He is currently the head football coach at Michigan State University.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He was previously the head coach at the <a title=\"University of Colorado\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Colorado\">University of Colorado<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tucker was the interim head coach for the <a title=\"Jacksonville Jaguars\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jacksonville_Jaguars\">Jacksonville Jaguars<\/a> of the <a title=\"National Football League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Football_League\">National Football League<\/a> (NFL) for five games in 2011. He has worked as the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Defensive backs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Defensive_backs\">defensive backs<\/a> coach at the <a title=\"Ohio State Buckeyes football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio_State_Buckeyes_football\">Ohio State University<\/a> and the <a title=\"University of Alabama\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Alabama\">University of Alabama<\/a> and as the defensive coordinator for both the <a title=\"Chicago Bears\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chicago_Bears\">Chicago Bears<\/a> of the NFL as well as the <a title=\"University of Georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Georgia\">University of Georgia<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-22586\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/mel-tucker.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1dbjc4n r-18u37iz r-1wbh5a2\">\n<div class=\"css-901oao css-bfa6kz r-14j79pv r-18u37iz r-37j5jr r-a023e6 r-16dba41 r-rjixqe r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">@Coach_mtucker<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p id=\"PXAIOUYSRZH4PFY7VKEC3OR7SM\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>They started at 6 a.m., these grueling summer workouts in the Cleveland Heights summer of 1995 that helped shape Mel Tucker II\u2019s discipline and drive.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"C3MB4I3RCJAVTALJOPWDEDPXY4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>On those sweat-stung days, a former Michigan football player helped a future Ohio State assistant coach become the man who would one day lift Michigan State back to national prominence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"J3QHE3VH7RHIVBEP2NYCNMLNVQ\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/gobluefootballhistory.com\/november-9-2018-happy-birthday-harry-and-larry-banks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Harry Banks played in the 1974 Rose Bowl<\/a> with the Wolverines and was a seventh-round draft pick of the Buffalo Bills. He also grew up in a Toledo apartment building in the 1960s with Mel Tucker. Later in life, both men settled in the Cleveland area to raise their families \u2014 including the firstborn son Mel named after himself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"FCB6BTOOG5GPTNXFL7Z23JDNNU\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Banks took an interest in this impressive young athlete and volunteered to train him. In his first summer after finishing his playing career at Wisconsin, Tucker came home to pull tires and submit to whatever else Banks\u2019 uniquely old-school methodology called for.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"NU6KIHMBSFAILEEKQDOHP37LZQ\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cWhen we saw his van pulling around the corner, we called it the \u2018Painmobile,\u2019\u201d Tucker said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"NGI24PKCFRANRL5PSAD5YQA6V4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Banks used the surveyor\u2019s wheel from his job at the gas company to mark off distances. Tucker\u2019s brother, Rhys, remembers 3,000 yards of bear crawls a day \u2014 1,000 each in the morning, after lunch and after dinner.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"TE54Q7HCD5C5PO6YX3N6PHI2CE\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cIf you puked when you were bear crawling, you would just step over it and keep going,\u201d Rhys Tucker said. \u201cThat\u2019s the mindset we grew up with.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"FZ7N3M4EVVDRTEVFHFOR45YK5E\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>A group of 10 at the beginning of the summer dwindled to Banks; his son, Jon; and the Tucker brothers by the end. That was a gritty, strenuous lesson in perseverance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ITKZLX4GPVBKHLUEDQ5QFTEFNI\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>More than a quarter-century later, that same mindset has inspired the Spartans to defy expectations.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"OMFHKTGWTFAQZLCGP6ZDLST5QQ\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Every Michigan State coach and player was given the same T-shirt prior to the season. The front says \u201cdestination,\u201d and the back contains the GPS coordinates for Lucas Oil Stadium. That venue hosts the Big Ten Championship game and \u2014 coincidentally, or perhaps not, this season \u2014 the national championship game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"X6W6C73CMFGZPMR33LMVAAIAQ4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>When Tucker handed those out, few outside the Spartans\u2019 program considered them a serious challenger to Ohio State\u2019s five-year conference championship streak. After an offseason of transfer turnover, Tucker\u2019s rebuild project still seemed to be at the foundational stage.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"XJV7PXXVFNAMJGYZP7ZTIFGYEU\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Instead, Michigan State comes to Ohio Stadium with a chance to rip that division title out of the Buckeyes\u2019 hands. As the Spartans sit No. 7 in the playoff rankings, the school is reportedly prepared to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/spartans\/2021\/11\/report-michigan-state-preparing-10-year-95-million-contract-extension-for-mel-tucker.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">lock Tucker up with a 10-year, $95 million extension.<\/a> It would make the 49-year-old one of the nation\u2019s highest-paid college coaches, as well as the highest-paid African American coach in any sport.