He even hosted a TV variety show in Minneapolis.<\/strong><strong>Grant pitched 14 seasons with seven different teams in MLB from 1958-1971. He spent his first seven with the <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mlb\/teams\/cleveland\/\" data-ylk=\"slk:Cleveland Indians\" data-rapid_p=\"22\" data-v9y=\"1\">Cleveland Indians<\/a> before joining the Twins in 1964, where he made his greatest impact on the game. He earned his second All-Star bid in 1965 while leading the league with 21 wins en route to the Twins&#8217; first AL pennant.<\/strong><strong>Grant pitched three games in the World Series that year against the Los Angeles Dodgers. He won two, including <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-almanac.com\/box-scores\/boxscore.php?boxid=196510130MIN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" data-ylk=\"slk:a complete-game 5-1 win\" data-rapid_p=\"23\" data-v9y=\"1\">a complete-game 5-1 win<\/a> in Game 6. He also led the Twins&#8217; offense that game with a three-run home run. The Dodgers won the series with Sandy Koufax on the mound in Game 7.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grant posted a 145-119 career record with a 3.63 ERA. He tallied 1,267 career strikeouts and 849 career walks in 2,442 innings over 571 appearances. After retirement, he worked as a broadcaster for the Indians and <a class=\"link rapid-noclick-resp yahoo-link\" href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/mudcat-grant-1st-black-20-214347996.html\" data-ylk=\"slk:was a vocal advocate for Black participation in sports;outcm:mb_qualified_link;_E:mb_qualified_link;ct:story;\" data-rapid_p=\"25\" data-v9y=\"1\">was a vocal advocate for Black participation in sports<\/a>.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond that, Grant shaped efforts to recognize Black pitchers with his 2007 \u201cBlack Aces\u201d <a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Black-Aces-Baseballs-African-American-Twenty-Game\/dp\/1593304870\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-id=\"93\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:93,&quot;p&quot;:60,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:12}\">book<\/a> (written with Tom Sabellico and Pat O\u2019Brien) and campaign to recognize Black pitchers who had won 20 games in a single MLB season. That became a major cause for him, and it had a significant impact. As the season progressed, I started getting all kinds of mail, and even Howard Cosell called me a couple times when I got to 18 wins. So, it was really special.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>As Grant got older, he understood the significance of the milestone, and it became his mission to celebrate the accomplishments of the Black Aces (<a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"http:\/\/www.theblackaces.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-id=\"95\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:95,&quot;p&quot;:60,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:14}\">http:\/\/www.theblackaces.com\/<\/a>), African-American pitchers who won at least 20 games. Grant\u2019s book, \u201cThe Black Aces: Baseball\u2019s Only African-American Twenty-Game Winners\u201d, came out in 2007, and since then\u00a0<a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/player\/282332\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener tag\" data-id=\"96\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:96,&quot;p&quot;:60,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:15}\">Carsten Sabathia<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0<a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/player\/456034\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener tag\" data-id=\"97\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:97,&quot;p&quot;:60,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:16}\">David Price<\/a>\u00a0have joined the exclusive club.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>The members are Vida Blue (1971, \u201973, \u201975), Al Downing (\u201971), Bob Gibson (\u201965, \u201966, \u201968-70), Dwight Gooden (\u201985), Grant (\u201965), Ferguson Jenkins (\u201967-72, \u201974), Sam Jones (\u201959), Don Newcombe (\u201951, \u201955, \u201956), Mike Norris (\u201980), J.R. Richard (\u201976), Dave Stewart (\u201987-90), Earl Wilson (\u201967), Dontrelle Willis (2005), Sabathia (\u201910) and Price (\u201912).<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cIt was a lot of fun doing that book and doing all that research,\u201d Grant said. \u201cI found out so many things that happened and how African-Americans contributed to Major League Baseball. I think it\u2019s just a wonderful thing.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Beyond that, Grant was a regular figure advocating for Black history in baseball and working to improve Black participation in the game. As Bill Lubinger of\u00a0<em>The Cleveland Plain Dealer<\/em> <a tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cleveland.com\/tribe\/2010\/01\/when_they_played_the_game_long.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-id=\"98\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:98,&quot;p&quot;:60,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;partnerLink&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:24,&quot;o&quot;:17}\">wrote<\/a> around a January 2019 Cleveland Cavaliers game where Grant, Jimmy Jackson, Cris Carter and Jim Brown were honored in a \u201cBlack Heritage Celebration\u201d of local athletes, Grant experienced plenty of adversity due to his skin color in both the minors and majors, but also got support from a wide range of teammates. And he spent a large amount of his later years trying to boost Black participation in baseball, including organizing tournaments.