It was the 10th\u00a0anniversary of Derrick Rose becoming the youngest MVP in league history. And he celebrated Monday by going vintage.<\/p>\n

The 32-year-old dropped a season-high 25 points, including three clutch buckets in the final three-plus minutes of a 118-104 victory over the Grizzlies.\u00a0 He wrapped up his night with an understatement in the press conference.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI\u2019m just happy to still be here and playing decent basketball,\u201d the point guard said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Knicks (37-28), winners of 12 of their last 13, clinched their first winning season since 2013. They led throughout the night but reached a critical moment after the Grizzlies cut the deficit to 5 with about six minutes left. Julius Randle (28 points) responded with a 3-pointer, and Rose took New York home.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Rose has now scored at least 19 points in five of the last seven games.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s the great value in him, whether he was the MVP of the league at 22 or 10 years later, he\u2019s the same guy,\u201d said Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau, who also coached Rose during his MVP season with the Bulls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s always been a team-first guy and winning\u2019s always at the forefront, he\u2019s always been a great teammate. He\u2019s happy when other people have success. He\u2019s most happy when the team wins. And whether he scores two points or he scores 20 points, he\u2019s the same guy. And he\u2019s doing it a lot of different ways, I think, I have mentioned this many times when we look at his net rating per 48 when he\u2019s on the floor, what he\u2019s done with us is pretty remarkable. Rose shot 11 of 15 from the field in 26 minutes, utterly outplaying Grizzlies star Ja Morant (8 points, 2-for-13 shooting). Morant not only produced a dud, he was ejected with one minute left for arguing calls.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Knicks were shorthanded at center with starter Nerlens Noel sitting because of a sprained ankle. He joined the first starting center Mitchell Robinson (broken foot) on the inactive list, and the squeeze was exacerbated by foul trouble to Monday\u2019s starter, Taj Gibson. It prompted Norvel Pelle into action as Thibodeau again resisted going small.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

But like most potential concerns during this Knicks hot stretch, it was never really a problem in Memphis. Gibson filled in well and grabbed 12 boards in 33 minutes. Pelle rejected three shots in 15 minutes. The Knicks pounded Memphis and swept the season series.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The Grizzlies (32-32) are decent but New York\u2019s opposition level turns up a notch with the Nuggets, Suns, Clippers, Lakers and Spurs all next on the schedule, in that order. But they\u2019re playing as well as anybody in the NBA.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Alec Burks returned Monday a two-week, eight-game absence because of COVID protocols. He didn\u2019t skip a beat with nine points in 16 minutes, but his night was cut short by a leg injury. It didn\u2019t appear serious.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

His presence cut into the time of starter Elfrid Payton, who had 10 points in 18 minutes. Rose certainly wasn\u2019t affected, however. He turned back the clock.<\/p>\n

On Monday night, the New York Knicks<\/a> won for the 12th time in the last 13 games, beating the Memphis Grizzlies<\/a> 118-104 behind 28 points from Julius Randle<\/a> and a season-high 25 points from Derrick Rose<\/a>. In a vacuum it wasn’t the most exciting or memorable game, but it did mean a lot to the Knicks and their long-suffering fans. \"\" <\/span> \u00a0\u00a0<\/span> <\/span>With that win, the Knicks are now 37-28, which guarantees they’ll have a winning season for the first time in nearly a decade. You have to go back to 2013, when Carmelo Anthony<\/a> and J.R. Smith led them to the No. 2 seed in the Eastern Conference, to find the last time the Knicks finished over .500. In the seven seasons since then they’ve gone a combined 184-374, and haven’t made a single playoff appearance.Speaking of the postseason, they are guaranteed a trip to the play-in tournament, and are closing in on securing an automatic berth with a top-six seed. Following Monday’s slate of games, they’re all alone in fourth place and have a three-game lead on the 7th place Boston Celtics<\/a>. There’s still one game left between the two teams, which will decide the season series, so the Knicks have some work to do.<\/p>\n

Regardless of what happens from here on out, this has been an incredible turnaround for the Knicks, who had only won 38 games in the past two seasons combined. Even coach Tom Thibodeau had to exchange his gruff demeanor for a celebration after this win, and when you’ve got him smiling and hugging people on the court, you know things are going well.<\/p>\n

Derrick Martell Rose<\/b> (born October 4, 1988) is an American professional basketball<\/a> player for the New York Knicks<\/a> of the National Basketball Association<\/a> (NBA).
