Former NBA Champion and Ozen High School graduate Kendrick Perkins will be the team\u2019s \u201cNew Owner,\u201d citing a desire to bring positive attention back to his hometown.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"paywall\" class=\"content-wrapper\">\n<p><strong>It will be the region\u2019s first professional basketball team since the Southeast Texas Mavericks played in Winnie from 2008-11. That franchise, now known as the Shreveport Mavericks, is also a member of The Basketball League.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThis is giving my hometown something to be proud of,\u201d Perkins said of the Panthers. \u201cA chance to give those that didn\u2019t have the opportunities we had a chance to be seen. An outlet. Something that kids can see and say \u2018I can do that.\u2019\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Planing to start play in the 2022 season, the Panthers will be the 30th team in The Basketball League. The 2021 season is currently coming to a head, with playoffs scheduled for early July.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Those 29 other teams are scattered across the country, including three other Texas-based squads \u2014 the Dallas Skyline, the Waco Royals and the Houston Push.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Basketball League CEO Evelyn Magley said Beaumont\u2019s location between Houston and Louisiana made it a prime target for an expansion team.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe are thrilled to have Beaumont be a big piece of our expansion plans and believe that having one of their native sons (Kendrick Perkins) help guide the program will be a nice jump start for exposure and allow for credibility with the team\u2019s community engagement.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Perkins formed the team with the help of his cousin Jay McDonald and Beaumont city councilman AJ Turner, who jumped at the chance to help invest in Beaumont\u2019s community when the idea was brought to him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As for the Panthers, the team will hold open tryouts in various cities across the nation, including dates in Beaumont from July 30th-31st and November 20-21. Ozen High School<\/a> in <a title=\"Beaumont, Texas\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Beaumont,_Texas\">Beaumont, Texas<\/a>, in 2003. He led Ozen High to four consecutive district championships and one state championship during his high school career. Averaging 27.5 points, 16.4 rebounds and 7.8 blocked shots a game as a senior, he led Ozen to a 33\u20131 record, with the only loss being a 66\u201354 setback to Fort Worth Dunbar in the state 4A championship game. After his senior season in 2003, Perkins was selected to the <a title=\"McDonald's All-American Game\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/McDonald%27s_All-American_Game\">McDonald&#8217;s All-American Game<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Considered a five-star recruit by <a title=\"Rivals.com\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rivals.com\">Rivals.com<\/a>, Perkins was listed as the No. 3 center and the No. 6 player in the nation in 2003.<sup id=\"cite_ref-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He had originally committed to <a title=\"Memphis Tigers men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memphis_Tigers_men%27s_basketball\">Memphis<\/a>, but opted instead to make the jump to the <a title=\"National Basketball Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Basketball_Association\">NBA<\/a> straight out of high school.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The 6\u00a0ft 10\u00a0in (2.08\u00a0m) <a title=\"Center (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Center_(basketball)\">center<\/a> was drafted in the first round with the 27th pick of the <a title=\"Memphis Grizzlies\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2003_NBA_draft\">2003 NBA draft<\/a> by the <a title=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Memphis_Grizzlies\">Memphis Grizzlies<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kendrick_Perkins#cite_note-5\">[5]<\/a><\/sup> but then, he was immediately traded along with <a title=\"Marcus Banks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marcus_Banks\">Marcus Banks<\/a> to the Boston Celtics in exchange for <a title=\"Troy Bell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Troy_Bell\">Troy Bell<\/a> and <a title=\"Dahntay Jones\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dahntay_Jones\">Dahntay Jones<\/a>, who had been selected by the Celtics in the same draft.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kendrick_Perkins#cite_note-6\">[6]<\/a><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>During the <a title=\"2004\u201305 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2004%E2%80%9305_NBA_season\">2004\u201305 season<\/a>, Perkins received more playing time than he did his rookie season, and became known as one of the tougher players on the Celtics. He had a limited role during the regular season and <a title=\"NBA playoffs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_playoffs\">playoffs<\/a> as the team&#8217;s &#8220;enforcer&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After marked improvements during summer training and practice, Perkins earned more playing time from coach <a title=\"Doc Rivers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Doc_Rivers\">Doc Rivers<\/a> during the 2005\u201306 season. He played some of the best games of his career in 2006, repeatedly reaching double figures in points and rebounds. After the trade of <a title=\"Mark Blount\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mark_Blount\">Mark Blount<\/a> to the <a title=\"Minnesota Timberwolves\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Minnesota_Timberwolves\">Minnesota Timberwolves<\/a>, Perkins became the undisputed starting <a title=\"Center (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Center_(basketball)\">center<\/a> for the Celtics, although he was already sharing starting time before Blount&#8217;s departure. the Brampton A\u2019s of the National Basketball League (NBL) of Canada. As a liaison she scaled the forward facing programming of the NBL, professional basketball teams, and nonprofit organizations within the community at large.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A Music Educator and Music Therapist, Magley has a passion for positively impacting the lives of young people.
