Former USF\/Texas\/Louisville coach Charlie Strong will join Urban Meyer\u2019s Jacksonville Jaguars staff, likely as ASSISTANT HEAD COACH\/LB coach.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n

Strong most recently served as a defensive analyst for the National Championship-winning Alabama Crimson Tide<\/a> in 2020, working at Alabama with Nick Saban.<\/strong><\/p>\n

An Urban Meyer Previous Defensive Co-ordinator,, Strong coached under Meyer at Florida from 2005 through 2009, before Strong eventually took the head coaching job at Louisville. Florida was not the first time Strong and Meyer worked together, however, as both were on Notre Dame<\/a>\u2019s staff from 1996 through 1998. While Meyer stayed with the Irish as wide receivers coach through the 2000 season, Strong took a job for as South Carolina\u2019s defensive coordinator in 1999.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Going back to his time at Florida, Strong was actually on the Gators\u2019 staff prior to Meyer\u2019s arrival in 2005. Strong worked as defensive coordinator\/defensive ends coach under Ron Zook in 2003, as well as interim head coach after Zook was fired during the 2004 season. Once Meyer took over in 2005, Strong then served as assistant head coach, linebackers coach and co-defensive coordinator with Greg Mattison from 2005 through 2007. When Mattison left for the Baltimore Ravens<\/a> in 2008, Strong was promoted to sole defensive coordinator, while still coaching the linebackers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Similarly to Meyer, Strong has no NFL coaching experience, but also similar to Meyer, he has a wealth of experience as a college head coach. Strong served as head coach for the Louisville Cardinals<\/a> from 2010 through 2013. He was then hired as the head coach for the Texas Longhorns<\/a> in 2014, until he was fired from that post in November 2016. Strong got another opportunity to lead a program, though, as South Florida hired him as head coach in December 2016. Strong was then fired from USF after the 2019 season. Overall, Strong has a career record of 74-53 as a head coach in the college ranks, going 4-4 in bowl games.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Strong has strong ties (no pun intended) to the Florida Gators<\/a>. Prior to returning to Gainesville in the 2000s, Strong actually got his coaching start at Florida as a graduate assistant in 1983 under Charley Pell, and then had another stint with the Gators coaching defensive ends from 1991 through 1993, and then serving as assistant head coach\/defensive tackles coach under Steve Spurrier in 1994.<\/strong><\/p>\n

From there, Strong took over as defensive line coach for Notre Dame in 1995, where he would eventually cross paths with Meyer. As mentioned, Strong took a job with the South Carolina Gamecocks<\/a> as defensive coordinator in 1999. He served that role through the 2002 season, before of course heading back to Florida.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to the aforementioned stops, Strong has also coached at Ole Miss<\/a>, Texas A&M<\/a> and Southern Illinois. In addition to his roles as head coach or defensive coordinator, Strong has coached wide receivers, linebackers and defensive line.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Twice named Big East Coach of the Year while at Louisville, Strong was also a vital part of two national championships as defensive coordinator at the University of Florida. At USF, he led his third program after previous head coaching stints at the University of Texas (2014-16) and the University of Louisville (2010-13). \u00a0Strong\u2019s appointment at USF returned him to the state of Florida, where he has spent 17 of his 36 seasons as a collegiate coach.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Established as a charismatic leader, detailed strategist and developer of talent, Strong experienced great success as a defensive coordinator in the SEC for 11 seasons, including assisting Urban Meyer in winning national championships at the University of Florida in 2006 and 2008. Since 1995, Strong has coached 15 players selected in the first round of the NFL Draft and had 38 drafted in the first four rounds, while coaching in seven bowl games (4-3) and posting\u00a0three 10-pus win seasons as a head coach.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Charlie Rene Strong (born August 2, 1960) is an American football<\/a> defensive analyst and former player and coach. Strong is currently a defensive analyst for Alabama. Prior to that he was most recently the head coach at the University of South Florida<\/a>. He held numerous assistant coaching positions before becoming head coach at the University of Louisville<\/a> in 2010<\/a>. During his four-year stint at Louisville, he led the Cardinals to a 37\u201315 record and reached a bowl game<\/a> each season, including the 2013 Sugar Bowl<\/a>. After the 2013 season he left Louisville to become the head coach at the University of Texas<\/a>. He had a 16\u201321 record in three seasons. One month after leaving Texas, Strong was hired at South Florida where he led the Bulls to a 21-16 record.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Charlie Rene Strong was born in Batesville, Arkansas<\/a>, one of six children of mother Delois Ramsey. Strong’s father, also named Charles Strong, was a teacher and coach in Luxora, Arkansas<\/a> and never married Ramsey. The younger Strong grew up in a blended household<\/a> with his aunt and aunt’s six children.<\/sup> After lettering<\/a> for four years (1980\u20131983) as a defensive back<\/a> at the University of Central Arkansas<\/a>, Strong joined the University of Florida<\/a> coaching staff as a graduate assistant<\/a> in 1983. He later served as a graduate assistant at Texas A&M<\/a> in 1985. He received a master’s degree<\/a> from Henderson State University <\/a>and also received a master’s degree and education specialist degree from the University of Florida. He is a member of Phi Beta Sigma<\/a> fraternity.<\/strong><\/p>\n
