Distributing the total sum amongst 10 players who\u2019ve earned the highest \u201cImpact Score\u201d throughout the calendar year, US$8 million \/ AU$11 million is reserved for whoever has the biggest digital footprint.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Factors considered to determine an Impact Score include the following:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Popularity in Google searches (self explanatory)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Nielsen Brand Exposure rating (metric of value each player delivers to sponsors via total time featured on broadcasts)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Q-Rating (metric of player\u2019s brand familiarity &amp; widespread appeal)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>MVP Index rating (metric of player\u2019s social media &amp; digital channels engagement)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Meltwater Mentions (metric of frequency in player mentions across several media channels)<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-rich is-provider-twitter wp-block-embed-twitter\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-18232\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Michael-Jordan-tiger-woods-300x209.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"209\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Michael-Jordan-tiger-woods-300x209.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/12\/Michael-Jordan-tiger-woods.jpg 381w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>While the official Player Impact Program rankings have yet to be revealed \u2013 nor does the PGA Tour plan to <a href=\"http:\/\/asaptext.com\/orgs\/pgatour\/1017\/browse_file.php?browse_file_name=transcripts\/111970.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">publicise the bonuses<\/a> being cashed in \u2013 it doesn\u2019t take a seasoned sports analyst to figure out Tiger Woods is on track to secure those tasty millions. Being the most prolific professional golfer in the world by a country mile, of course, comes with a 24\/7 news cycle. Throw in a headline-making car accident and it\u2019s pretty much a hole-in-one for the biggest digital footprint.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s where all the major names are projected to place in 2021 according to Andy Wittry of <em>Sports Illustrated <\/em>(who apparently leveraged the power of publicly available data for this breakdown):<\/strong><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><strong>Tiger Woods<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cIt should be no surprise that no one on the PGA Tour drives more Google search interest or media coverage, and no one eclipses his 6.5 million Twitter followers and 2.7 million Instagram followers. A\u00a0PGA Tour spokesperson confirmed that Woods is still eligible for the Player Impact Program.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rory McIlroy<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cMcIlroy is second only to Tiger in Twitter and Instagram following, and he\u2019s third in Google News results, so the four-time major winner and two-time leading PGA Tour money-winner will likely bring home a significant chunk of change from the debut season of the Player Impact Program.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jordan Spieth<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cSpieth excels across social media with two million Twitter followers and 1.6 million Instagram followers, both of which rank fourth among the players examined.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Phil Mickelson<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cThe reigning PGA Championship winner and six-time major champ has shown that it\u2019s not only millennials who have a good handle on social media. His 1.2 million Instagram followers rank fifth among the players examined and his roughly 782,000 Twitter followers were 11th. Only five players have more Google News results, as Lefty continues to drive media coverage.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Dustin Johnson<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cThe #2 player in the world has a combined Instagram and Twitter following of more than two million and he ranks second in media coverage, based on Google News results.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Bryson DeChambeau<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cDeChambeau \u2013 the 2020 US Open champion \u2013 has stayed in the Top 10 of the OWGR for roughly a year, with only one week ranked outside of the Top 10 at #11, and right now, he\u2019s part of the conversation \u2014 however you want to define that, in terms of social, digital, and related media interest \u2014 as much as almost any player on the PGA Tour.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Rickie Fowler<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cAs of early October, Fowler is ranked #125 in the OWGR, with his best finish in the 2020-21 season being a T8 at the PGA Championship. He missed the cut in four of his last nine tournaments and he finished in the Top 30 just twice. But Fowler is still one of golf\u2019s biggest stars \u2014 with stars being defined by the metrics that go into his Impact Score.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Justin Thomas<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201c<em>Golfweek<\/em>\u00a0reported that \u201cit\u2019s believed the formula used to calculate Impact Scores will distinguish between positive and negative coverage a player generates.