A six-time <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NBA All-Star\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_All-Star\">All-Star<\/a> and two-time member of the <a title=\"All-NBA Team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/All-NBA_Team\">All-NBA Team<\/a>, he won an <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NBA championship\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_championship\">NBA championship<\/a> with the Cavaliers in 2016.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Irving was born in <a title=\"Melbourne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melbourne\">Melbourne<\/a>, Australia, on March 23, 1992, the son of Drederick and Elizabeth Irving, American expats, and the stepson of Shetellia Irving. He has an older sister, Asia, and a younger sister, London. His father, Drederick, played college basketball at <a title=\"Boston University Terriers men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_University_Terriers_men%27s_basketball\">Boston University<\/a> alongside Shawn Teague and under coach <a title=\"Rick Pitino\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Pitino\">Rick Pitino<\/a>. After completing his college career, Irving&#8217;s father moved to Australia to play professionally for the Bulleen Boomers in the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"SEABL\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/SEABL\">SEABL<\/a>. Irving lived in the Melbourne suburb of <a title=\"Kew, Victoria\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kew,_Victoria\">Kew<\/a> before relocating to the United States when he was two years old.<sup id=\"cite_ref-usab_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He holds <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Dual citizenship\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dual_citizenship\">dual<\/a> <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"US citizen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/US_citizen\">American<\/a> and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Australian citizen\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Australian_citizen\">Australian citizenship<\/a>. His mother, who was half <a title=\"Sioux\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sioux\">Sioux<\/a>, died of an illness when he was four, and Drederick raised him along with the help of Irving&#8217;s aunts.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Irving grew up in <a title=\"West Orange, New Jersey\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/West_Orange,_New_Jersey\">West Orange, New Jersey<\/a>, where he frequently attended his father&#8217;s adult-league games. His inspiration to play in the NBA came after playing at <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Continental Airlines Arena\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Continental_Airlines_Arena\">Continental Airlines Arena<\/a> during a school trip in fourth grade, when he declared, &#8220;I will play in the NBA, I promise.&#8221; Due to his father&#8217;s connection to <a title=\"Boston University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_University\">Boston University<\/a>, Irving spent a lot of time in Boston, including at BU&#8217;s basketball skills camp. His signature sneakers were the second best-selling line of 2017, behind <a title=\"LeBron James\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/LeBron_James\">LeBron James<\/a>&#8216;. The <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NPD Group\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NPD_Group\">NPD Group<\/a> no longer tracks signature sneakers but projected that the trend continued into 2018. Azurie&#8217;s middle name, Elizabeth, was given to her in honor of Irving&#8217;s late mother.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In May 2011, Irving made a promise to his father to finish his <a title=\"Bachelor's degree\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bachelor%27s_degree\">bachelor&#8217;s degree<\/a> at Duke within five years. However, in 2016, having not achieved his degree, he claimed he was putting his plans on hold, stating, &#8220;when I leave the game of basketball, then I&#8217;ll focus on the next step of my life&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-145\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> In 2015, he launched his PSD Underwear collection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In November 2016, Irving tweeted his support for the <a title=\"Dakota Access Pipeline protests\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dakota_Access_Pipeline_protests\">water protectors<\/a> at the <a title=\"Standing Rock Indian Reservation\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Standing_Rock_Indian_Reservation\">Standing Rock Indian Reservation<\/a> who were demonstrating against the <a title=\"Dakota Access Pipeline\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dakota_Access_Pipeline\">Dakota Access Pipeline<\/a> in North Dakota. Protesters say the pipeline, which crosses under the river and across the region&#8217;s aquifer, violates treaty law and sacred burial grounds on the land at Standing Rock; there is urgent concern that the crude oil passing through the pipeline threatens the safety of the drinking the water supply of not only the Standing Rock community, but that of many surrounding communities, both Native and non-Native. In August 2018, Irving and his older sister were honored with a &#8220;welcome home&#8221; ceremony at Standing Rock, acknowledging their family ties to the community. Irving&#8217;s mother was a member of the tribe and lived on the reservation until her adoption at a young age.
