The Tigers went 4-3 during a pandemic shortened season last year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In Year 2 of Sanders&#8217; tenure, Jackson State went undefeated in eight conference games. Its only loss was a five-point defeat on the road at Louisiana Monroe on Sept. 18.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanders has missed multiple games this season recovering from foot surgery.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanders&#8217; son, quarterback <a href=\"http:\/\/www.espn.com\/college-football\/player\/_\/id\/4432762\/shedeur-sanders\">Shedeur Sanders<\/a>, took home SWAC Freshman of the Year honors as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A finalist for the Stats Perform FCS Jerry Rice award, Shedeur has thrown for 2,971 yards, 28 touchdowns and five interceptions. So Dad made it happen, even though he spent the game on a motorized scooter that kept his feet elevated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>\u201cMe calling plays for him and us never being apart for his whole life, I\u2019ve never missed a game. That wasn\u2019t easy, man,\u201d said Sanders, who coached his son all three years at Trinity Christian School in Cedar Hill, Texas. \u201cThis is not only my team at Jackson State, these are my kids.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>\u201cI\u2019m not there for them. It was tremendously tough. Tremendously tough.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>The hug between Sanders and his son was a reminder that he\u2019s as committed to being a father as he is a coach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>\u201cThat was the only moment we shared in our entire high school career and the short college career we\u2019ve had. Everything else has been coach giving him information and asking for information,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cYou have to understand that moment culminated with my condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>\u201cThat kid came to the hospital every day to see me and in the last week he said, \u2018Daddy, I need you back.\u2019 That moment was about that. It was about the years of work we\u2019ve put in and hearing my voice and knowing just what to do when he hears it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>\u201cIt was certainly a dad moment. We scored 21 points, which is a heck of a sign from the Lord to me. Shedeur did what he did and Shilo closed it out. If that wasn\u2019t God having his hand around me and around us in that particular game, I don\u2019t know what it was.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>\u201cIt was a tremendous feat not only by my kids, but the whole team.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>The win clinched the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) East Division and guaranteed the Tigers a spot in the SWAC championship game for the first time since 2013. Jackson State hasn\u2019t won a SWAC title since 2007.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>Sanders remained engaged with the program with daily phone calls, but his top priority was getting healthy. Athletic director Ashley Robinson\u2019s primary job was telling Sanders to take as much time as he needed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p data-paragraph=\"main\"><strong>\u201dI wasn\u2019t able to come up there while I was out. We spoke quite a bit. More so I look forward to Saturdays, I look forward to game day and that kept me motivated and kept me uplifted and kept me inspired,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cMe having my phone and working my fingers and letting them know what we needed to do in the course of the game was phenomenal, too, and seeing the message relayed. The all-conference teams and individual award winners were voted on by the league\u2019s head coaches and sports information directors.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alabama A&amp;M\u2019s Aqeel Glass was selected Offensive Player of the Year while Florida A&amp;M\u2019s Isaiah Land was tabbed Defensive Player of the Year. Jackson State\u2019s James Houston was named Newcomer of the Year. At the conclusion of regular season play he led the SWAC with a 68.7 completion percentage while passing for 2,971 yards (2nd in SWAC), 28 touchdowns (2nd in SWAC) and only five interceptions. Sanders averaged 270.1 passing yards (2nd in SWAC) per game while leading the Tigers to an undefeated 8-0 record in league play and their first SWAC Championship appearance since 2013.-<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Coach of Year<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-23210\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/DEION-HOF-HD-C.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"275\" height=\"183\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jackson State\u2019s Deion Sanders led the Tigers to a 10-1 overall record and a perfect 8-0 mark in SWAC regular season play. Under Sanders\u2019 leadership the Tigers are currently ranked in the top 15 of the FCS Coaches Poll and are also ranked in the top 25 of the Stats FCS Poll. The Tigers claimed the SWAC East Division title for the first time since the 2013 season. For his efforts Deion Sanders has been named a finalist for the Stats Perform FCS Eddie Robinson