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"PLV6WJG7X5GNVGGM52ILQ67ECA\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>From Family members to Hall of Fame coaches, the people who watched Tucker\u2019s rise say the formula has never changed.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"NMHQVCBNENDD3DHV5P4TS2KQU4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cHis energy and enthusiasm is uplifting to everybody,\u201d said Alabama coach Nick Saban, who hired Tucker to his staffs at LSU and Alabama. \u201cSometimes it gets overlooked because of the technical aspects of the game. But one of the most important things you can have is if players want to play for you.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-heading\"><strong>Something special<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"CEDKLGQ3ZZFWVBFLUI54XKESHI\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Mel and Brenda Tucker noticed their oldest son\u2019s gifts at a young age. Neighbors in their building came by the family\u2019s apartment not to talk to them, but to play backgammon with Mel II when he was barely old enough to start school. The elder Tucker taught his son to play chess, but thinks he gave it up when Mel II beat him in their second game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"EOURG5BX3BBANEWN4XHNJBOUFY\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>The athletic gifts were apparent, too. They made him a star first at University School, then at Cleveland Heights. Soon after reporting to training camp he fell ill, unable to complete workouts. He mentioned to team doctors that he had spent about a week back home in Cleveland with his family, and his brother, Jordan, had come down with chicken pox.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"FFF2O567IVECVIBUDGWNPR4LGQ\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>So, too, had Tucker, and the Tiger-Cats sent him home. He dropped from 205 pounds to about 170.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"YD6XCZ2XXBGMDOFATZZ3TWYIQU\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cIt was touch-and-go for me for a minute,\u201d Tucker said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"CMC4FXQQCNBA7CXANMNHE2C2BQ\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Tucker\u2019s playing career ended, and the coaching climb began.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"NBRNRI4RYFH7TBLFJDRNVQXPUA\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Rhys Tucker, nine years younger, modeled himself after his older brother. Mel II motivated him \u2014 set tough goals and held him accountable. Rhys said he still applies those lessons as the chief probation officer in Bedford Municipal Court.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"WO4DGK65ZBH4HF3U7LHQXSOMDQ\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Yet his eyes were truly opened to his brother\u2019s leadership potential shortly after Tucker became a volunteer football assistant at Cleveland Heights.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"FDTYARI47JC4RHLASJORDP6R5A\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>One day after the older brother returned home from practice, the doorbell rang. Rhys answered and found two friends of his from the football team, who he assumed were there to see him. Within a half hour they had been joined by a couple dozen others who wanted to learn from Tucker how to grow, improve, and fulfill their own college dreams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"N43GCMV62FEC3H46TDUJLJXOSU\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cMy mind was blown,\u201d Rhys Tucker said. \u201cFor first time in their life they were taking it serious.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"L4SIALFUPFGB3LDML6F3K6AKHA\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cI knew he had something special. It was the same things he\u2019s saying now and doing now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"7JIJ2CVVOJE2NKXK5ZHSA44U2Q\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Tucker felt the coaching connection, too. So he wrote to then-Michigan State coach Nick Saban to ask about getting a foot in the door as a graduate assistant. Saban responded to say he had an opening \u2014 if Tucker showed up immediately.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"FP7JRTRL75DGHAFAYDZTE2RDZE\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>So Mel Tucker I drove his son to East Lansing in a near-snowstorm. When he arrived, all of the coaches with NFL connections who followed Saban from the Browns asked why this young man wanted to get into the profession.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"RO42YKSICVB5XJSCD32UVGYL2Y\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cHe said, \u2018When we pulled up to the building and I heard the whistle blowing, I knew,\u2019\u201d Tucker I said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-heading\"><strong>The real deal<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"IFA6EE6DJZD5JFJ4AX66YPWV6E\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Jim Tressel had something to prove, and needed a particular type of person to help him do it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"E4QY6LNC6FDRBCIAIJGGM3LLVM\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Tressel arrived at Ohio State in 2001 with four Division I-AA (now FCS) national championships in hand and a championship-hungry fan base in wait. He built his first staff primarily out of coaches he already knew.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"6CM4VGBET5A3JJCPHSGSUXWGBU\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>However, he also wanted coaches who understood the tradition of Ohio State and the challenge of meeting those expectations. He wanted a recruiter who could go into Cleveland and lock the region\u2019s talent away from Michigan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"MWPANBOWNBABBBSOMPYEBOKN5I\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Which is why he hired Tucker away from LSU to become his first defensive backs coach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"Y6SP342U2BDXPAFCGUGTPHOBU4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cHe was a young coach when we first got him, but he was like a sponge,\u201d Tressel said. \u201cHe constantly wanted to learn, wanted to grow, wanted to study. He wanted to get to know everybody. He wanted to know the staff well, wanted to know the players well. He was always listening and finding out what\u2019s important to people.