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><em>As the number of black players in the majors has shrunk from more than one in four by the mid-70\u2019s to about one in 10 last season, Grant has been out front of an effort to counter the trend.<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>\u201cDo we just sit here and say, \u2018Well, that\u2019s too bad?\u2019 No, you get out and you do something about it,\u201d he said. \u201cYou provide a place of opportunity where kids can show some skills at an early age and maybe this will get bigger and bigger and we can motivate them to play this game.\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Grant was also a frequent figure at Negro Leagues Baseball Museum events, and president Bob Kendrick delivered a nice tribute to him Saturday:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p><strong>Absolutely heartbroken over the news of the passing of my dear friend &amp; creator of the Black Aces, Jim \u201cMudcat\u201d Grant! League Baseball<\/a> (MLB). He was a two-time <a title=\"Major League Baseball All-Star Game\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_League_Baseball_All-Star_Game\">All-Star<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Reichler_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1965, Grant became the first black pitcher to win 20 games in a season in the American League and the first black pitcher to win a <a title=\"World Series\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Series\">World Series<\/a> game for the American League. He pitched two complete-game World Series victories in 1965, hitting a three-run home run in game 6, and was named <i><a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"The Sporting News\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Sporting_News\">The Sporting News<\/a><\/i> American League Pitcher of the Year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grant was born in <a title=\"Lacoochee, Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lacoochee,_Florida\">Lacoochee, Florida<\/a>, on August 13, 1935. He was one of seven children of James Sr. and Viola Grant. His father died when Grant was two years old. He attended <a class=\"new\" title=\"Moore Academy (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=Moore_Academy&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">Moore Academy<\/a> in nearby <a title=\"Dade City, Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dade_City,_Florida\">Dade City<\/a>, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. Grant was awarded a scholarship to play football and baseball at <a title=\"Florida A&amp;M University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florida_A%26M_University\">Florida A&amp;M University<\/a>. However, he dropped out during his <a title=\"Sophomore\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sophomore\">sophomore<\/a> year in order to support his family through financial difficulty.<sup id=\"cite_ref-SABR_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He was signed as an amateur free agent by the <a title=\"Cleveland Indians\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cleveland_Indians\">Cleveland Indians<\/a> before the 1954 season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span id=\"Professional_career\" class=\"mw-headline\">Professional career<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Grant played four seasons in the minor leagues from 1954 to 1957. <sup id=\"cite_ref-BRm_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He made his MLB debut on April 17, 1958, at the age of 22, winning a <a title=\"Complete game\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Complete_game\">complete game<\/a> against the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Kansas City Athletics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kansas_City_Athletics\">Kansas City Athletics<\/a>.\u00a0 His best season in Cleveland was in 1961 when he had a won-loss record of 15\u20139 and a 3.86 <a title=\"Earned run average\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earned_run_average\">earned run average<\/a>. In June 1964, he was traded to the <a title=\"Minnesota Twins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minnesota_Twins\">Minnesota Twins<\/a> and had a record of 11\u20139 for the remainder of the season. In 1965 Grant had the best year of his career. He was 21\u20137 for the Twins, helping to lead the team to the <a title=\"1965 World Series\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1965_World_Series\">1965 World Series<\/a> against the <a title=\"Los Angeles Dodgers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles_Dodgers\">Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a>.\u00a0 In 1965, Grant hosted a local Minneapolis variety television program, <i>The Jim Grant Show<\/i>, where he sang and danced.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grant finished 6th in voting for the 1965 American League MVP for leading the league in wins, won-loss percentage (.750), and shutouts (6). He also started 39 games and had 14 complete games, <span class=\"frac\" role=\"math\">270<span class=\"sr-only\">+<\/span><span class=\"num\">1<\/span>\u2044<span class=\"den\">3<\/span><\/span> innings pitched, 252 hits allowed, 34 home runs allowed, 107 runs allowed, 99 earned runs allowed, 61 walks, 142 strikeouts, 8 wild pitches, 1,095 batters faced, 2 intentional walks issued, and a 3.30 ERA.