\u201d When\u00a0<em>Morning Read<\/em>\u00a0analysed the search interest in PGA Tour players using Google Trends, which measures search interest online, search interest in Thomas spiked in January, when he was caught on a hot mic saying a homophobic slur. Thomas and Fowler had the same average score in our\u00a0analysis, so we gave Fowler the edge, given that not all of Thomas\u2019 publicity was good publicity. In an email to\u00a0<em>Morning Read<\/em>, a PGA Tour spokesperson said, \u201cThe Commissioner has discretion to modify a player\u2019s impact score due to negative coverage if needed,\u201d when asked, in general, about potential negative impacts of negative media coverage.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Brooks Koepka<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cKoepka was the world\u2019s #1 player this time last year and he has since dropped as far as 13th in the OWGR, but he climbed back into the Top 10 with three consecutive top-six finishes at the US Open, Travelers Championship, and Open Championship. Among the players examined, Koepka ranks between 8th and 12th in Twitter following, Instagram following, and Google News results.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>Jon Rahm<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cThe world\u2019s #1 player and the reigning US Open winner is still a relative newcomer to the PGA Tour, having turned pro in 2016, but he drives more media coverage than anyone not named Tiger, DJ, or Rory, according to Google News results, and he\u2019s the fifth-most searched player on Google this season, based on Google Trends.\u201d<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-footer\">\n<div class=\"written-by-and-tags border--top display--flex justify-content--between\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"cntr cntr--flex cntr--no-pad related-posts-wrap\">\n<div id=\"post-56525\" class=\"col col--large teaser teaser--large teaser--mob post-56525 post type-post status-publish format-standard has-post-thumbnail hentry category-golf tag-tiger-woods\">\n<div class=\"entry-thumbnail\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"img-responsive wp-post-image\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bosshunting.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/02\/Tiger-Woods-Car-Crash-674x440.jpg\" alt=\"Tiger Woods Car Crash 2021\" width=\"674\" height=\"440\" \/><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"entry-content\">\n<article id=\"article-body\" class=\"w-full main-content__body main-content__body--drop-letter\"><strong>If Tiger Woods takes just a single swing in public this year, the three-quarter wedge shot that was broadcast to the world on social media on Sunday is an $8 million walk-off.<\/strong><strong>\u201cMaking progress,\u201d was the only message attached to Woods\u2019 tweet, but it might as well have read \u201cmaking money,\u201d based on the limited understanding of the PGA Tour\u2019s Player Impact Program. The $40 million (up to $50 million next year) initiative was a response to the growing threat of a rival super league and unlike every other competition, from the FedExCup to the RSM Birdies Fore Love, it is largely based on an aggregate score of social media influence and brand exposure.<\/strong><strong>\u201cSo [Woods] waited until he knew I was gonna be on the golf course AND he doesn\u2019t tag me on the post? Pretty obvious I\u2019m in this Cat\u2019s head.\u00a0 #PiP #$40,000,000.00 #WontGoDownWithoutAFight,\u201d tweet Jim Herman, who has created something of a cult following on Twitter as an anti-PIP hero.<\/strong><strong>The timing of Woods\u2019 post, either by accident or otherwise, is impossible to ignore. Unlike nearly every list and award the Tour doles out, the PIP runs on the traditional calendar and Sunday marked the final official round of 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"teaser_embed\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:node.teaser_article_embed\" data-entity-type=\"node\" data-entity-uuid=\"a2af3afa-fdab-40ea-8cf7-50c33c105d2b\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<div class=\"node node--type-article node--view-mode-teaser-article-embed teaser teaser--horizontal mb-6\" role=\"article\">\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"col lg:col-8\">\n<div class=\"photo\">\n<div class=\"photo\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"image-style-content-section-thumbnail\" src=\"https:\/\/www.golfchannel.com\/sites\/default\/files\/styles\/content_section_thumbnail\/public\/2020\/11\/13\/woods_1920_masters20_d1_teeshot.jpg?itok=cxpz4V5C\" width=\"320\" height=\"180\" \/><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"col lg:col-16\">\n<p><strong>Tiger Woods, just nine months removed from a serious car accident, posted a video to his Twitter account of him hitting a full golf shot.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The brief video also fit perfectly into the nebulous formula that produces a player\u2019s impact score. The score is based on a player\u2019s popularity in Google searches, Nielsen Brand Exposure, Q-Rating, MVP Index rating and Meltwater Mentions. How that list is aggregated is as much a mystery as the list itself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe don&#8217;t have any intention on publicizing it,\u201d Tour commissioner Jay Monahan said in August at the Tour Championship. \u201cTo us, it&#8217;s a program that we created, was created by our players, with our players, for our players, and that&#8217;s what we decided that we were going to do when we created it.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But the program seems to be as secretive to the players as it is to the public and media.