From Kim Bhasin at Bloomberg:<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Buzzer, a live-sports streaming service, has raised $20 million in funding from venture capital firms and a group of current and former franchise owners and athletes, including Michael Jordan and Wayne Gretzky.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Sapphire Sport\u00a0and\u00a0Canaan Partners led the round, which is set to be announced Wednesday. More than 20 athletes from across sports were also involved, including tennis phenom Naomi Osaka, football\u2019s Patrick Mahomes and DeAndre Hopkins, and basketball stars Devin Booker, LaMelo Ball and Sabrina Ionescu.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>They were joined by several team owners, such as Joe Lacob from the Golden State Warriors, the Tampa Bay Lightning\u2019s Jeffrey Vinik, and\u00a0Lerner Enterprises, the family firm behind the Washington Nationals.<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Bringing on big-name athletes is a pretty standard way for a service like this to try and add some clout (even, daresay, some buzz) and you\u2019ll likely see some of these names push out a few social media promotions for it as well. Buzzer is certainly an interesting concept, sort of offering the option to tune in to a game late if it\u2019s good and, say, everyone on Twitter is talking about it, in the form of a microtransaction.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The on-the-go entertainment model was famously\/infamously pushed by Quibi, too, which flamed out in spectacular fashion. But that was attempting to push an entirely new form of narrative content. For decades, though, people have flipped a channel after seeing a game was close and getting to the end. The NFL\u2019s Red Zone channels have proven there\u2019s a market for that as well.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzzer\u2019s leadership has clearly found belief enough to raise capital, and getting more distribution rights in place is the obvious next step (hence the capital) along with raising awareness (hence the athletes.) It could work! It could also not work. The company said \u201csubstantial new investments\u201d came from individuals from across sports, business and entertainment. The laundry list of backers includes: LaMelo Ball, Devin Booker, J. Cole, Wayne Gretzky, DeAndre Hopkins, Sabrina Ionescu, Michael Jordan, Patrick Mahomes, Auston Matthews, Connor McDavid, Renee Montgomery, Naomi Osaka and Bobby Wagner. Also participating in the round were early investors including VC firm Lerer Hippeau and SoFi CEO Anthony Noto (former Twitter CFO).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The New York-based company was founded last year by Bo Han, who previously worked at Twitter for seven years, most recently heading up live sports rights acquisitions. Worth noting: Twitter\u2019s app has the ability to alert users of live events they\u2019ve chosen to follow.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<article class=\"lrv-u-width-100p u-max-width-830 u-border-r-1@tablet u-border-color-brand-secondary-40 u-padding-r-125@tablet u-margin-r-125@tablet\">\n<div class=\"a-content a-content--logo-end u-font-family-body lrv-u-line-height-normal lrv-u-font-size-18 u-max-width-600@tablet u-max-width-640@desktop-xl lrv-u-margin-l-auto lrv-u-margin-b-1\">\n<div class=\"vy-cx-page-content \">\n<p><strong>According to Buzzer, its app provides \u201ca seamless user and viewing experience\u201d by aggregating live sports streaming rights and letting users to set up customized alerts based on their preferences. Buzzer\u2019s current league partners include NBA League Pass, PGA Tour and NHL, and the company says it has more deals in the works.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThere\u2019s nothing more exciting than a close game or buzzer beater \u2014 those are the moments we live for as players,\u201d Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and Super Bowl LIV champion, said in a statement provided by the company. \u201cBuzzer ensures fans never miss these moments in real-time and helps us make our connections with them stronger, especially with younger, mobile-first sports fans. I believe Buzzer represents the future of live sports and I\u2019m thrilled to join them on their journey.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Buzzer is currently in an \u201cearly access\u201d release phase, available for download on iOS in Apple\u2019s App Store and on Android in the Google Play store. For now, users who download can build profiles by selecting preferences for their favorite players, teams and leagues; they\u2019re then added to a waitlist before they get full access to the app, at which point they are able to consume live content. The platform will officially launch later this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe envision Buzzer becoming the discovery and curation tool that brings Gen Z fans back to live sports with simple access to ephemeral moments,\u201d Han, founder and CEO of Buzzer, said in a statement. He touted his company\u2019s \u201cpartner-first approach,\u201d which he said will give leagues and other sports-rights holders new opportunities to reach new fans and generate new revenue streams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Other investors in Buzzer include athletes Pat Connaughton, Madison Hammond, Scotty James, Christian McCaffrey and Apolo Ohno; team owners David Blitzer (New Jersey Devils, Philadelphia 76ers), GSW Sports Ventures (an affiliate of the Golden State Warriors), Steve Kaplan (D.C. Front Row Motorsports rookie Anthony Alfredo, StarCom Racing\u2019s Quin Houff, and Rick Ware Racing\u2019s Josh Bilicki, three drivers with whom Wallace should probably not be keeping company in any statistical category.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wallace drives the #23 Toyota for the Joe Gibbs Racing-affiliated 23XI Racing in their first season as a Cup Series team, and as expected, there have been growing pains. His previous best finish for the team had been an 11th place effort at Dover International Speedway in mid-May.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>NBA legend Michael Jordan, who co-owns the new team along with Joe Gibbs Racing driver Denny Hamlin, took notice. Through 12 races, Wallace had finished no higher than 16th place. But in the last seven races, he has recorded five top 14 finishes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So running in the top 10 consistently is a reasonable goal at this point, especially since Wallace had been performing well enough to consistently finish inside the top 15 ahead of his first top five finish of the year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hamlin had also said that his goal for the team was to be running better in the summer than in the spring and running better in the fall than in the summer. Jordan\u2019s goal for Wallace perfectly aligns with that goal and is effectively a continuation of what the driver of the #23 Toyota has done over the last few weeks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do bear in mind the fact that Jordan said at the beginning of the year that <a href=\"https:\/\/beyondtheflag.com\/2021\/03\/05\/nascar-michael-jordan-doesnt-sign-checks-losers\/\">he doesn\u2019t sign checks for losers<\/a> and he expected Wallace to win. Can he climb the next step and finish in the top 10 consistently?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wallace will go for his second consecutive and overall top 10 and top five finish of the 2021 season in this Sunday afternoon\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nascar.com\/weekend-schedule\/weekend-schedule-road-america\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Jockey Made in America 250 Presented by Kwik Trip<\/a> at Road America.
