Sunday evening the Hall of Fame&#8217;s Early Baseball Era Committee announced Negro League legends Bud Fowler and Buck O&#8217;Neil have been voted into Cooperstown. Also voted in were Gil Hodges, Jim Kaat, Minnie Mi\u00f1oso, and Tony Oliva by the Golden Days Era Committee.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Simply put, O&#8217;Neil is a Negro Leagues icon and one of the most important figures in baseball history. A fine player who went to three All-Star Games in 10 Negro League seasons, O&#8217;Neil founded the Negro League Baseball Hall of Fame in Kansas City following his playing days, and he was also the first Black coach in baseball history. O&#8217;Neil died at age 94 in 2006, and the Buck O&#8217;Neil Award is given annually to the &#8220;individual whose extraordinary efforts enhanced baseball&#8217;s positive impact on society, broadened the game&#8217;s appeal, and whose character, integrity and dignity are comparable to the qualities exhibited by O&#8217;Neil.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"MediaShortcode MediaShortcodeTwitter-Tweet none large\">\n<div class=\"MediaShortcode-content\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\"><strong>We\u2019ve always known it, but now it\u2019s official.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Buck O\u2019Neil is Forever Legendary.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Congrats to our late Chairman John Jordan Buck O\u2019Neil on his well-deserved and long overdue induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/CU8qFHLJu3\">pic.twitter.com\/CU8qFHLJu3<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2014 Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (@NLBMuseumKC) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NLBMuseumKC\/status\/1467638101552025601?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 5, 2021<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Hodges, an eight-time All-Star and manager of the 1969 Miracle <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/teams\/NYM\/new-york-mets\/\">Mets<\/a>, was long considered one of the most worthy candidates not yet voted into the Hall of Fame. He played 18 seasons with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/teams\/LAD\/los-angeles-dodgers\/\">Dodgers<\/a> and Mets, including 17 after returning from World War II, and retired as a career .273\/.359\/.487 hitter with 1,921 hits and 370 home runs. He was also considered one of the best defensive infielders of his era. Hodges died at age 47 in 1972.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;When you mention all-time greats in Dodger history, Gil Hodges is among the finest to ever don Dodger blue,&#8221; Dodgers president Stan Kasten said in a statement. &#8220;We are thrilled that he will finally take his place in Cooperstown alongside the game&#8217;s greats and look forward to honoring him next year.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body-ad-0\" class=\"native-story-ad\">\n<div id=\"native_story_flex_top\" class=\"ad-native-story-flex-top \" data-ad=\"native-story-flex-top\" data-ad-unit=\"native_story_flex_top\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23532\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/minnie-minoso.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"188\" \/><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>As with Hodges and O&#8217;Neil, Mi\u00f1oso&#8217;s induction is long overdue. The Cuban Comet was one of the league&#8217;s first Latino players and All-Stars, and he is also considered the first Black Cuban player in the big leagues. He hit .299\/.387\/.461 with 2,110 hits, 195 home runs, and 216 steals in parts of 20 seasons, most with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/teams\/CHW\/chicago-white-sox\/\">White Sox<\/a>. Mi\u00f1oso, a 13-time All-Star, died at age 89 in 2015.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;This tremendous honor would have meant a great deal to my dad, and it means a great deal to us,&#8221; Mi\u00f1oso&#8217;s son, Charlie Rice-Mi\u00f1oso, said in a statement. &#8220;My dad lived the American Dream. He was able to open doors and break barriers all while doing what he loved, fulfilling his lifelong dream of being a major league baseball player. He devoted his life to baseball, to all the fans, to the community and to Chicago, which he loved. He was so proud to be Black, to be a Cuban, to be an American and to be a professional baseball player for the Chicago White Sox. He also would have been so very proud to be a Hall of Famer.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kaat, now 83, pitched a remarkable 25 seasons in the big leagues, winning 283 games and 16 Gold Gloves. He played for five teams but spent most of his time with the Washington Senators\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/teams\/MIN\/minnesota-twins\/\">Minnesota Twins<\/a> franchise, and his 190 wins are second on the franchise leaderboard behind Hall of Famer Walter Johnson&#8217;s 417. Kaat has also had a very long broadcasting career, and he continues to call games to this day for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\" data-is-autolink=\"true\">MLB<\/a> Network.