stadium in 2017, is viewed as one of the best jobs in the conference.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Before taking the Nevada job, Norvell had Norvell briefly spent time in the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NFL\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NFL\">NFL<\/a> as an assistant coach from 2002 to 2006 with the <a title=\"Indianapolis Colts\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indianapolis_Colts\">Indianapolis Colts<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Oakland Raiders\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oakland_Raiders\">Oakland Raiders<\/a> before returning to <a title=\"College football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/College_football\">college football<\/a> at the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"University of Nebraska\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Nebraska\">University of Nebraska<\/a> to take his first ever <a title=\"Offensive coordinator\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Offensive_coordinator\">offensive coordinator<\/a> job in 2004. At <a title=\"Nebraska Cornhuskers football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nebraska_Cornhuskers_football\">Nebraska<\/a>, he helped guide quarterback <a title=\"Zac Taylor\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zac_Taylor\">Zac Taylor<\/a> to win Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year honors and break several school passing records.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Norvell spent a season as the offensive coordinator at <a title=\"UCLA Bruins football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UCLA_Bruins_football\">UCLA<\/a> in 2007, and then served as the assistant offensive coordinator and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Wide receivers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wide_receivers\">wide receivers<\/a> coach at <a title=\"Oklahoma Sooners football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oklahoma_Sooners_football\">Oklahoma<\/a> from 2008 to 2010 before being promoted to co-<a title=\"Offensive coordinator\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Offensive_coordinator\">offensive coordinator<\/a> and wide receivers coach in 2011. Norvell remained at Oklahoma until 2015, when he was hired as the wide receivers coach at the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"University of Texas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Texas\">University of Texas<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> where he held play calling duties. Norvell then spent the 2016 season as the wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator at <a title=\"Arizona State Sun Devils football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arizona_State_Sun_Devils_football\">Arizona State<\/a> before landing his first head coaching job with Nevada in 2017.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2017, Norvell became a head coach for the first time in his career when he joined the <a title=\"Nevada Wolf Pack football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nevada_Wolf_Pack_football\">Nevada<\/a> football program. The team struggled during Norvell&#8217;s first year, going 3\u20139 in <a title=\"2017 Nevada Wolf Pack football team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2017_Nevada_Wolf_Pack_football_team\">2017<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> However, Norvell helped the team rebound the next season, with Nevada going 8\u20135 in <a title=\"2018 Nevada Wolf Pack football team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2018_Nevada_Wolf_Pack_football_team\">2018<\/a>, including a 16\u201313 overtime victory in the <a title=\"2018 Arizona Bowl\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2018_Arizona_Bowl\">2018 Arizona Bowl<\/a> over <a title=\"Arkansas State Red Wolves football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arkansas_State_Red_Wolves_football\">Arkansas State<\/a>. Nevada posted winning records in 2019, 2020, and 2021 as well, and Norvell finished his tenure at Nevada recording a winning record in four of his five seasons. Norvell also led <a title=\"Nevada Wolf Pack football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nevada_Wolf_Pack_football\">Nevada<\/a> quarterback <a title=\"Carson Strong\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carson_Strong\">Carson Strong<\/a> to back-to-back <a title=\"Mountain West Conference\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mountain_West_Conference\">Mountain West Conference<\/a> <a title=\"2021 Mountain West Conference football season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2021_Mountain_West_Conference_football_season#Mountain_West_Individual_Awards\">Offensive Player of the Year<\/a> awards in 2020 and 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On December 6, 2021, <a title=\"Colorado State Rams football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colorado_State_Rams_football\">Colorado State<\/a> hired Norvell to be their 24th head coach and first Black head coach in program history.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Norvell&#8217;s explosive, pass-heavy offensive style came as a stark contrast to previous head coach <a title=\"Steve Addazio\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Addazio\">Steve Addazio<\/a>&#8216;s run-heavy <a title=\"Smashmouth offense\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Smashmouth_offense\">smashmouth offense<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Colorado State football team has\u00a0its next head coach, straight from a Mountain West competitor.
