We were just in a position to take advantage of that.” Or as Bentley bluntly puts it: “People return our calls now.”Something else happened. The social awakening triggered by the death of George Floyd last summer fed into what the APGA was trying to achieve. Peaceful Black Lives Matter protesters walked along Washington Road, just yards from Augusta’s sacred turf. The PGA Tour’s earlier commitment was admirable but Jay Monahan, the current commissioner, did seem genuinely impacted by events in Minneapolis. It seems no coincidence the Tour duly increased involvement with the APGA; exemptions have been issued for tournaments, financial assistance has been offered and facilities have been provided free of charge.“Everything last summer increased the level of conversation,” Bentley says. “I think people opened their eyes and became more receptive to a tour like ours. Our profile has been raised and the tour has been given added credibility.” But isn’t it sad that such a horrific situation was “necessary” to change perspectives in the first place?“That’s kind of the way of the world,” says Bentley. “Look back to the civil rights movement. It takes an incident to really change hearts and minds. I remember George Floyd’s daughter saying ‘My daddy is going to change the world’ and that incident has.“The big barriers now are financial. Golf is still such an expensive sport. Clubs, top-level coaching, travel, access to top courses; it all adds up. Tennis has taken cost out of the equation if you show great promise. At some point golf has to do the same.”

Little things happen throughout a tournament year. The APGA has prepared him. “I started playing on there in the summer of my freshman year and being exposed to that competition has been invaluable,” he says. “There are a lot of people in my position and a lot of others who can offer tips after maybe missing their opportunity to make it to the big time.”

At 48, Tim O’Neal has encountered professional golf pre and post APGA. A journeyman tour player from Savannah, just 130 miles from the gates of Augusta National, he has never played at the Masters venue. He readily admits its dubious relationship with race makes him uneasy. So, too, the situation at clubs across the United States. “Not one time have I ever seen a black director of golf or head pro at a really nice golf course. Never,” says O’Neal. “So there have been a lot of improvements but there is a long way to go. I don’t think I could be in the golf business when I stop playing because of what I have seen. All the black head professionals I have seen are at public golf courses.”

O’Neal credits the APGA with “opening doors” for fellow black players. For years, he was the only player of colour competing at levels underneath the PGA Tour. “You get looks,” he adds. “It was never in my face as in blatant racism. Little things happen throughout a tournament year; people trying to kick you out of the locker room or player dining because they assume I’m not supposed to be there. People would assume because I’m black that I was a caddie. I would go up to get my credentials and be asked if I was a caddie. People don’t know any better, it’s just how they think.”

As Dillard points out: “Your skin colour isn’t on your scorecard.” This is true; but the upcoming swing of Elder will conjure memories of a troubled past and leave us to ponder what further progress is required. Back then the outings were headlined by a two-person scramble tournament, but the itinerary that week also included a golf clinic for local youth conducted by Stills.

Stills’ roots in golf run deeper than Bentley’s. Stills was 10 years old when his father, Roy Sr., first dropped him off at Osceola, which at the time didn’t have a range. So, with just 50 or so shag balls at his disposal, Stills found a spot underneath an oak tree and hit shot after shot until he ran out of balls, then scooped them all up and repeated the process. He did that most days until he graduated from Pensacola Catholic High School and received a golf scholarship to play for South Carolina State, an NAIA school where he was a two-time All-American.

As a pro, Stills amassed 31 wins on the mini-tours, played in two U.S. Opens and spent one season on the PGA Tour, in 1986. Of course, he’s most famous for how he earned his Tour card. Stills, 28 years old at the time, survived a six-for-five playoff at the Tour’s six-round Qualifying Tournament to earn his place in the big leagues that next year alongside Black golf legends Calvin Peete and Jim Thorpe. He went on to make 11 cuts in 23 starts, losing his card, and then took four more cracks at Q-School before getting a job as a teaching pro at Grand Cypress Golf Club in Orlando, Florida.

For 25 years, Stills remained the last Black golfer to advance through Q-School until Joseph Bramlett broke that streak in 2010, two years before the qualifying tournament shuttered its direct path to the PGA Tour. (Woods bypassed Q-School altogether in 1996 to earn his card.)

