This is Sanders\u2019 first college head-coaching position.<\/span><\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"css-1dbjc4n r-18u37iz r-1wbh5a2\">\n<div class=\"css-901oao css-bfa6kz r-m0bqgq r-18u37iz r-1qd0xha r-a023e6 r-16dba41 r-ad9z0x r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong><span class=\"css-901oao css-16my406 r-poiln3 r-bcqeeo r-qvutc0\">@DeionSanders<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div id=\"story-content\" class=\"story-content entry-content\">\n<p><strong>This is not your grandfather\u2019s Jackson State football team.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But new Tigers head football coach Deion \u201cCoach Prime\u201d Sanders wishes it were.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Those were the days when the best NFL prospects came from historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) \u2013 when Jackson State sent guys such as Walter Payton to the Chicago Bears, Lem Barney to the Detroit Lions and Harold Jackson to the Los Angeles Rams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the years before full integration, Black colleges were the only places a promising Black player could go to reach his full potential in sports. In this new world order \u2013 prompted by a mix of renewed social activism amid the Black Lives Matter movement and a more critical look at the inequities of the multibillion-dollar college sports complex \u2013 top-flight Black players are now looking seriously at HBCUs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>So, who better to lead this movement than Sanders, the only man to professionally hit a home run and get a touchdown in the same seven-day period (1989); the only person to suit up on the same day for two professional teams (1992) (Note: He did not actually play in the baseball game); and the only person to play in a Super Bowl and a World Series.<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"single-recirc\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong>Rashad Milligan, who covers Jackson State for the <em>Clarion-Ledger<\/em> newspaper, follows Sanders\u2019 impact daily.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEverything he does is like the talk of the talk,\u201d said Milligan, an Atlanta native. \u201cBack in January, Deion had his boombox stolen, that was talk of the town for two or three days.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIn a community group on Facebook, people were discussing, \u2018Why are so many planes flying over the neighborhood?\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cAnd someone was like, \u2018It\u2019s probably the government looking for Deion\u2019s boombox.\u2019 \u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The gigantic portable, music machine was returned safely.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Coach Prime in full effect<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The bright lights, the hoopla, the \u201cPrime Time\u201d is in full force in Jackson, Mississippi.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThis is what we bring to the table,\u201d Sanders said this week in a Zoom interview. \u201cThat\u2019s something that\u2019s always traveled with me. That\u2019s something that has always been a part of me in every sport, in every aspect of my life. Solis\/AP Photo<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Sanders said he also expects his players \u201cto dominate not only on the field but also in the classroom.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Step one occurs Sunday at 2 p.m. ET, when the Tigers (4-8 last season) take their home field against Edward Waters College out of Jacksonville, Florida. Neither Sanders nor fans will see the full impact of his recruiting class until the fall, because some recruits played high school or college ball in the fall and are ineligible for the spring season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Late in the week, Sanders still had not decided who would start at quarterback: sophomore Jalon Jones or redshirt freshman Quincy Casey. The competition was continuing, he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanders is hesitant to point out potential stars, but the team returns the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC) preseason player of the year, junior Keonte Hampton, at linebacker. But preseason All-SWAC senior running back Keshawn Harper is no longer with the team.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanders confirmed reports that the defense looks to be further ahead than the offense but says that\u2019s exactly how he wants it to be. But he said that in the spring, with the insertion of some of the new recruits, the two units will be closer in terms of talent level.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For most observers, that\u2019s a nod toward Sanders\u2019 son, Shedeur Sanders, a four-star recruit who changed his commitment from Florida Atlantic to Jackson State after Sanders\u2019 hiring.<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"single-recirc\">\n<h4 class=\"single-recirc-header\"><strong>Related Story<\/strong><\/h4>\n<h5 class=\"single-recirc-hed\"><strong><a class=\"single-recirc-link\" href=\"https:\/\/theundefeated.com\/features\/shedeur-sanders-is-confident-playing-for-his-dad-deion-sanders-jackson-state-hbcu-nfl-qb\/?source=single-recirc%22\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"single-recirc-image\" src=\"https:\/\/theundefeated.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Shedeur-Sanders-e1605120572121.jpg?w=1400?w=1500?w=1240?w=145&amp;quality=80%22\" data-src=\"https:\/\/theundefeated.