His professional golf accomplishments include an ongoing streak of five consecutive PGA Tour playoff appearances and a current world ranking of 135. His charitable efforts through the HV3 Foundation seeks to give back to less fortunate children through increased access and opportunity in the game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p><strong>Through this partnership, CCNC is now his official home club in the Pinehurst area, as he resides in Charlotte, which he will promote as such along with occasional assistance and appearances with our junior program, charitable efforts, and championships, Beddow said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"subscriber-only\">\n<p><strong>&#8220;Harold represents himself, the game, and the state of North Carolina very well, and we are proud to have our club and brand associated with his,&#8221; Beddow said. &#8220;I hope this is just the beginning of a long-lasting relationship and look forward to seeing him around the club.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO IS HAROLD VARNER<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Harold Varner III (born August 15, 1990) is an American <a title=\"Professional golfer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Professional_golfer\">professional golfer<\/a> who plays on the PGA Tour. Despite his smaller stature, Varner is one of the longer drivers on tour. Varner is one of just a handful of African-American professional golfers. He won the <a title=\"Australian PGA Championship\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australian_PGA_Championship\">Australian PGA Championship<\/a> in December 2016.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Varner was born in <a title=\"Akron, Ohio\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Akron,_Ohio\">Akron, Ohio<\/a>, but raised in <a title=\"Gastonia, North Carolina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Gastonia,_North_Carolina\">Gastonia, North Carolina<\/a> where he played golf at Forestview High School. Prior to playing on the Web.com Tour, he played on the eGolf Tour and Florida Tour. His best finish was T-2 at the <a title=\"Rex Hospital Open\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rex_Hospital_Open\">Rex Hospital Open<\/a>. He finished 30th on the money list in his first full season. He finished 25th on the Web.com Tour regular season money list, the last guaranteed spot, to earn a PGA Tour card for the 2015\u201316 season. It was the 27-year-old\u2019s first top-10 finish in nearly a year, and yet most of the attention from non-hard-core golf fans wasn\u2019t on him winning $331,375.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The internet was raving about his shoes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>While sinking seven birdies during the final round at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida, Varner was rocking a pair of white Air Jordan 3s, catching the eye of sneakerheads across the country who probably don\u2019t watch non-major championships or tune out when Tiger Woods isn\u2019t on the course.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>What the photos being shared across social media didn\u2019t show was that Varner also wore Jordan Brand polo shirts and hats, requirements of a billion-dollar brand\u2019s endorsement deal. He\u2019s Jordan Brand\u2019s second golf signee, and Varner is signed to the company\u2019s \u201chead-to-toe\u201d endorsement contract (meaning he\u2019s 100 percent decked out in the company\u2019s apparel), making him the conduit for Michael Jordan\u2019s foray into golf, something that wasn\u2019t imaginable for Varner just a year ago.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In summer 2015, Varner played in the HoopTee Celebrity Golf Classic, the brainchild of Fred Whitfield, president and vice chairman of the Jordan-owned Charlotte Hornets and a former executive with Jordan Brand. Whitfield, who like Varner is from North Carolina, had noticed the younger golfer while watching the Wells Fargo Championship and Wyndham Championship during the 2014 and 2016 PGA tours. The pair kept in contact over the next three years \u2014 Varner spoke at Whitfield\u2019s Achievements Unlimited Basketball School in July, while Whitfield hooks Varner up with courtside seats to Hornets games every now and then \u2014 until after the Wyndham Championship in August 2017. Whitfield knew that Jordan Brand was looking to expand out of just the NBA (hip-hop artist Drake has been collaborating with the shoemaker since 2014), and he believed Varner would be the perfect fit for that new frontier.<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside id=\"boxout-130696\" class=\"espn-boxout\"><\/aside>\n<p><strong> 2014, Keegan Bradley was the first golfer to sign with Jordan Brand.