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The 1964 AL Rookie of the Year and an eight-time All-Star, the 83-year-old Oliva retired as a career .304\/.353\/.476 hitter who five times led the league in hits, four times led in doubles, and three times led in batting average. He was twice the AL MVP runner-up as well. Oliva spent his entire career with the Twins and ranks among the franchise&#8217;s all-time leaders in every meaningful offensive category. In the same vein, &#8216;Kitty&#8217; has made an indelible impact on our organization and our fans, from the 15 years he spent with the Twins\/Senators franchise to his time in the broadcast booth.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fowler is widely considered the first Black professional baseball player. He pitched and played the infield in the 1800s and later helped found the Page Fence <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/teams\/SF\/san-francisco-giants\/\">Giants<\/a>, one of the all-time great Black barnstorming teams. Fowler died at age 54 in 1913.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Early Baseball Era Committee covers candidates whose contributions to game came prior to 1950. Joining Fowler and O&#8217;Neil on this year&#8217;s ballot were Negro League stars John Donaldson, Vic Harris, Grant &#8220;Home Run&#8221; Johnson, Dick &#8220;Cannonball&#8221; Redding, and George &#8220;Tubby&#8221; Scales. American and National Leaguers Bill Dahlen, Lefty O&#8217;Doul, and Allie Reynolds were on the ballot as well. All 10 are deceased.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Golden Days Era Committee covers candidates whose contributions to game came between 1951-69. This year&#8217;s ballot included Dick Allen, Ken Boyer, Roger Maris, Danny Murtaugh, Billy Pierce, and Maury Wills in addition to Hodges, Kat, Mi\u00f1oso, and Oliva. All except Kaat, Oliva, and Wills are deceased.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The eras committees consist of 16 members who vote on each candidate, with 12 votes required for induction. The voting bodies include Hall of Fame members, baseball executives, and veteran media members. He was also one vote short in the 2015 Golden Days Era Committee vote. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/news\/dick-allen-will-likely-be-voted-into-the-hall-of-fame-posthumously-heres-why-he-should-already-be-enshrined\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allen passed away at age 78 last December and was one of the greatest hitters of his era<\/a>, authoring a .292\/.378\/.534 batting line with 351 homers in part of 15 seasons. He&#8217;ll be eligible for a vote again when the Golden Days Era Committee meets next in 2026.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Several years ago the Hall of Fame replaced the Veterans Committee with four eras committees that meet every few years. In addition to the Early Baseball Era and Golden Days Era, there&#8217;s also the Modern Baseball Era (1970-87) and Today&#8217;s Game Era (1988 to present) Committees. Today&#8217;s Game will vote in December 2022, then Modern Baseball in December &#8220;The Cuban Comet&#8221; and &#8220;Mr. White Sox&#8221;, was a <a title=\"Cuba\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuba\">Cuban<\/a> <a title=\"Professional baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Professional_baseball\">professional baseball<\/a> player. He began his baseball career in the <a title=\"Negro league baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Negro_league_baseball\">Negro leagues<\/a> in 1946 and became an <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"East-West All-Star Game\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/East-West_All-Star_Game\">All-Star<\/a> <a title=\"Third baseman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Third_baseman\">third baseman<\/a> with the <a title=\"New York Cubans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Cubans\">New York Cubans<\/a>. He was signed by the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Cleveland Indians\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cleveland_Indians\">Cleveland Indians<\/a> of <a title=\"Major League Baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_League_Baseball\">Major League Baseball<\/a> (MLB) after the 1948 season as <a title=\"Baseball color line\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baseball_color_line\">baseball&#8217;s color line<\/a> fell. Mi\u00f1oso went on to become an <a title=\"Major League Baseball All-Star Game\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_League_Baseball_All-Star_Game\">All-Star<\/a> <a title=\"Left fielder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Left_fielder\">left fielder<\/a> with the Indians and <a title=\"Chicago White Sox\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago_White_Sox\">Chicago White Sox<\/a>. The first <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Afro-Cuban\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Afro-Cuban\">Black Cuban<\/a> in the major leagues and the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"List