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Shedeur-Sanders-e1605120572121.jpg?w=1400?w=1500?w=1240?w=145&amp;quality=80&quot;\" \/> Shedeur Sanders says playing for his dad Deion Sanders at Jackson State will prepare him for the NFL <span class=\"single-recirc-read-link\">Read now<\/span><\/a><\/strong><\/h5>\n<\/aside>\n<p><strong>Sanders\u2019 older son, Shilo, who played defensive back for South Carolina in 2020, will also make his Tigers debut in fall 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Shedeur Sanders, who says he will use this season mainly as an observer to get used to the speed of the game as he transitions from high school to college, has schooled his teammates on how to survive the Coach Prime School of Hard Knocks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cJust, do your job,\u201d Shedeur Sanders said. \u201cJust execute. He expects you to go above and beyond. He expects wins. Be a dog, really.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As far as the hoopla, the media and the cameras, Shedeur \u2013 who has on-the-job training in several of Sanders\u2019 reality TV shows \u2013 said his teammates are settling down.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou\u2019ve just got to be yourself,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce you start acting out of character, people see that. We\u2019re just growing as a team.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Holmes said the Coach Prime atmosphere is apparent, but the players just focus on football.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanders\u2019 first Jackson State staff also includes special teams coach Alan Ricard, a former NFL running back; defensive backs coach Kevin Mathis, a nine-year NFL veteran who coached the Prime Truth 7-on-7 team; Gary Harrell, who played two seasons with the New York Giants; and defensive line coach Jeff Weeks, who coached linebackers for the Buffalo Bills under Rex Ryan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Some of the others, such as offensive coordinator\/quarterbacks coach Michael Pollock, have extensive high school or college coaching experience.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For Edward Waters coach Greg Ruffin, who worked at Jackson State for six years, serving as recruiting coordinator and running backs coach, Sunday\u2019s game is \u201ckind of a homecoming.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s not about Deion. It\u2019s not about me,\u201d Ruffin said. \u201cWe\u2019re going to take it one play at a time.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe\u2019ve got a young team. We\u2019re just going to play football. I got to make sure that my best 22 or 30 guys are playing as well as their best 22-30.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ruffin said depth could become an issue if the game requires his team to rely heavily on reserves, because the scholarship discrepancy would then favor Jackson State, an FCS school. They\u2019re going to have more depth,\u201d Ruffin said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Edward Waters went 1-10 last season with losses to two SWAC opponents, 61-0 against Southern and 41-14 against Prairie View.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ruffin said his team, also known as the Tigers, will bring speed and experience at running back with Corey Hammett and De\u2019Shaun Hugee, and at receiver with Idaho transfer Steavenson Fernand and Southern Illinois transfer Sam Thompson.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The defense will be anchored by defensive end Jaren Wilson, who is 6-foot-1 and 240 pounds, and defensive back Christian Hayes, \u201cwho plays all over the secondary.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanders says his scouting staff indicates that Edward Waters will not be pushovers.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThose guys are greedy, they\u2019re tough,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cThey do understand this is a tremendous opportunity, and they want to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity. And showcase some of the talent they have, as well as their program.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s up to us to disarm and disable that \u2013 to hit them as soon as they get off the bus.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanders sees his program\u2019s mission as impacting athletics far beyond Jackson State and the SWAC. He knows he is pushing the envelope to get HBCUs to go after the top football talent with the expectation that they will be taken seriously.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe impact could be phenomenal with the exposure of the documentary,\u201d Sanders said. \u201cIt can change the culture. It can change lives. \u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt could put a flashlight on what\u2019s been so prominent and so consistent for decades.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He said the impact is already being felt in that Jackson State\u2019s six spring games are scheduled to be carried on ESPN3 or ESPNU, which can have an impact financially.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He expects more of the same, or even more, in the fall.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m pretty sure when we do what we do, it\u2019s going to be more in the fall and that can translate into revenue \u2013 economic value to the university.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Sanders and his inaugural season will be featured in a documentary series produced by Barstool Sports and SMAC Entertainment, which is co-owned by former NFL star Michael Strahan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mark W. Wright, showrunner and director of the documentary, said: \u201cThe impact of Coach Prime here is visible everywhere you go. There\u2019s billboards \u2026 there\u2019s a Subway commercial. He is very much here. And with him comes visibility to Jackson State, visibility to HBCUs in general.