Media has named <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/losangeles\/search\/results?q=Michele Ghee\">Michele Ghee<\/a> as chief executive of Ebony and Jet magazines, which were bought out of bankruptcy last month.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment combx paywall__content\"><strong>Bridgeman Sports, a company owned by former Milwaukee Bucks forward Ulysses \u201cJunior\u201d Bridgeman, bought Ebony Media Operations <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/chicago\/news\/2020\/12\/22\/ex-nba-bridgeman-wins-bid-to-buy-ebony-magazine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in December<\/a> for $14 million.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment combx paywall__content\"><strong>Ebony Media had\u00a0filed for bankruptcy in July and had been sold by Chicago-based Johnson Publishing Co. to equity firm Clear View Group in 2016.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment combx paywall__content\"><strong>Bridgeman, who became a fast-food restaurant franchisee after retiring from the NBA in 1987, said at the time of his purchase of Ebony that the publication would remain largely digital. Bridgeman said she is \u201ccharged with creating the vision and activating the strategy for these iconic brands as she steers them into the 21st century.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"content__segment combx paywall__content\"><strong>Ghee has 25 years of experience in the media and entertainment industries, including stints with companies such as WME, CNN, A&amp;E, The History Channel and BET Networks, where she created and ran the first and only network for Black women: BETHer. Ad-funded journalism has <u><a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fipp.com\/news\/ad-funded-journalism-thing-past\/#\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sharply declined<\/a><\/u>. Digital subscriber bases for newspapers and magazines have proved hard to increase. And that\u2019s not to mention the COVID-19 pandemic, which has crushed fledgling print and digital outfits.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>And yet Michele Ghee, who\u2019s been tapped to relaunch iconic Black magazines Ebony and Jet, said she\u2019s up for the challenge. She is taking over as chief executive after the publications\u2019 purchase out of bankruptcy by former NBA player Ulysses \u201cJunior\u201d Bridgeman and his family.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThis is personal for me,\u201d Ghee said in an exclusive interview days before the sale was to be finalized this week. Johnson, Ebony magazine was one of the leading publications known for chronicling all facets of Black American life. Along with its sister publication, Jet, which was founded six years later, these periodicals have archives that reflect Black and American history, offering a counterweight to mainstream media\u2019s persistent erasure and marginalization of communities of color.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Take, for example, the now infamous photo of Emmett Till\u2019s mutilated body, taken by a Jet magazine staff photographer. It was the magazine\u2019s Sept. 15, 1955, cover, but white publications refused to print it. Or Moneta Sleet Jr.\u2019s Pulitzer-winning image of Coretta Scott King holding her daughter Bernice in a front-row pew at Martin Luther King Jr.\u2019s funeral. Sleet was a longtime staffer at Ebony.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond chronicling the tragedies and traumas that Black people experienced, Ebony and Jet \u2014 in the same ways Essence, Vibe and others would later \u2014 also documented the community\u2019s joys and triumphs. For many, Ebony and Jet were early sites of possibility, tools that they could use to access potential ways of being beyond readers\u2019 immediate environment and circumstances. Ramsey, curator of the Instagram page <a class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/blackmagcovers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@blackmagcovers<\/a>, an ode to iconic magazine covers featuring Black folks. \u201cFor many years, Ebony and Jet were the only outlets where Black life was reported on seriously, or covered at all.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>They were a connective tissue of sorts, he said, for a nationally dispersed Black community \u2014 so much so that most Black people of a certain age can recall thumbing through the pages at the barbershop or beauty salon. Like pictures of King, Malcolm X and Black Jesus hanging on the walls, Ebony and Jet were commonplace decor in Black homes across the country.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Times have changed, though. As the broader media industry experienced its shifts, Ebony and Jet, and similar outlets deemed \u201cniche,\u201d struggled. Jet ceased print production in June 2014. Two years later, Johnson Publishing sold both publications, save the photo archive, to private equity firm Clear View Group. Under new ownership, woes continued as unpaid freelancers sued Ebony, and the publication ended its print operation in 2019. Although Bridgeman\u2019s $14-million purchase of the titles marks a potential revival of these legacy outfits, they are at once burdened by and resting on their history as they chart a new future.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThose publications came out of a specific vision and worked for a specific time,\u201d Ramsey said. \u201cIt\u2019ll take someone with John Johnson\u2019s business acumen, his understanding of Black communities and his commitment to quality journalism to make Ebony and Jet work again. As a sales executive with more than 20 years of experience spearheading teams at BET and CNN, among others, she acknowledged that the landscape has changed from when Johnson founded the publications. Print is largely withering and digital publishing is a game of impressions. She\u2019s also aware that a successful media brand in 2021, especially a Black one, must rise to meet a moment of sociopolitical unrest and accountability. That means she must first lead the healing of wounds that Ebony and Jet created for the small staff struggling to keep its web pages alive and the dozens of writers and other freelancers whose invoices went unpaid.