They say every golf tournament has one winner and a whole bunch of losers. Whoever said that has clearly never watched Tiger Woods play golf with his son.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t think words can describe it,\u201d Woods said. \u201cThe fact that we were able to have this experience together, Charlie and I. It\u2019s memories for a lifetime.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

On Sunday, Team Woods shot a second-straight 62 to finish the PNC Championship at 20 under, seventh place overall, five shots behind their buddies, Justin and Mike Thomas, who closed with 57 for a one-shot victory. Had the Woodses holed a few more putts on their front nine, perhaps they could have made a run for the title. They made too many pars, and pars simply don\u2019t cut it in a scramble format.<\/strong><\/p>\n

But who cares? This week was never about a trophy. Tiger has plenty of those; he only has one son. This was about making sure Charlie had the time of his life playing alongside his dad. The actual golf\u2014that part was extra.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Extra, and spectacular. The younger Woods impressed throughout the week, from his first striped tee shot in Thursday\u2019s pro-am round to the one on the 18th tee on Sunday. He made the first eagle of his life on Saturday, a moment he\u2019ll never forget. A day later, after pouring in a 10-footer, he unleashed a fist pump straight out of pop\u2019s playbook. A moment we\u2019ll never forget<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201c[He] made a good putt there,\u201d Tiger said. \u201cHis tee shot, my ball hit the flag and it was just an uphill putt. Poured it right in the middle.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

A day after setting the Internet on fire with a front-nine 28, Team Woods got off to a slow start Sunday playing alongside David Duval and his son, Brady. Woods and his old rival enjoyed catching up some two decades after they wrestled each other at the summit of the sport.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe played the World Cup down in Argentina, in Japan. Our teamwork. Playing with each other in the Ryder Cup, all our experiences battling each other for number one in the world,\u201d Tiger recalled. \u201cWe were both talking about it\u2014we miss this. To be able to do it together again, take it all in. We haven\u2019t been able to perform like this together in jeez, what, 20 years?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Charlie bear-hugged his dad on the 18th green on Sunday then could not wipe the smile off his face as he walked away from the scorer\u2019s tent, gushing about the Thomases\u2019 round and smiling so brightly you couldn\u2019t help but join him. After congratulating Justin Thomas on his victory, the first thing Charlie told him: \u201cDad and I hit it to 23 feet on 8 \u2026 and three-putted!\u201d He is, after all, his father\u2019s son.<\/strong><\/p>\n

That was the lone bogey of a day that included two eagles, both the product of Charlie\u2019s drives and Tiger\u2019s approaches. For the second straight day, there were a number of holes where Charlie played first, pumped his tee shot down the middle of the fairway, picked up his tee before the ball landed, turned and gave Tiger the \u201cthumbs up,\u201d and Tiger didn\u2019t bother hitting. Dad was proud as hell, every time. Even after the bad shots, which were sparse. Charlie never seemed to notice any of the 200-or-so people watching his every move, nor the bulky TV cameras that were never far from his little face. Not bad for a sixth-grader.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

\u201cCharlie did great,\u201d Tiger said. \u201cIt\u2019s just like being at home at Medalist. Get into your own world. Hit the shot you see and execute.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Notice the way he phrased that: Charlie did great. Not \u201cwe did great.\u201d Tiger lets his son breathe on the golf course, lets him work his way around. Of course, Tiger is there to answer any and all inquiries, but they have to originate from Charlie. Tiger simply will not push him.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ask Tiger any question about his son\u2019s development as a golfer and you\u2019ll get basically the same answer: It\u2019s about making sure he enjoys it. That was the theme of this week. All the philosophical debates over how this event was covered, all the side-by-side swing comparisons\u2014none of that stuff matters to Team Woods. Not this week, and not ever. They\u2019re too busy enjoying themselves.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cGolf is fun,\u201d Tiger said, and you could tell he meant it. Sounds simple enough, but we\u2019re not sure he\u2019d have said the same thing 15 years ago. Or, at least, whether he\u2019d have meant it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why we play. It\u2019s because of enjoyment. And doing it together.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

The sight of Tiger Woods<\/a> wearing his red shirt on the final day of majors<\/a> has long shot fear into the hearts of fellow competitors and electrified golf fans.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

So the sight of both father and son Charlie in matching red shirts and black trousers had on-watchers equally captivated in the PNC Championship over the weekend.<\/strong><\/div>\n
With their matching attire, synchronized golf<\/a> ticks and with Tiger fist-pumping whenever Charlie sunk a putt, Team Woods stole the show at the Ritz-Carlton Golf Club in Orlando, Florida.<\/strong><\/div>\n

While Justin Thomas and his father Mike won the title, Team Woods — who finished seventh among a 20-team field — went back home with “memories we’ll have for our entire lives,” according<\/a> to the 15-time major champion.<\/strong><\/div>\n

When it was created 25 years ago, the PNC Championship was originally started as a father-son competition. Initially, it was meant to feed fans’ desire to see the children of golf’s biggest stars.<\/strong><\/div>\n
It has subsequently developed into any major champions and Players Championship winners competing with a family member.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Thomas’ father is a club professional in Kentucky and his son’s coach, and the world No. 3 called the PNC Championship “100% the most enjoyable” of his career victories.<\/strong><\/div>\n
“A part of you didn’t care who won,” he said<\/a>. “We were here as father and son to enjoy a special moment.”<\/strong><\/div>\n
Charlie often played from tee shots 100 yards ahead of Tiger, with sometimes the 15-time major winner choosing not to hit his drive such was the excellency of his son’s work.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Even with the 250 on course spectators and the TV cameras, Charlie — the youngest competitor in the tournament’s history — was unfazed.<\/strong><\/div>\n
And Alastair Johnston, vice chairman at IMG who helped found the tournament, believes his performance on the biggest stage may have inspired a new generation of players.<\/strong><\/div>\n
“I’d like to find the right way to tell Charlie that thousands of kids watching at home will be inspired to want to play golf with their dads,” Johnston said<\/a>. “He wouldn’t appreciate it now. But one day he might.”<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n