of first black Major League Baseball players by team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_first_black_Major_League_Baseball_players_by_team\">first black player<\/a> in White Sox history, as a 1951 <a title=\"Rookie\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rookie\">rookie<\/a> he was the one of the first Latin Americans to play in an MLB All-Star Game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mi\u00f1oso was an <a title=\"American League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_League\">American League<\/a> (AL) All-Star for seven seasons<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> and a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Rawlings Gold Glove Award\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rawlings_Gold_Glove_Award\">Gold Glove<\/a> winner for three seasons when he was in his 30s. He <a title=\"Batting average (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batting_average_(baseball)\">batted<\/a> over .300 for eight seasons. He was the AL leader in <a title=\"Triple (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Triple_(baseball)\">triples<\/a> and <a title=\"Stolen base\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Stolen_base\">stolen bases<\/a> three times each and in <a title=\"Hit (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hit_(baseball)\">hits<\/a>, <a title=\"Double (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Double_(baseball)\">doubles<\/a>, and <a title=\"Total bases\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Total_bases\">total bases<\/a> once each. <a title=\"Willie Mays\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willie_Mays\">Willie Mays<\/a> (179 steals) and Mi\u00f1oso (167 steals) have been widely credited with leading the resurgence of speed as an offensive weapon in the 1950s. Mi\u00f1oso was particularly adept at reaching base, leading the AL in times <a title=\"Hit by pitch\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hit_by_pitch\">hit by pitch<\/a> a record ten times, and holding the league mark for career times hit by pitch from 1959 to 1985. Mi\u00f1oso, as a defensive standout, led the AL left fielders in <a title=\"Assist (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Assist_(baseball)\">assists<\/a> six times and in <a title=\"Putout\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Putout\">putouts<\/a> and <a title=\"Double play\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Double_play\">double plays<\/a> four times each.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mi\u00f1oso was one of the most popular and dynamic players in White Sox franchise history. He helped the &#8220;Go-Go&#8221; White Sox become one of the premier teams of the 1950s and 1960s. A rare power threat on a team known for speed and defense, Mi\u00f1oso also held the White Sox record for career <a title=\"Home run\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Home_run\">home runs<\/a> from 1956 to 1974.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mi\u00f1oso left the major leagues following the 1964 season, but went on playing and <a title=\"Manager (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Manager_(baseball)\">managing<\/a> in Mexico through 1973. He rejoined the White Sox as a coach, and made brief but highly publicized player appearances in 1976 and 1980. He became the third player to get a hit after the age of 50 and the second player to appear in the major leagues in five decades. Mi\u00f1oso&#8217;s White Sox uniform number 9 was retired in 1983, and a statue of him was unveiled at <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"U.S. Cellular Field\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Cellular_Field\">U.S. Cellular Field<\/a> in 2004. Mi\u00f1oso was elected to the <a title=\"Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cuban_Baseball_Hall_of_Fame#History\">Cuban Baseball Hall of Fame in Exile<\/a> in 1983, and to the <a title=\"Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mexican_Professional_Baseball_Hall_of_Fame\">Mexican Professional Baseball Hall of Fame<\/a> in 1996.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2014, Mi\u00f1oso appeared for the second time as a candidate on the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"National Baseball Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Baseball_Hall_of_Fame\">National Baseball Hall of Fame<\/a>&#8216;s <a title=\"Golden Era Committee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Era_Committee\">Golden Era Committee<\/a> election ballot<sup id=\"cite_ref-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> for possible Hall of Fame consideration in 2015. He and the other candidates including former White Sox teammate <a title=\"Billy Pierce\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Billy_Pierce\">Billy Pierce<\/a>, and two other former players from Cuba, <a title=\"Tony Oliva\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tony_Oliva\">Tony Oliva<\/a> and <a title=\"Luis Tiant\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Luis_Tiant\">Luis Tiant<\/a>, all missed induction in 2015.