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI might not be able to make everyone whole,\u201d she said, \u201cbut I can make them healthy, and I am committed to that.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The vision for Ebony and Jet, fashioned in close collaboration with Bridgeman\u2019s daughter, Eden Bridgeman, who has taken the lead representing the family, can be summarized in a few words that all start with the letter B: Black, bold, brilliant and beloved. While some presence in print has not been ruled out, most efforts will be concentrated on the digital audience, with an emphasis on reporting, commentary and video. From Blavity and TheGrio to the Medium publications Zora and Level \u2014 not to mention blogs like the Shade Room and LoveBScott \u2014 a host of outlets cover Black communities. They all serve as rebukes of a media ecosystem that largely didn\u2019t make meaningful efforts to elevate Black voices and narratives until the aftermath of the George Floyd and Breonna Taylor killings and the resulting uprisings last summer. To Ghee, there\u2019s a place for them all.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But her mission is clear, with an eye at the mainstream outlets who\u2019ve often placed restrictions on its Black writers and talent in terms of how they can tell Black stories, the mass media whose impressions bank on Black culture for viability without necessarily giving back to Black communities.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI want my people back,\u201d Ghee said, \u201cand we\u2019re going to do what it takes to get them.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO IS JUNIOR BRIDGEMAN<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>During the off-seasons of his playing career, Bridgeman worked and learned the business model of <a title=\"Wendy's\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wendy%27s\">Wendy&#8217;s<\/a> fast food restaurant franchise. After retiring from the NBA, he invested in the franchise and eventually owned over 100 various Wendy&#8217;s and <a title=\"Chili's\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chili%27s\">Chili&#8217;s<\/a> restaurants, before selling in 2016.\u00a0 As President and CEO of Bridgeman Foods Inc, in 2017, Bridgeman became a bottler for <a title=\"The Coca-Cola Company\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Coca-Cola_Company\">The Coca-Cola Company<\/a>, and in 2018, he signed a letter of intent to buy bottling operations in <a title=\"Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Canada\">Canada<\/a>.\u00a0 <sup id=\"cite_ref-Coca-Cola_11-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> In December 2020, Bridgeman, via Bridgeman Sports and Media, bought <i><a title=\"Ebony (magazine)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ebony_(magazine)\">Ebony<\/a><\/i> for $14 million after the magazine had declared <a title=\"Bankruptcy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bankruptcy\">bankruptcy<\/a> earlier in the year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span id=\"Personal\" class=\"mw-headline\">Personal<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Bridgeman is a member of <a title=\"Alpha Phi Alpha\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Alpha_Phi_Alpha\">Alpha Phi Alpha<\/a> fraternity.<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2008, the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"PGA of America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PGA_of_America\">PGA of America<\/a> appointed Bridgeman to serve on the PGA Board of Directors.<sup id=\"cite_ref-14\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naismith_Basketball_Hall_of_Fame\">Naismith Basketball Hall of Fame<\/a> appointed Bridgeman to the board of governors in 2010.<sup id=\"cite_ref-15\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Churchill Downs Inc. appointed Bridgeman to the Company&#8217;s board of directors in 2012.<sup id=\"cite_ref-16\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2016-2017 Bridgeman was appointed and served on the University of Louisville Board of Trustees.<sup id=\"cite_ref-17\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bridgeman is also a key member of the <a title=\"Simmons College of Kentucky\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Simmons_College_of_Kentucky\">Simmons College of Kentucky<\/a> Board of Trustees.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bridgeman is a member of the Louisville <a title=\"Megachurch\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Megachurch\">megachurch<\/a> <a title=\"Southeast Christian Church (Louisville, Kentucky)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southeast_Christian_Church_(Louisville,_Kentucky)\">Southeast Christian Church<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2016, <i><a title=\"Forbes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forbes\">Forbes<\/a><\/i> ranked Bridgeman the fourth-wealthiest retired athlete in the world behind only <a title=\"Michael Jordan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Michael_Jordan\">Michael Jordan<\/a>, <a title=\"David Beckham\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Beckham\">David Beckham<\/a> and <a title=\"Arnold Palmer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arnold_Palmer\">Arnold Palmer<\/a> with an estimated income of $32 million.<sup id=\"cite_ref-21\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span id=\"Honors\" class=\"mw-headline\">Honors<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Bridgeman&#8217;s no. 2 jersey was retired by the <a title=\"Milwaukee Bucks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Milwaukee_Bucks\">Milwaukee Bucks<\/a> in 1988.<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong>In 1999, Bridgeman was inducted into the <a title=\"Wisconsin Athletic Hall of
