Many of you have said that shouldn&#8217;t matter, but it does, it absolutely does. And it should. Those championship banners are there for a reason, and the goal should ALWAYS be to pursue more.<\/strong><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<\/article>\n<div><strong>Mike Woodson is a great basketball mind and a tireless worker. Ask NBA legends like Doc Rivers, who loved having Woodson on his staff. Ask Tom Thibodeau, current boss at the New York Knicks. They are much improved this season, and he&#8217;ll tell you that Mike Woodson has has a lot to do with that.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/header>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Things are moving quickly for new Indiana head coach Mike Woodson after he was <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Article\/Mike-Woodson-Indiana-basketball-hires-head-coach-attempting-to-finalize-Big-Ten-replaces-Archie-Miller--162914653\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">hired by the school on Sunday<\/a>, rocking the college basketball world and <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/LongFormArticle\/Mike-Woodson-Indiana-Hoosiers-basketball-coaching-search-hire-reaction-Thad-Matta-Archie-Miller-163238611\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">drawing some heavy criticism from media members<\/a>. He currently is an assistant with the New York Knicks.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">From Indianapolis Broad Ripple, Woodson played at IU from 1976-77 through 1979-80, and is a career 19.8 points per game scorer. Woodson, who\u00a0turned 63 on March 24, is currently in his 22nd season as an NBA assistant or head coach.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">He has a career head coaching record of 315-365 that includes at complete rebuild of the Atlanta Hawks that started in 2004-05.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">His first three seasons with the Hawks, they went 13-69, 26-56 and 30-52 and they completely rebuilt the franchise. His fourth year, the Hawks went to the playoffs. His fifth (47-35) and sixth (53-29) years, the Hawks won a first-round playoff series and finished second in their division.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">As the head coach of the New York Knicks for parts of three seasons, from 2011-12 to 2013-14, Woodson was 109-79. His second season, he led the Knicks to a 54-28 record. The Knicks won a playoff series over the Boston Celtics before falling to the Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference semifinals. Woodson\u2019s 54-28 record in 2012-13 was the Knicks\u2019 best record since 1996-97.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Among the reasons the Knicks brought Woodson back as an assistant are his offensive mind and his ability to relate to younger players.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">\u201cI think it\u2019s a wonderful hire,\u201d former IU great, NBA player and current Indiana Pacers assistant coach Calbert Cheaney told Peegs.com.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe\u2019s a great coach with a wealth of experience, including a wealth of NBA experience. I know he understands Indiana basketball. He played there. He\u2019s been around the program for many years. He\u2019s always come back even though he\u2019s been in the league.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">\u201cHe understands Indiana basketball.\u201d<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><strong><span class=\"s1\">Former Ohio State, Xavier and Butler coach Thad Matta has agreed to a staff position in an non-recruiting role, meaning he can&#8217;t recruit off campus. In one fell swoop, <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Article\/Mike-Woodson-Indiana-basketball-hires-head-coach-attempting-to-finalize-Big-Ten-replaces-Archie-Miller--162914653\/\">the Hoosiers hired New York Knicks assistant and former head coach Mike Woodson as their new head coach,<\/a> replacing <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Coach\/Archie-Miller-200\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Archie Miller<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Article\/Thad-Matta-hired-as-associate-AD-for-Indiana-Hoosiers-basketball-Mike-Woodson-new-head-coach--163238552\/\">and hired former Ohio State head coach <\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/247sports.com\/Coach\/Thad-Matta-1257\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Thad Matta<\/a> as their new associate athletic director.<\/strong><strong>Woodson played for Indiana from 1976-1980 before going on to a decade-plus NBA career. In his career, Woodson is 315-365 as a head coach and made the playoffs five out of nine seasons (three with the Hawks and two with the Knicks). Woodson\u2019s teams never made it further than the Conference Semifinals.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Matta is expected to assist the Indiana coaching staff that will be led by new coach Mike Woodson. The 53-year-old Matta last coached Ohio State during the 2016-17 season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Matta was head coach at Ohio State for 13 seasons from 2004-05 to 2016-17 and compiled a 337-123 record. His tenure with the Buckeyes also included two Final Four appearances, five Big Ten regular-season titles and four Big Ten Tournament titles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Indiana\u2019s coaching search began earlier this month after firing Miller. The Hoosiers finished this season with a 12-15 record.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Dolson released a statement after news broke on Miller\u2019s departure. He admitted while it was a difficult decision, it would benefit the Hoosiers\u2019 basketball program moving forward. <a title=\"National Basketball Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Basketball_Association\">National Basketball Association<\/a> (NBA) and spent his entire coaching career in the league until taking the Indiana job. He served as the head coach of the <a title=\"Atlanta Hawks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Atlanta_Hawks\">Atlanta Hawks<\/a> from 2004 to 2010 and the <a title=\"New York Knicks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Knicks\">New York Knicks<\/a> from 2012 to 2014.