Back in Las Vegas, and a couple of years before Bramlett’s breakthrough, Stills was asked by Bentley why there weren’t more minorities, particularly Black players, competing at pro golf’s highest levels, especially since golf’s most dominant player of the past decade was one himself. While Stills attributed the game’s lack of diversity to several factors, one statement particularly caught Bentley’s attention: “If we could give them a place to play,” Stills said, “we could get some guys on Tour.”

Stills went on to explain how the United Golf Association, a professional golf league formed during the era of racial segregation, gave Black golfers a tour of their own while the PGA of America prevented them from competing in its events via its “Caucasian-only clause,” which wasn’t repealed until 1961. The UGA, also known affectionately as the “Chitlin Circuit,” was home to the likes of Lee Elder, Pete Brown and Charlie Sifford, the latter of whom won six National Negro Opens on the tour before going on to become the first Black golfer to join the PGA Tour, in 1961.

Bentley, well aware of the UGA after having recently watched a documentary titled, “Uneven Fairways: The Story of the Negro Leagues of Golf,” then looked Stills in the eye and said: “Let’s re-create it.”

“We got to work quick,” said Bentley, who within the year helped Stills turn an idea into reality.

Then the APGA was born.

USGA

‘We’ve got something here’

A tour played on pitted fairways and rock-strewn greens, from Cleveland to Charleston. It’s played a role in connecting others with jobs in the golf industry, including Clay Myers II, a PGA professional at Irving Country Club in Texas who was recently elected the first Black member of his section in 15 years, and it hopes to do more of the same through a recent partnership with the PGA of America, which will send recruiters to APGA events.

It’s a far cry from many of today’s other mini-tours, which only seem concerned with turning a profit.

“The Advocates is putting food on people’s table; it’s keeping people fed,” said Smith, who quit full-time professional golf a few years ago to take a job with True Spec, where he currently works as director of mobile sales and operations. “Unfortunately, a lot of people missed the opportunity that the tour can now bring because we all fell out of the game so early. At the introductory level, the game remains too expensive and too exclusionary, especially for young and underprivileged minorities, and the ones that end up pursuing golf often were afforded free or reduced rounds and lessons to get started. It also doesn’t help that the PGA of America has over 29,000 club professionals, and “less than half a percent of them are Black,” Smith says. “I think there’s a problem there.”

“If we could get more teaching pros that look like the kids in these communities,” Bentley adds, “it’ll fire the kids up to play.”

The issue of diversity also very much persists at the competitive level. On the PGA Tour, it’s even worse: there are just four Black members, including Woods. One of the first cases of court-ordered desegregation in American history was Holmes v. But this hope was misplaced, Demas said.

“Everyone’s talking in 1997, saying the floodgates are going to open and the PGA Tour will be all black and all these things,” he said. “What we’ve seen, of course, is that that’s totally not true. There’s fewer black golfers today than there were before Tiger.”

The golf industry has taken initiatives to improve its diversity. In 2011, the World Golf Foundation created a Diversity Task Force, which aims to “promote and increase diversity and inclusion across the game and the business of golf.”

But some experts say such moves and efforts undertaken by the organizations involved in “We Are Golf,” a diversity initiative, are simply not enough, especially when it comes to increasing African American representation in the sport. For Beatty, improving diversity means introducing minority players to the sport at a young age — an exposure that black children rarely get.

“If we look at golf on the professional level, be it in the PGA or LPGA, I think we would see a common thread: that many of these folks were introduced to the game of golf at a very young age,” Beatty said. “Simply by comparison, most African American children don’t have that same opportunity.”

The Drew Charter School golfers are living proof of Beatty’s thesis. Williams said that the majority of the championship-winning team started playing in elementary or middle school, around when he created the program 12 years ago, and have been playing ever since.

Dobbs said he started golfing when he was 7 — and he noticed how unique that was in his community.

“At first it seemed kind of odd when all my friends wanted to be playing basketball, football, soccer,” he said. “But I caught on, and you just realize that everybody can’t do the same thing.”

Demas said that this is what experts got wrong in the ʼ90s — young people don’t pick up golf because they see a player they want to emulate (though he admits there was a bump at the peak of Woods’ popularity.) They play, he said, because of a family or community connection to the game, something that is much more common if you’re white than if you’re black.

“Golf is a unique sport,” he said. “Young people don’t play golf because they see it in movies. Young people get into golf through connections, because their friends are playing or, even more importantly, because their family is playing. And that’s very unique in the world of American sport.”