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ZOYJD4T2HJGEZKRVW33TGM6FL4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Tucker knew about culture change. As a member of Alvarez\u2019s first recruiting class, he helped Wisconsin improve from 1-10 to 10-1-1 and a Rose Bowl victory in four years. As a member of Saban\u2019s first LSU staff, he helped orchestrate a turnaround from 3-8 to 8-4 in the first season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"OIDTSXSZPNASZM2GOIDEMYAV3A\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Tucker said he may have worked harder in those first two years at Ohio State than any other time in his career. As the Buckeyes went from 7-5 in 2001 to undefeated national champions in 2002, Tucker picked up a blueprint on how to turn around a program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"DS3AYI2VP5CQBDM4IZ625QZLU4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cEverything you\u2019re going to do, you\u2019re going to do to a high, high standard,\u201d Tucker said of Tressel\u2019s philosophy. \u201cIt\u2019s really not just being the most talented team, but the most prepared team and the hungriest team and the most hard-working team. The culture he brought there, it was a winning culture.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"V5UNBQDOEVBZDLLW2YADS6TY3E\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Tucker left Ohio State after four years to jump to the NFL. He was a part of Romeo Crennel\u2019s first staff with the Browns. He bridged the gap between the Jack Del Rio and Mike Mularkey tenures in Jacksonville, serving as the interim head coach. When Mark Trestman was hired by the Chicago Bears, he brought Tucker on as defensive coordinator.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"CCXARKW5AVCQDBNZ5STE6ZNRKE\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>The young coach who had once impressed Tressel with stories of selling meat out of his trunk as a first job out of college grew into a respected veteran voice throughout the sport.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"KQUEEXFWRJDOJBZ6665ZXCVGE4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Kirby Smart hired Tucker to be his defensive coordinator as Georgia\u2019s first-time head coach in 2016. He saw the impact he had on players like Eric Stokes, who rose from three-star high school prospect to first-round NFL Draft pick under Tucker\u2019s influence.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"MXPC62LADRA5XFI4T7ZYLWRLYY\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cMel was tremendous for our program, tremendous for me,\u201d Smart said. \u201cHe was probably a bigger asset for me personally as a young first-time head coach than he maybe even was as a great asset to the players.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"A3QZDWHSSBHADFOMN3HXGIKU4M\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cHe was a really good teacher. Probably not as emotional as I was early on. He helped keep things at a level head.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"O2AG7XSXAZGZ3PCRP3MBIBW3D4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Tressel, now president at Youngstown State, reconnected with Tucker on the field before the Penguins played at Michigan State on Sept. 11. There are parallels between the challenge Tressel took on at OSU and the one Tucker accepted at Michigan State. Mark Dantonio built the Spartans to national relevance \u2014 and a consistent presence as a nemesis of the Buckeyes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"YZGFMZXMEFD6TE2UPWRECPAHWE\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>To speed up that process, Tucker turned to the transfer portal, bringing in 20 new players from outside the program between his first and second seasons. That required an immediate buy-in, from both newcomers and holdovers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"DI37RRH52FHS7HPP22FYLSVEAE\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s not an in-progress plan, it\u2019s the now plan,\u201d MSU receiver Jalen Nailor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/spartans\/2021\/11\/michigan-states-rapid-rebuild-leads-to-improbable-opportunity-at-ohio-state.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said in July<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlive.com\/spartans\/2021\/11\/michigan-states-rapid-rebuild-leads-to-improbable-opportunity-at-ohio-state.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">.<\/a> \u201cIt\u2019s the year that he really sees us doing these big things that he has in mind, and we have the guys that can do that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"5SCJZMUAMFD45JZEAH53YKI47I\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>All of those experiences helped make Tucker the coach he is today.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"CGGD5KLTJFHPTK23GRJSBTCOJ4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Yet Tressel believes Tucker has succeeded so quickly with Michigan State because he remains true to himself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"3PXL2FKQIJBEBHJEGSFIVZCES4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cHuman beings can sense genuineness in people.\u201d Tressel said. \u201dIf you\u2019re being who you are, it\u2019s a lot easier to convince people what you\u2019re trying to accomplish is genuine.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"AV2JFKFFAZCJ5E4T4X2DO5J6HA\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>\u201cMel always had the ability to connect with players on a lot of fronts. He was very demanding and when it was time to work it was time to work. But he made playing the game a lot of fun and I\u2019m sure he\u2019s doing the same as a head coach. All the while, he doesn\u2019t back down at all.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"SHF77MTLJRDFFETBYIK7VAJVMU\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>Standing in front of his team after its first preseason scrimmage, Tucker asked his Michigan State players which they wanted first: The good news or the bad news.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"OOGMDOAACBFB3B3AG2L6TPJTY4\" class=\"article__paragraph article__paragraph--left\"><strong>His players asked for the bad news.