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHarold\u2019s got the DNA of what a Jordan Brand athlete epitomizes. He\u2019s a hard worker,\u201d Whitfield said. \u201cThat\u2019s really why I mentioned it to Michael, because I thought he was unique and I thought that if he ever got hot out on the tour and could start to win out there, he\u2019d be a great young man to have in the brand as an ambassador to really continue to grow the Jordan Brand halo outside of just basketball players.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jordan, whom Varner calls \u201cMJ\u201d on every reference, eventually texted that he was looking to expand more into golf after establishing Team Jordan in professional football (Randy Moss), basketball (Russell Westbrook, Maya Moore), boxing (Roy Jones Jr.) and baseball (Derek Jeter). He wanted to bring Varner, who had recently won the Australian PGA Championship, aboard and asked if he was interested in joining the team. \u201cI would love to,\u201d Varner told him. \u201cThat would be an honor.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He contacted the Jordan Brand team in October 2017 to iron out the details, and in January became an official Team Jordan athlete. In late October, Varner met Jordan in the owners box during halftime of a Hornets home game against the Houston Rockets. They spoke for about 10 minutes, with Jordan offering advice and his support, and also that infamous Jordan competitiveness.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Jordan, who has been playing golf since his junior year at North Carolina, told Varner that if he gave him a seven-shot head start, he could take him. \u201cWell, let\u2019s start off with five and see what happens,\u201d he told his future boss, aka the guy who once gave teammate Steve Kerr a black eye for talking trash in practice.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Being the front face of the shoe empire that <em>the <\/em>Michael Jordan built doesn\u2019t appear to faze Varner. He doesn\u2019t see the endorsement as \u201cthat big of a deal.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s cool that I\u2019m wearing Jordan clothes,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it wasn\u2019t like MJ came to Charlotte and was like, \u2018Hey, I want you to wear Jordan Brand.\u2019 \u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He does concede that moving on from his two-year deal with Oxford, which sponsors reigning Valero Texas Open winner Andrew Landry, to sign with Nike\u2019s nearly-as-famous subsidiary division was a no-brainer. \u201cIt was a great opportunity for me to wear Jordan. He\u2019s shipped nearly every pair of Jordan shoes that the company produces, including his all-time favorite: \u201cWithout hesitation\u201d the Air Jordan 3, he says of the shoe originally released in 1988 and the pair <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?time_continue=55&amp;v=d8CO5y-Xl1A\">Jordan said were his second-favorite<\/a> of his world-famous collection. Varner is also a fan of the low-cut Air Jordan 11 and the more casual \u201cElite\u201d and \u201cFirst Class\u201d series of Jordan shoes that are separate from the numbered Air Jordan collection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If Varner could design his own custom pair of the Air Jordan 3 (despite the heaviness of some of the earlier Air Jordan designs, Varner said his golf cleats are \u201clighter than they look\u201d), he would make them blue. When asked if they\u2019d be \u201cCarolina Blue\u201d like the boss\u2019 alma mater, the East Carolina University graduate responded, \u201cNo. Hell, no. But I didn\u2019t really have an option since MJ went to Carolina, so I have to represent it a little bit, which is a bummer.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Playing in Air Jordan sneakers, especially white ones like Varner\u2019s \u2014 he also wore a pair of black Air Jordan 3s during Round 3 of the Players Championship \u2014 on anything other than a hardwood surface leaves them susceptible to being scuffed or damaged. It brings to mind the scene from <em>Do the Right Thing<\/em> when an unsuspecting white man (clad in a Larry Bird T-shirt) scuffs Buggin Out\u2019s \u201cCement\u201d Air Jordan 4s. \u201cOne-hundred and eight, with tax!\u201d one character exclaims about the price of the now-worthless kicks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Varner understands that his kicks may not stay clean on a golf course, an occupational hazard in his eyes. \u201cThey\u2019re going to get dirty, especially the way I\u2019m hitting it sometimes.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>During his seventh-place finish on May 13, Varner finished 1 stroke ahead of Woods.
