Pele backs PSG forward Kylian Mbappe to be his ‘heir<\/h1>\n

Kylian Mbappe’s Champions League destruction of Barcelona in midweek has seen proclamations of a changing of the guard at football’s most elite level<\/strong><\/p>\n

As Kylian Mbappe completed his hat-trick against Barcelona on Tuesday, so the heir apparent platitudes began again.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Newspaper scribes and the Twitteratti alike rushed to claim that the handover of the world\u2019s greatest player baton was nigh.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And even former Manchester United and England defender Rio Ferdinand joined in.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI just feel he\u2019s the guy now that\u2019s going to take the throne, take the crown, he\u2019s standing alone at the moment,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s for everybody to catch up to him now.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But he will also know there\u2019s a marked difference between labelling someone a great and billing them as the greatest of an era given that, for the latter, there\u2019ll never be an exact measure.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Someone who knows a thing or two about such debates is Pele and it\u2019s something he discusses in the excellent new documentary bearing his name which is released on Netflix on Tuesday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI\u2019ve never believed in the best player in the world,\u201d he says. \u201cTo be the best player in the world you need to be better in every position than everyone else. And that\u2019s tricky, isn\u2019t it?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

He\u2019s right, of course, because as talented as Mbappe is, how can we say he\u2019s a better footballer than Virgil van Dijk, Sergio Ramos, Jan Oblak and Manuel Neuer when they are all such different players with different jobs?<\/strong><\/p>\n

We haven\u2019t yet seen whether or not Mbappe can cope with the physical and mental demands of playing in a serious league week in, week out, either, so can we really say he\u2019ll be a better player than Kevin De Bruyne in the coming years?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Both are wonderful footballers but the greatest of the next decade? It\u2019s impossible to say.<\/strong><\/p>\n

As for the debate about The GOAT \u2014 the greatest of all time \u2014 that\u2019s even harder.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Who knows if Pele and Diego Maradona\u2019s bodies would have coped with the demands of modern-day football like Ronaldo and Messi have been able to?<\/strong><\/p>\n

And, likewise, who knows if Ronaldo or Messi<\/a> would have achieved what those two achieved playing in a time when opponents weren\u2019t just allowed to kick you but were encouraged to do so?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The political pressure Pele played under was astounding and we\u2019ll never know if that trio or those numerous other great players could have dealt with it as he did.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Maybe, maybe not.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Such debates aren\u2019t just limited to football.<\/strong><\/p>\n

And instead of constantly wanting to proclaim different sportsmen and women as the greatest of all time, we\u2019d be better off simply being grateful to all of them for the magic they\u2019ve given us and will continue to give us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

It\u2019s futile comparing players from different eras. But I would say is, no player has ever singlehandedly ( no pun intended ) turned bang average sides like Napoli and Argentina at the time, into what they achieved with Maradona.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Original Ronaldo, was simblime player…oftern forgotten on these lists.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For me, nobody lit up the stage like Ronaldinho did in his prime. If he was able to stay out of the clubs he would be up there but his compatriot Ronaldo(the OG) is the GOAT. He was incredible for Brazil, Inter, and Real. Simply the best.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Watching the Maradona movie shows the amount of abuse he had to put up with. How he controlled a ball as it bobbled around on a pitch like the local park is amazing.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