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cNo idea,\u201d Herman laughed when asked to explain how the PIP list is created. \u201cI wish we had a list. I wish we knew, so if a guy is on the list and he\u2019s close and had an idea of what they needed to do to crack the top 10. That\u2019s the hardest part for the rest of us. They are throwing a lot of money out there without a real good understanding of how you can crack the top 10. We feel like it\u2019s a popularity contest.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>According to various sources, the Tour will not show the entire list to players but will tell each player where they are on the list, which only seems to fuel the confusion over how the list is compiled.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI can\u2019t explain in detail, but it has to do with social media and news and they are supposed to filter out things that are negative. I don\u2019t know how they do that,\u201d Brendan Steele said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"align-center embedded-entity\" data-embed-button=\"mpx_video_embed\" data-entity-embed-display=\"view_mode:media.video_embed\" data-entity-type=\"media\" data-entity-uuid=\"038078a8-adfa-4e17-b37d-025015ca0b01\" data-langcode=\"en\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-15501\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/tiger-woods-foundation-join-our-cause-555x360-final-300x195.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"195\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/tiger-woods-foundation-join-our-cause-555x360-final-300x195.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/tiger-woods-foundation-join-our-cause-555x360-final.jpg 555w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>The Tour has said that negative coverage, either via social or traditional media, will be filtered out of the formula to create an index score, but there is no clear understanding of how the Tour defines \u201cnegative\u201d media.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Without playing a single event in 2021, Woods is the consensus front-runner to win the PIP. To most, he was the sole reason the list was created.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s a way for Tiger Woods to be rewarded even more for what he\u2019s done for the game of golf,\u201d Chesson Hadley said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But while every player agrees with Hadley that Woods will be atop the PIP list, it remains unclear how his single-vehicle crash in February and the ensuing media coverage of the accident should be factored into his index score.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Monahan explained at East Lake that the point of the program is to get \u201cplayers to engage in our game, help grow our Tour, and help grow their own respective brands.\u201d But where exposure ends and controversy begins, is anyone\u2019s guess.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhat they should have done is taken all $40 [million] of it and sent it to Tiger and say, thank you,\u201d Scott Stallings said. \u201cWe wouldn\u2019t be here if it wasn\u2019t for him. When he posted that picture of himself on crutches it outperformed the last four tournament winners [on social media]. Most players predict Phil Mickelson, Rory McIlroy, Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka will be among the top 10 on the PIP at year\u2019s end and collect a portion of the $40 million pot. Few, however, can explain exactly why.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Of the five criteria used to calculate the PIP only a player\u2019s Nielsen Brand Exposure is even remotely tied to on-course performance. The Nielsen score is based on network exposure on Saturday and Sunday and these windows are almost exclusively limited to those in contention. Exposure from \u201cfeatured-group coverage\u201d and Rounds 1 and 2 is not included in the Nielsen rating.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Google searches are a straightforward matrix and a player\u2019s social media reach, which Woods dominates, is a rough calculation of how many followers they have. But how exactly the MVP Index rating and Meltwater Mentions are calculated is very much a mystery.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It\u2019s that secrecy, not the general concept of rewarding the game\u2019s top players, that doesn\u2019t sit well with some.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhy tell people you\u2019re going to do it and not tell who wins. You are just setting yourself up for ridicule. If they aren\u2019t going to publish who wins or how you can improve [your PIP score], it doesn\u2019t make a lot of sense,\u201d Stallings said. \u201cThat we can just make money randomly appear seems like it would be better served in many of different ways.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Tour never publicly announced the existence of the PIP, but with $40 million up for grabs it was always going to become a talking point both inside and outside of Tour circles. It was also always going to be questioned.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For Herman, it\u2019s been a chance to flex his social media muscle in a unique way. Although the 44-year-old, three-time Tour winner has a limited social media footprint (he has about 20,000 follows on Twitter) he\u2019s become a lively follow with his handle @GoHermie and a subtle observer of the PIP.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI know I have no chance of winning this thing,\u201d he laughed before adding his own top 5 PIP list, \u201cTiger, Tiger, Tiger, Tiger, Tiger.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>By all accounts, Woods didn\u2019t need the 11<sup>th<\/sup>-hour swing video drop to secure his place atop the PIP, which is pretty much the only thing that we know for certain about the program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-15420\"
