In freestyle, he was the <a title=\"List of Cadet, Junior, and Espoir World Champions in men's freestyle wrestling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Cadet,_Junior,_and_Espoir_World_Champions_in_men%27s_freestyle_wrestling#Junior_Worlds,_2018\u2013_(20_and_Under)\">&#8217;19 Junior World Champion<\/a> at 74 kilograms while representing the <a title=\"USA Wrestling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/USA_Wrestling\">United States<\/a>. As a folkstyle wrestler, Carr is an <a title=\"NCAA Division I\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NCAA_Division_I\">NCAA Division I<\/a> <a title=\"All-America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All-America#Wrestling\">All-American<\/a> and two-time <a title=\"Big 12 Conference\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Big_12_Conference\">Big 12 Conference<\/a> champion out of the <a title=\"Iowa State University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Iowa_State_University\">Iowa State University<\/a> and was a four-time <a title=\"Ohio High School Athletic Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ohio_High_School_Athletic_Association\">OHSAA<\/a> champion as a <a title=\"Scholastic wrestling\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scholastic_wrestling\">high schooler<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> As of March 9, 2021, Carr is the #3-ranked 157-pound <a title=\"National Collegiate Athletic Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Collegiate_Athletic_Association\">NCAA wrestler<\/a> in the country as per Intermat.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19666\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/D-CARR.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"268\" height=\"188\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>Carr, Iowa State&#8217;s wildly-talented sophomore, defeated Rider&#8217;s Jesse Dellavecchia, 4-0, to win an NCAA wrestling title at 157 pounds on Saturday night here at the Enterprise Center.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>Exactly 40 years after his dad, Nate, won his first title for Iowa State, David Carr did the same. He scored a takedown in the second period then added a point for riding-time in the third to win his first collegiate national wrestling title.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>&#8220;All glory to God,&#8221; Carr said. &#8220;With Him, I couldn&#8217;t do this. I walk by faith, not by sight. His uncle, Jimmy, made the 1972 U.S. Olympic team at just 17 years old. His older brother, Nate Carr Jr., wrestled at Iowa State and now coaches at Lock Haven.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>&#8220;I told my dad, when I decided to come to Iowa State, I wanted to come here and bring back the program,&#8221; David Carr said afterward, and then added: &#8220;And break all of his records while I&#8217;m at it.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>It&#8217;s in the program for which he now wrestles. On Saturday, David Carr became Iowa State&#8217;s 70th individual national champion. He&#8217;s the first to do so since Kyven Gadson won in 2015 at 197 pounds. Gadson famously told ESPN in the post-match interview that he\u00a0&#8220;just wants some ice cream,&#8221; after pinning Ohio State&#8217;s Kyle Snyder.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>Of course, Carr remembered that, and delivered his own version of it on Saturday night after he won.<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"gnt_m gnt_x gnt_x__lbl gnt_x__al\" aria-label=\"advertisement\">\n<div id=\"~ad-slot-7103-ia-desmoines-C1150-native-article_link-sports-college-features_iowastate-3\" class=\"gnt_x_sl gnt_x_al\" data-g-r=\"lazy\" data-gl-method=\"lazyLoadX\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-19667\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/DC-WREST.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"297\" height=\"170\" \/><\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>&#8220;I just want some gummy bears,&#8221; he told the cameras\u00a0and smiled.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>That&#8217;s a nod to Gadson, of course, but it&#8217;s also a reference to\u00a0something Iowa State coach Kevin Dresser has preached to Carr since he first arrived in Ames.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>Dresser has constantly told Carr that if he doesn&#8217;t eat gummy bears and gets better sleep, he&#8217;d win multiple national titles. That&#8217;s a lighter way of saying, eat better and take care of yourself in order to wrestle your best.\u00a0Carr&#8217;s win on Saturday made him Dresser&#8217;s first individual national champion in his 14 years as a college head coach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>But if nothing else, that post-match spoke to Carr&#8217;s calm demeanor that he displayed not just on Saturday night, but throughout the tournament this week.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>Again, there&#8217;s history here. Two years ago, he <a class=\"gnt_ar_b_a\" href=\"https:\/\/www.desmoinesregister.com\/story\/sports\/college\/iowa-state\/wrestling\/2019\/08\/14\/uww-junior-mens-freestyle-world-championships-iowa-state-wrestler-david-carr-74-kilograms-isu\/2007484001\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" data-t-l=\"|inline|intext|n\/a\">won a Junior men&#8217;s freestyle world championship<\/a>. He&#8217;s previously won a Cadet men&#8217;s freestyle world medal, too, and has wrestled many of the nation&#8217;s best Senior-level men&#8217;s freestylers, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>As such, he has much larger aspirations than just an NCAA title. He wants to bring the Iowa State program back\u00a0and contend for team championships. He wants to continue chase world and Olympic golds after that, followed by a successful coaching career, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>But he also wants to best his dad&#8217;s accomplishments. That means, perhaps, four national titles, a daunting task that only four wrestlers have ever achieved in the 93-year history of the NCAA Wrestling Championships.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"gnt_ar_b_p\"><strong>David Carr now has the opportunity to add his name to that exclusive list.
