And Ivey identified as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netsdaily.com\/\">Nets<\/a> fan growing up.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"MxEwAU\"><strong>Not to mention he was born in Harlem, grew up in Queens and played some high school ball in New Jersey at Blair Academy. And now, he\u2019s joined the Nets as an assistant coach, the ninth assistant coach or development assistant on rookie head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbnation.com\/21431940\/steve-nash-championship-quest-untitled\">Steve Nash<\/a>\u2019s staff. For Hawks PG <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nba.com\/playerfile\/royal_ivey\/index.html\">Royal Ivey<\/a>, that was not the case &#8211;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>necessarily.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;In high school I wore<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>number 12,&#8221; says Ivey, who<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>led Cardozo HS in Queens to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>their first-ever New York<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>PSAL title during his senior<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>year before doing a post graduate year<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>at Blair Academy in New<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Jersey.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;When I went to the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>University of Texas for<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>college, I decided to add 12<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>to that to represent making<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the move to the next level.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As a four-year starter at<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>UT, Ivey and his No. 24 jersey<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>were a part of more<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>victories than anyone else<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>in school history. But when<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>it was time to jump to the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>NBA, he had a decision to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>make.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I thought about choosing<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the place I got drafted as<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>my number for the pros, but<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I didn&#8217;t like No. 37 (which is<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>where he was chosen by the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hawks in the second round of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the 2004 NBA Draft).