<sup id=\"cite_ref-BR_4-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Grant&#8217;s home run in the 6th game of the <a title=\"1965 World Series\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1965_World_Series\">1965 World Series<\/a> was only the second by an <a title=\"American League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_League\">American League<\/a> pitcher during a World Series game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grant&#8217;s last year as a full-time starting pitcher came in 1966. He spent his next five seasons in baseball as a reliever and occasional starter for five different big-league clubs. He and <a title=\"Zoilo Versalles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Zoilo_Versalles\">Zoilo Versalles<\/a> were traded by the Twins to the Dodgers for <a title=\"John Roseboro\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Roseboro\">John Roseboro<\/a>, <a title=\"Ron Perranoski\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ron_Perranoski\">Ron Perranoski<\/a> and <a title=\"Bob Miller (baseball, born 1939)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bob_Miller_(baseball,_born_1939)\">Bob Miller<\/a> on November 28, 1967.<sup id=\"cite_ref-8\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grant was the starting pitcher for the <a title=\"Montreal Expos\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Montreal_Expos\">Montreal Expos<\/a> in their first-ever game on April 8, 1969. He pitched 1.1 innings while allowing six hits and three runs, starting his season off with a 20.25 ERA, although the Expos would later win the game in an 11\u201310 shootout that had nine combined pitchers in the game.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mudcat_Grant#cite_note-9\">[9]<\/a><\/sup> He played his final major league game on September 29, 1971, at the age of 36.<sup id=\"cite_ref-BR_4-4\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mudcat_Grant#cite_note-BR-4\">[4]<\/a><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 14 years, he had a 145\u2013119 record in 571 games, while starting in 293 of them and throwing 89 complete games and finishing 160 of them, 18 shutouts, 53 saves, with 2,442 innings pitched on a 3.63 ERA. Grant&#8217;s home run during Game 6 of the <a title=\"1965 World Series\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1965_World_Series\">1965 World Series<\/a> was the only one he hit that season and one of only seven he hit in his entire career. As a hitter, Grant posted a .178 <a title=\"Batting average (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Batting_average_(baseball)\">batting average<\/a> (135-for-759) with 80 <a title=\"Run (baseball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Run_(baseball)\">runs<\/a>, 6 <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Home runs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Home_runs\">home runs<\/a>, 65 <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"RBI\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/RBI\">RBI<\/a> and 37 <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Bases on balls\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bases_on_balls\">bases on balls<\/a>. Defensively, he recorded a .966 <a title=\"Fielding percentage\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fielding_percentage\">fielding percentage<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-BR_4-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span id=\"Post-playing_career\" class=\"mw-headline\">Post-playing career<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>After retiring as a player, Grant served as the Publicity Director for the North American Softball League (NASL), one of three <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Men's professional softball leagues\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Men%27s_professional_softball_leagues\">men&#8217;s professional softball leagues<\/a> active in the pro softball era. <sup id=\"cite_ref-10\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He later worked as a broadcaster and executive for the Indians, and also as a broadcaster for the Athletics.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In later years, Grant dedicated himself to studying and promoting the history of <a title=\"Black people\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_people\">blacks<\/a> in baseball. In 2007, Grant released <i>The Black Aces, Baseball&#8217;s Only African-American Twenty-Game Winners<\/i>, featuring chapters on each of the black pitchers to have at least one twenty-win season, and also featuring Negro league players that Mudcat felt would have been twenty game winners if they were allowed to play. The book was featured at the <a title=\"National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Baseball_Hall_of_Fame_and_Museum\">Baseball Hall of Fame<\/a> during Induction Weekend 2006. In February 2007 during an event to honor <a title=\"Black History Month\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Black_History_Month\">Black History Month<\/a>, President <a title=\"George W. Bush\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_W._Bush\">George W. Bush<\/a> honored Grant and fellow Aces, Ferguson Jenkins, Dontrelle Willis and Mike Norris, and the publication of the book, at the White House.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Grant threw out the ceremonial first pitch on <a title=\"Opening Day\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Opening_Day\">Opening Day<\/a> at <a title=\"Progressive Field\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Progressive_Field\">Progressive Field<\/a> in Cleveland on April 14, 2008, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of his major league debut; he was also awarded the key to the city to honor the occasion.<sup id=\"cite_ref-lubinger_17-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He was inducted into the <a title=\"Baseball Reliquary\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baseball_Reliquary\">Baseball Reliquary<\/a>&#8216;s <a title=\"Baseball Reliquary\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baseball_Reliquary#Shrine_of_the_Eternals\">Shrine of the Eternals<\/a> in 2012.
