Fields made the announcement on Twitter<\/a>, writing, “My path to The Ohio State University was not a direct one, but I could not have asked for a better final destination.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fields played his freshman season at Georgia before transferring to Ohio State in January 2019. Soon after, he received a waiver to be immediately eligible for the 2019 season, in which he put up record-setting numbers for the Big Ten champion Buckeyes and was a finalist for the Heisman Trophy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fields in 2019 became the first Big Ten player with 40 passing touchdowns and 10 rushing touchdowns in a season, earning the league’s Offensive Player of the Year award. He led the nation in touchdown-to-interception ratio (41-3) and won MVP honors in the Big Ten championship game against Wisconsin.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Behind Fields, Ohio State won two Big Ten titles and made consecutive CFP appearances for the first time, falling to Clemson and Lawrence in the 2019 semifinals before beating Clemson this year and falling to Alabama in the national title game Jan. 11. Fields played through an injury to his throwing thumb in the Big Ten championship game and a massive hit to his rib area in the semifinal win over Clemson.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fields, 21, was ESPN’s No. 1 overall recruit in the 2018 class, one spot ahead of Lawrence, a fellow Georgia native. He played sparingly behind Jake Fromm during the 2018 season at Georgia, passing for 328 yards and four touchdowns.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In two seasons at Ohio State, Fields completed 68.4% of his passes for 5,373 yards and 63 touchdowns. He also rushed for 867 yards and 15 scores. He started his college career at Georgia as a freshman before transferring to Ohio State.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fields could have returned for his senior season, but his decision to make the jump to the NFL couldn’t come at a better time. Multiple teams in the draft could use a new quarterback, and Fields is one of the best.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fields attended Harrison High School<\/a> in Kennesaw, Georgia<\/a>. In two years as the starting quarterback for Harrison, he totaled 4,187 passing yards, 41 passing touchdowns, 2,096 rushing yards and 28 rushing touchdowns.<\/sup> In the summer before his senior year in 2017, he attended the Elite 11<\/a> quarterback competition and was named MVP of the event. Late in his senior year, in a game that was nationally televised on ESPN, he suffered a broken finger that required season ending surgery. After his senior season, he was named Mr. Georgia Football by the Touchdown Club of Atlanta, as well as first-team all-state. In addition to football, Fields was also a standout baseball player for Harrison High.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fields was rated as a five-star recruit and was the highest rated dual-threat quarterback<\/a> in the class of 2018 by ESPN<\/a>, Rivals.com<\/a>, and 247Sports.com<\/a>.<\/sup> ESPN listed him as the top recruit overall, while Rivals and 247Sports ranked him second behind pro-style quarterback Trevor Lawrence<\/a>. He was the second highest rated recruit overall in the 247Sports Composite, which aggregates the ratings of the major recruiting services.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On October 6, 2017, Fields committed to the University of Georgia<\/a> to play college football after withdrawing a previous commitment to Penn State<\/a>.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n

College career<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n

Georgia<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

In his true freshman season at Georgia in 2018, Fields served as the backup to starting quarterback Jake Fromm<\/a>. In Georgia’s season opener against Austin Peay<\/a>, Fields made his debut in the second quarter and started the second half. He completed seven of eight passes on the day, including a 10-yard touchdown pass to Isaac Nauta<\/a> in the 45\u20130 victory. On September 29, against Tennessee<\/a>, he had five carries for 45 rushing yards and two rushing touchdowns in the 38\u201312 victory.<\/sup> In a late-season 66\u201327 rout of UMass<\/a>, Fields threw two touchdowns passes and ran for another on the ground, finishing with 121 passing yards and 100 rushing yards.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the 2018 season, Fields saw action in 12 games, totaling 328 passing yards, four passing touchdowns, 266 rushing yards, and four rushing touchdowns.<\/sup> Following Georgia’s loss to Alabama<\/a> in the 2018 SEC Championship Game<\/a>, Fields announced his intent to transfer to Ohio State<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Fields, who would normally be required to sit out for one year due to NCAA transfer rules, sought a waiver to be able to play immediately for Ohio State. Fields enlisted the help of attorney Thomas Mars, who helped secure immediate eligibility for several transfers from Ole Miss<\/a> in 2018, including quarterback Shea Patterson<\/a>. Mars and Fields argued that Fields should be granted a waiver for immediate eligibility due to an NCAA guideline that waives the waiting period for athletes with “documented mitigating circumstances that are outside the student-athlete\u2019s control and directly impact the health, safety and well-being of the student-athlete.” Fields was subject to an incident at Georgia in which a Bulldogs baseball player used a racial slur against Fields. This was believed to be the main incident constituting Fields’ claim of “mitigating circumstances”, although the full contents of the waiver request were never made public. On February 8, 2019, Fields was granted immediate eligibility for the 2019 season by the NCAA.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n

Fields recorded a successful season with the Buckeyes, where he finished third in Heisman Trophy<\/a> voting. He finished with 3,273 passing yards, 41 passing touchdowns, and three interceptions to go along with 484 rushing yards and ten rushing touchdowns. He helped lead the Buckeyes to a Big Ten Championship<\/a> with a 34\u201321 victory over Wisconsin<\/a> and a spot in the College Football Playoff<\/a>.[21]<\/a><\/sup> In the 2019 Fiesta Bowl<\/a> against Clemson<\/a>, he had 320 passing yards, one touchdown, and two interceptions in the 29\u201323 loss in the College Football Playoff semifinal.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n
