Super Bowl XLV was held at the venue at the end of that NFL season.<span class=\"dmnc_KVC7s pl-1\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"body-text app_body_bodyText__1RXys mb-8\">\n<section>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>NFL owners voted Tuesday to expand the regular season from 16 to 17 games, a landmark shift that, beyond the obvious impact on the Cowboys\u2019 2021 schedule, removes a hoop through which the Cowboys needed to jump in order to host their next Super Bowl in Arlington.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>The league generally schedules a slate of international games each year in hopes to grow interest in the NFL across the world. Most team owners, however, are reluctant to sacrifice a game in their home stadium to support the initiative.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>In 2014, the NFL enacted a policy to improve club participation in the International Series. Any franchise that won a Super Bowl hosting bid became required to play at least one home game in London within five years of the bid\u2019s acceptance.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>The Cowboys are interested in hosting a Super Bowl again. They haven\u2019t done so since Feb. 6, 2011, and their earliest plausible opportunity for the event\u2019s return is February 2027. But if he can avoid it, owner Jerry Jones would prefer not to export a home game from AT&amp;T Stadium in the process.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>Now, he can avoid it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>Tuesday\u2019s schedule resolution included language that removes Super Bowl host clubs from their obligation to send a home game abroad.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>\u201cThat provision was included to really get the original International Series off the ground and making sure that there was inventory,\u201d said Chris Halpin, NFL executive vice president and chief strategy and growth officer. \u201cIt was an element in return for getting a Super Bowl, there would be a game abroad. The reality is now that we\u2019ve committed long-term inventory and volunteer teams like the Jaguars, who are going to continue to have a long-term commitment to London \u2026we don\u2019t require that Super Bowl commitment to inventory.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>Jones is not off the hook entirely.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>No NFL owner is.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>A 17-game schedule provided the league a novel way to export home games. Beginning this season, the 17th game will be an interconference matchup. Each AFC team picks up an extra home game in 2021 against an NFC team. That will alternate each year; NFC teams will be the ones who play a ninth home game in 2022 versus an interconference opponent.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>In 2021, the Cowboys will travel to play the New England Patriots.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>Starting in 2022, four of these 16 interconference games will be played internationally, and there will be a rotation so that, within an eight-year span, each NFL club will host at least one interconference game abroad.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"app_presets_nativoArticleInline__3tgHh w-full py-6\"><\/div>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>A trip to the Patriots\u2019 Gillette Stadium makes a difficult Cowboys road schedule even tougher.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>Aside from the NFC East, Dallas already was scheduled to play the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs, New Orleans Saints, Los Angeles Chargers and Minnesota Vikings on the road. The Bucs and Chiefs competed in last month\u2019s Super Bowl.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>At home, the Cowboys will play the NFC East, Atlanta Falcons, Carolina Panthers, Denver Broncos, Las Vegas Raiders and Arizona Cardinals in 2021. The schedule of dates and times won\u2019t be finalized until later this spring.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"\">\n<div id=\"native-article-1\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>With the expanded regular season, the standard preseason was shortened from four to three games.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>But this year, the Cowboys will play four. One will be the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 5 against the Pittsburgh Steelers in Canton, Ohio. Then, they\u2019ll play their customary three exhibitions.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>Each NFC team in 2021 will play two preseason games at home and one on the road.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"body-text-paragraph\"><strong>Each AFC team, because of the extra home game during the regular season, will play one exhibition at home and two on the sports portfolios are underpinned by their teams and enhanced by their media, gambling, esports, auto racing, hospitality and mixed martial arts businesses.<\/strong><\/h2>\n<hr class=\"embed-base rule-embed color-accent border-solid weight-light\" \/>\n<div class=\"article_paragraph_2\"><\/div>\n<p><strong>The NFL playoffs kick off this Saturday, and the New England Patriots will be watching the action on television. The squad has reached the Super Bowl nine times since 2000, the rookie year for quarterback Tom Brady, and taken home the trophy in six of those visits. But Brady is leading the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the postseason this year while the Patriots delivered their first losing season in two decades.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The setback has not hurt the fortunes of Pats owner Robert Kraft, whose well-timed investments in non-NFL assets\u2014as well as the enduring profits of football franchises\u2014have delivered a winning year for the billionaire.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><em>Forbes<\/em>\u00a0pegs the enterprise value (equity plus net debt) of the Kraft family\u2019s sports holdings at $5.3 billion, up $800 million from last year. The jump is the largest among sports owners and lands the group at No. 7 on the 2020 list of the World\u2019s Most Valuable Sports Empires, up from eighth last year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The value of the Patriots increased by 7% in <em>Forbes<\/em>\u2019 <a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikeozanian\/2020\/09\/10\/the-nfls-most-valuable-teams-2020-how-much-is-your-favorite-team-worth\/\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikeozanian\/2020\/09\/10\/the-nfls-most-valuable-teams-2020-how-much-is-your-favorite-team-worth\/\" target=\"_self\" rel=\"noopener\" data-ga-track=\"InternalLink:https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/mikeozanian\/2020\/09\/10\/the-nfls-most-valuable-teams-2020-how-much-is-your-favorite-team-worth\/\" aria-label=\"2020 NFL team valuations\">2020 NFL team valuations<\/a>, adding $300 million to the Kraft empire. The coronavirus dented revenue in 2020, as it did for every NFL team, but the league\u2019s profit machine is expected to resume in 2021. The Kraft family also owns the New England Revolution (MLS),\u00a0Kraft Analytics Group\u00a0(sports data analytics) and\u00a0Boston Uprising\u00a0(esports franchise), as well as a small piece of UFC. Talent agency giant Endeavor paid $4 billion for the mixed-martial-arts promotion in 2016, and its current enterprise value is\u00a0<a class=\"color-link\" title=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MikeOzanian\/status\/1344276215524425728?s=20\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MikeOzanian\/status\/1344276215524425728?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\" data-ga-track=\"ExternalLink:https:\/\/twitter.com\/MikeOzanian\/status\/1344276215524425728?s=20\" aria-label=\"$9.4 billion\">$9.4 billion<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The 20 most valuable sports empires have a combined enterprise value of more than $100 billion, led by Liberty Media at No. 1 with $13 billion. Controlled by billionaire John Malone, Liberty owns MLB\u2019s Atlanta Braves, Formula One and small pieces of the\u00a0Drone Racing League\u00a0and\u00a0Denver\u2019s Ball Arena.