For a while, black golfers found their connection to the sport at Historically Black Colleges and Universities, or HBCUs. The significance of these golf programs to increasing diversity in the sport at large, much like the significance of HBCU football and baseball programs diversifying , cannot be understated, Demas said.

“For many years, these football programs were the key to generating the fire for football in the black community, especially in the South,” he said. “HBCUs did that for a time in the world of golf, too.”

But that began to change when HBCUs ran into financial problems. Demas said programs were cut dramatically, or would increasingly recruit wealthier white players to fill out their rosters, which is still a problem to this day. Some attempts have been made to revitalize these programs’ potential to produce more professional black golfers — NBA star Steph Curry single-handedly funded the reincarnation of Howard University’s golf program this year — but the HBCUs have yet to recreate their success in diversifying other sports with golf.

“The broader challenge with HBCU programs is that talented black golfers, those that are out there, will often choose to attend a predominantly white institution. So they often have to start sort of recruiting white golfers in these things to stay afloat,” Demas said. “Integration takes place by sort of piecemeal taking black talent away from the black institutions, and then basically those black institutions begin to sort of suffer. And that’s what has been happening in the world of golf.”

In the Atlanta team’s victory, some experts see a model for the future

So how does the golf industry tackle the issue of diversity in the game? Some experts say that Williams’ program at Drew Charter — funded by community organizations like the East Lake Foundation and First Tee Metro Atlanta, which helped introduce golf to students who would otherwise have difficulty accessing the resources necessary to play — is a good blueprint.

For Beatty, organizations like First Tee are becoming the best way to increase diversity in a sport that has a notoriously high barrier to entry. He and other leaders in the African American golf community even met with Congressional Black Caucus members in May to discuss how best to support the growth of organizations like First Tee and give more young black people the opportunity to play golf.

“Part of the conundrum, at least in my mind, is that golf has to figure out a way to bring these resources to underserved and underprivileged children,” Beatty said. “The First Tee has been a great program to get more African American kids involved. But we do need an ongoing and sustained effort to get kids involved through community-based programs throughout America.”

And it doesn’t hurt to win big, either. Dobbs said that after winning the state championship, he has received messages of support and admiration from aspiring black golfers across the country, and he believes his team’s victory has been inspiring young African Americans in his community and beyond to pick up a club.

“We just created a ripple in the golf pond where it gets more black kids interested in golf, it gets more all-black golf teams together like this dynamic we had,” Dobbs said. “This is just the first link in a long chain.”

______________________________________________________________________________

THE GREATEST GOLFER OF ALL-TIME, AND BEST BLACK GOLFERS OF ALL TIME

Any list of the best Black golfers of all-time almost has to start with Tiger Woods. But everybody knows who plays it now ‘ everyone does.

From all walks of life, from every corner of the globe come men and women who play the game. From the six courses of Botswana and its 1,100 golfers to Japan with its 12 million to the U.S. with more than 1,000 courses and 25 million golfers, golf has arrived. The game is played by all ‘ Maoris of New Zealand, Hispanics of the Caribbean and Mexico, natives of Fiji, Hawaiians and Japanese and Koreans.

Nowhere has the game been played with more determination ‘ and under more imposing odds ‘ than with the African-American population in the United States. Blacks were assumed to caddie for their slavemasters in the South in the days of slavery, and they took up the game in large numbers in the early 1900s.

The golf tee, in fact, was invented by African-American George F. Grant in 1899. Grant was a dentist by trade and he took up golf after the Civil War. The patent office gave him a trademark on his invention of the tee, but he never marketed it. He shared some with friends and playing partners, but most he kept squirreled away in his home. He died in 1910 without accumulating much wealth from the invention, leaving those who followed him to amass the fortunes from the golf tee.

John J. Shippen, Jr., was an early golfing pioneer who played in the second U.S. Open. The son of a Presbyterian minister, he was only 16 years old in 1896 when the Open was played at Shinnecock Hills on Long Island. His father was sent by the church to minister to the Shinnecock Indians, and young Shippen met Scottish pro Willie Dunn when he was just 12 years old.

Shippen became quite a proficient player, rising to the position of assistant pro at Shinnecock Hills under Dunn. When the Open came to Shinnecock, he decided to enter after much prodding from members. The field of 35 was almost entirely foreign-born. When they learned Shippen, who was a light-skinned black, was in the field, a boycott immediately was planned.

