team announced. The one-year deal is worth up to $10 million with $4.5 million guaranteed and a $1.5 million roster bonus, according to multiple reports.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.charlotteobserver.com\/sports\/nfl\/carolina-panthers\/article255722441.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The Charlotte Observer<\/a> first reported that Newton, 32, was meeting with team officials. Newton spent the first nine years of his career with the franchise.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Newton, whom the Panthers selected No. 1 overall in the 2011 NFL Draft, has been unsigned this year since the Patriots <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/08\/31\/patriots-shockingly-release-cam-newton-make-mac-jones-starter\/\">cut him in training camp<\/a>. He didn\u2019t do much last year with the Patriots, throwing for 2,657 yards and rushing for 592 as the team struggled to adjust to life without Tom Brady.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Panthers, though, have struggled to adjust to life without Newton.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Through nine games, they\u2019re sitting at 4-5 and it seems that Sam Darnold <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2021\/11\/10\/sam-darnold-injury-whats-next-for-his-panthers-nfl-future\/\">isn\u2019t the answer at quarterback<\/a>. The former Jet, for whom the Panthers dealt a second-round pick and is expected to miss four-to-six weeks with a shoulder injury, has thrown 11 interceptions to seven touchdowns. He\u2019s averaging just 6.5 yards per attempt. class=\"nfl-c-body-part nfl-c-body-part--text\">\n<p><strong>The 32-year-old Newton adds experience to the position, and offers possibilities on offense which can only help.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"nfl-c-body-part nfl-c-body-part--text\">\n<p><strong>With starter <a title=\"Sam Darnold\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panthers.com\/team\/players-roster\/sam-darnold\/\">Sam Darnold<\/a> out four to six weeks with a shoulder injury, the Panthers&#8217; only other quarterbacks on the active roster were <a title=\"P.J. Walker\" href=\"https:\/\/www.panthers.com\/team\/players-roster\/p-j-walker\/\">P.J. Neither side has hard feelings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>That much became obvious when Newton agreed to terms with the Panthers on Thursday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Newton, the 2015 NFL MVP, gets a second chance in Carolina.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI know that <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Panthers\/status\/1458884284614426633\">he\u2019s a competitor<\/a>, besides his talent,\u201d Rhule said Thursday. \u201cI know he\u2019s a competitor. I know that he\u2019s tough. He\u2019s everything I believe in and talk about. But at the time (of Newton\u2019s release last March), we weren\u2019t sure if he was healthy. Well, he\u2019s healthy now, and you see that he\u2019s healthy now. As he said to me, probably just not playing this season, that he\u2019s as healthy as he possibly could be.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c(The phone conversation) was good. At the end of the day, I think anytime you look back on things, you always say, \u2018I wish I had done this differently,\u2019 but everyone has that. There was nothing but good feelings in that conversation. Obviously, he loves Charlotte. He loves the Carolina Panthers. He made that very clear to me. So this is a fitting story.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><a class=\"nameLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsedge.com\/football\/nfl\/player\/10704\/sam-darnold\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sam Darnold<\/a> will miss several weeks with a shoulder injury, prompting Rhule to reach out to Newton, who has remained a free agent since the Patriots cut him before the season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rhule expects <a class=\"nameLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsedge.com\/football\/nfl\/player\/8260\/pj-walker\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">P.J. Walker<\/a> to start for the team this week against the Cardinals. Matt Barkley, whom the Panthers signed to their active roster off the Titans\u2019 practice squad, will back up Walker.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But Rhule didn\u2019t completely rule out Newton dressing this weekend.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI don\u2019t ever rule anything out, but we just had our Thursday practice (without Newton participating),\u201d Rhule said. \u201cWith any veteran player, they can learn things quickly, so we\u2019re not ruling anything out, but that\u2019s really kind of not where we\u2019re looking right now.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Panthers will determine where Newton is physically and see how quickly he can learn the offense before figuring out how quickly he can play in a game. But it\u2019s not likely to be long before Newton takes over the starting job.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rhule said \u201cthis is about his future, and Cam has a lot of good football left.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If Newton is ready to play in Week 11, Carolina plays the Washington Football Team. Former Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, of course, now is Washington\u2019s head coach and did not try to sign Newton when <a class=\"nameLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcsportsedge.com\/football\/nfl\/player\/12157\/ryan-fitzpatrick\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ryan Fitzpatrick<\/a> was injured early this season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cObviously, we brought Cam back because of who he is at quarterback, and we brought him here to play,\u201d Rhule said. \u201cBut we\u2019re not looking into the future. We\u2019ve just got to get him here and start teaching him what we do. At the end of day, I talked to Cam. He told me he\u2019s healthy and feels great. This is as healthy as he\u2019s been. A healthy Cam Newton is a special player.
