Hassan tried and failed to jump over a fallen runner and then <a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/sections\/tokyo-olympics-live-updates\/2021\/08\/01\/1023580196\/track-1500-sifan-hassan-tokyo-olympic-games-netherlands-fall\">fell down<\/a> herself. She was undeterred; she got back up and, now suddenly in last place, went on to pass 11 runners to finish first.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I can&#8217;t believe it,&#8221; she said after her win, according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/lifestyle\/sports\/athletics-one-down-two-go-hassan-kicks-off-treble-bid-with-5000m-gold-2021-08-02\/\">Reuters<\/a>. &#8220;I used all my energy this morning and I was kind of tired. I couldn&#8217;t believe what happened. Her plan is to leave the Games having won gold in the 1,500-meter, 5,000-meter and 10,000-meter races, something that has never been done before.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>She has come close once before. During the 2019 IAAF World Athletics Championships, Hassan won gold in both the 1,500-meter and the 10,000-meter races.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"edTag\"><strong>Hassan says it&#8217;s all about following her heart<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>When <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/nzaccardi\/status\/1421644758330527747\/photo\/1\">announcing<\/a> her decision to go for triple gold, Hassan, 28, explained her motivation.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;For me, it is crucial to follow my heart,&#8221; she said in a statement. &#8220;Doing that is far more important than gold medals. That keeps me motivated and it keeps me enjoying this beautiful sport.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>One down, two to go. In 2021, Hassan won the gold medal in the <a title=\"Athletics at the 2020 Summer Olympics \u2013 Women's 5000 metres\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Athletics_at_the_2020_Summer_Olympics_%E2%80%93_Women%27s_5000_metres\">5000 metres<\/a> event at the <a title=\"2020 Summer Olympics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2020_Summer_Olympics\">Tokyo Olympics<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><span id=\"Mile_world_record\" class=\"mw-headline\">Mile world record<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><strong>On 12 July 2019, Hassan entered the <a title=\"Mile run\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mile_run\">mile run<\/a> at the <a title=\"Herculis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Herculis\">Herculis<\/a> meet in <a title=\"Fontvieille, Monaco\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fontvieille,_Monaco\">Fontvieille, Monaco<\/a>. <a title=\"Olha Lyakhova\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olha_Lyakhova\">Olha Lyakhova<\/a> was the pace setter, taking the field through the first two laps (measured at the start line, not the quarter-mile splits) in 64.26 and 63.94 (2:08.20). As is typical for Hassan, she was last off the start line, but over the next 150 metres, slowly eased herself around the field on the outside into the marking position behind Lyakhova. <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Gabriela Stafford\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gabriela_Stafford\">Gabriela DeBues-Stafford<\/a> soon moved through the field in between Hassan and Lyakhova for the next lap before Hassan and <a title=\"Gudaf Tsegay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gudaf_Tsegay\">Gudaf Tsegay<\/a> separated from the field as the only chasers. At 1200m, Hassan was looking back at her close chaser Tsegay in 3:10.13 (a 61.93 lap). Hassan accelerated, opening a 5-metre gap over the next 100 metres. Continuing at this pace, she passed 1500 metres in about 3:55. Her first race at the 10,000-metre distance was in Stanford in a time of 31:18.12, doing just enough to achieve the qualifying standard for the 2019 World Championships. The winning time of 30:17.62 was the best time of the year on the track. Alina Reh (Germany) led the field after 3000 metres in 9:29.69. The front runner reached the halfway point in 15:32.70. Letensebet Gidey (Ethiopia) finished in 30:21.23, with Agnes Tirop (Kenya) coming in third place in 30:25.50. The second half of the run was covered in 14:45.<sup id=\"cite_ref-29\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>She also won the 1500 metres race with a time of 3:51.95 (sixth place on the <a title=\"1500 metres\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1500_metres#Women\">1500 m all-time-list<\/a>), setting a new <a title=\"List of World Athletics Championships records\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_World_Athletics_Championships_records\">Championships<\/a> and <a title=\"List of European records in athletics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_European_records_in_athletics\">European<\/a> record.