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhen he walks into a room, [whether] it\u2019s a literal room a virtual room or on your TV screen, there\u2019s an expectation that things are going to be different.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At Jackson State, that translates into players running laps for having the wrong socks or the wrong pants.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cEven though he\u2019s 53 years old, he\u2019s still that dude. On Sunday Jackson State and Edward Waters begin something that&#8217;s never been done and play a football game in the Spring and it counts.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>JSU opens its season with the eyes of college football upon it. On September 21 of last year Pro Football Hall of Famer and the best defensive back to play the game, <dfn><a href=\"https:\/\/gojsutigers.com\/coaches.aspx?rc=111\" rel=\"smarttag\" rev=\"111\">Deion Sanders<\/a><\/dfn>, was introduced as the programs 21<sup>st<\/sup> head football coach. It&#8217;s been a 24\/7 grind for the unit and the Tigers went out and secured the top class at the FCS level and the best class at an Historically Black College and University \u2013 ever.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The student-athletes reported to campus in early January and worked their tails off to get where we are today: to play a football game in front of the best fans in the country at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>On to football<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The Tigers return several starters on defense and are led by six-time All-American, reigning SWAC Defensive Player of the Year and Spring 2021 SWAC Defensive Player of the Year, <dfn><a href=\"https:\/\/gojsutigers.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=1180\" rel=\"smarttag\" rev=\"1180\">Keonte Hampton<\/a><\/dfn>. Since earning a starting position as a freshman, Hampton has consistently made an impact. Fall of 2021 the West Point, Mississippi native tallied 106 tackles, 69 solo stops and 37 assisted. In a thrilling 31-28 overtime win over in-state foe Mississippi Valley State, Hampton tallied a career-high 15 tackles and forced and recovered a fumble. Hampton averaged an eye-popping 13 tackles per game. In the Tigers base 4-3 defensive package, Hampton has shifted to the outside linebacker position. <dfn><a href=\"https:\/\/gojsutigers.com\/roster.aspx?rp_id=1162\" rel=\"smarttag\" rev=\"1162\">Khalil Arrington<\/a><\/dfn>, the team&#8217;s third-leading tackle from 2019 will play at middle linebacker. Arrington finished with 49 tackles, 28 solo stops and assisted with 21 tackles. But that doesn\u2019t mean its the only one he thinks should exist for HBCUs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The new Jackson State head coach made a second appeal to bowl game sponsors to look at HBCUs moving forward, appealing to the fact they may not be excited about the return on investment with FBS programs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI know you not happy. I know you kinda upset but you really can\u2019t say nothing because its a turbulent time,\u201d Sanders said in Under Armour gear while working out in PrimeU attire. Sanders clearly knows this (<a href=\"https:\/\/hbcugameday.com\/2020\/10\/17\/deion-sanders-jsu-contract-five-things-to-know\/\">heck, its a condition for a bonus in his JSU contract<\/a>) but he doesn\u2019t think the game between the MEAC and SWAC champions is the end-all, be-all of what bowls could be available for HBCUs.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI know the HBCUs are saying: Well we have a bowl game. But its only for the two who are going to play in the championship. What about all the rest who had wonderful seasons. What about all the rest of the fans that would love a week\u2019s vacation at one of these pristine destinations at which college bowls offers?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Deion Sanders promised great attendance and energy surrounding a potential bowl bid.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWhy don\u2019t you try us at an HBCU? I promise you, we\u2019re not only gonna show up, we\u2019re gonna show out. We\u2019re gonna travel deep. And we\u2019re gonna really have a wonderful time and be appreciative and thankful of the opportunity. Try us, at an HBCU.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Deion Sanders determined to \u2018think big\u2019<\/h2>\n<h2>The inaugural Celebration Bowl featured the game\u2019s highest attendance as over 35,000 fans packed into the Georgia Dome.<br \/>\nOf course, there have been several other HBCU bowl games.<\/h2>\n<h2>There was the Heritage Bowl (featuring the MEAC vs. SWAC) and the Pioneer Bowl (featuring the CIAA vs. the SIAC), as well as several other bowl games throughout the season.<\/h2>\n<p>Someone respond to Sanders that the classic games \u2014 Bayou Classic, Florida Classic, etc\u2014 served as bowl-game-like atmosphere. Sanders didn\u2019t quite see it that way.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo major money for teams or television exposure for the kids,\u201d Sanders tweeted. \u201cLets think big.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/media.sportbusiness.com\/news\/nbc-sports-extends-rights-for-bayou-classic\/\">The Bayou Classic was broadcast on NBC for decades before moving to NBC Sports<\/a>, and often receives higher ratings than FBS bowls.