Two reports are given on the solution offered by Theodore Havemeyer, the president of the USGA. One is that Havemeyer claimed Shippen was half Shinnecock Indian, which made his race of less importance. Another is that Havemeyer told the golfers that, yes, Shippen was black, and if the competition included but one player and that was Shippen, it would go on.

Regardless of what was told to the field, the tournament did proceed and Shippen played. He was tied for first place at the end of Day 1, but on the second he struggled on the par-4 13th and took an 11. He eventually finished seven strokes behind winner James Foulis. He would, however, play in four more U.S. Opens.

Another prominent early African-American was Joe Bartholomew, who grew up in New Orleans and entered the caddie ranks by the age of seven in 1887. He became an exceptional player, attended college in New York to study golf course architecture, and eventually returned home to ply his trade.

He designed several courses in New Orleans, but because Bartholomew was black, many members of the courses refused to let him play what he had designed.
John Brooks Dendy was very poor as a child in the 1920s, but he wanted to be a golfer. He collected several metal clubheads. He fashioned shafts out of broomhandles and played with the clubs for several years. He won the Southern Open at 18, then won it two more times ‘ in 1934 and 1936.

Racism and prejudice were still rampant over the country, of course, and in 1925 an organization for black golfers was founded ‘ the United Golfers Association. The African-Americans were not even considered for play in white tournaments. That slowly began to change, however ‘ with Bill Spiller and Ted Rhodes, and finally with Charlie Sifford.

Spiller was raised in the Tulsa, Okla., area after having been born in 1913. He went to college at Wiley in Texas, then moved to Southern California. An exceptional player, Spiller was repeatedly foiled in his attempts to play professionally. He developed friendships with many white pros, some of whom (Jimmy Demaret, Johnny Bulla) made valiant efforts to get him into tournaments where he could compete against the great pros of the era.

Solely because he was black, though, Spiller was omitted. And not just Spiller, but also Rhodes, another great golfer. The former heavyweight boxing champion, Joe Louis, worked his way into the white establishment because of his fame, playing in several tournaments in the 1950s. He had begun to play in 1935 and lost to Max Schmeling in 1936, many believe, because he was focused too much on golf and not enough on boxing.

The PGA of America contained a clause which was written into the bylaws in 1943, stating, Professional golfers of the Caucasian race, over the age of eighteen years, residing in North or South America, and who have served at least five years in the profession (either in the capacity of a professional or in the employ of a professional as his assistant) shall be eligible for membership.

In 1948, rumblings began, rumblings which one day would strike the clause down. Only three tournaments allowed black players to compete ‘ the Canadian Open, the Tam OShanter All-American in Chicago and the Los Angeles Open. Tournaments which were heretofore known as Opens, meaning tournaments which supposedly were open to everyone, often changed their names to Invitationals to exclude black players.

A provision in the PGA rules stated that anyone who finished in the top 60 was eligible to play the next week. Spiller and Rhodes did so in the 1948 L.A. Open and went on to Oakland, which was the next tour stop. They were incensed when they were not allowed to play and filed suit against the PGA.

Their attorney, Jonathan Rowell, was persuaded by the PGA that the situation was about to change and dropped the case. It didnt. But Demaret, Jackie Burke and Leland Gibson constantly campaigned for the black players to their fellow pros. And in 1961, the Caucasians-only rule finally came to a head.

By now, Spiller was reduced to caddying to earn money. One day in Los Angeles, a gentleman for whom he caddied asked Spiller why did not play. Spiller told the man, Harry Braverman, about the clause.
Braverman advised Spiller to write to the California Attorney General, Stanley Mosk. An incredulous Mosk told the PGA that they could no longer play an event on a public course in California, then wrote the attorneys general of most other States with the same information.

The PGA finally bowed to the waves of negative publicity in November of 1961, canceling the clause. Charlie Sifford, Pete Brown, Lee Elder and many others were free to tee it up in a tournament. They endured much abuse and were refused many public services in the towns where they played, but played on regardless.

Brown was the first African-American to win a tournament when he won the Waco Turner Open near Ardmore, Okla., 1964. Sifford won the 1967 Greater Hartford Open and the 1969 L.A. Open. Lee Elder in 1975 was the first black to play in the Masters.

Since then, others have blazed the trail.
