Johnson&#8217;s Hanneke Schuitemaker, NIH&#8217;s Kizzmekia Corbett an&#8230;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>Dr. Anthony Fauci, the nation&#8217;s top infectious disease expert and a constant presence on TV during the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abcnews.com\/coronavirus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">coronavirus pandemic<\/a>, was asked a blunt question during a forum hosted last week by the National Urban League: &#8220;Can you talk about the input of African American scientists in the vaccine process?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Fauci did not hesitate when giving his answer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The very vaccine that&#8217;s one of the two that has absolutely exquisite levels &#8212; 94 to 95% efficacy against clinical disease and almost 100% efficacy against serious disease that are shown to be clearly safe &#8212; that vaccine was actually developed in my institute&#8217;s vaccine research center by a team of scientists led by Dr. Barney Graham and his close colleague, Dr. Kizzmekia Corbett, or Kizzy Corbett,&#8221; Corbett is part of a team at NIH that worked with Moderna, the pharmaceutical company that developed one of the two mRNA <a id=\"_ap_link_vaccines_Vaccinations_\" href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/alerts\/vaccinations\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">vaccines<\/a> that has shown to be more than 90% effective.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Moderna&#8217;s vaccine is expected to receive emergency use authorization from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration this month.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The other mRNA vaccine, developed by Pfizer, won <a href=\"https:\/\/abcnews.go.com\/Health\/fda-authorizes-1st-covid-19-vaccine-united-states\/story?id=74665712\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">emergency use authorization<\/a> from the FDA on Friday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As of now, the coronavirus has killed nearly 300,000 people and infected more than 15 million people in the U.S.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Even before Corbett took on one of the most challenging tasks of her professional career, she was a force to be reckoned with. But according to a November <a href=\"https:\/\/www.langerresearch.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/SEAN-COVID-19-Survey-Summary_11-27-20.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Axios\/Ipsos poll<\/a>, only 55% of Black Americans said they would take a vaccine if it was proven safe and effected by officials.<\/strong><strong>&#8220;So, the first thing you might want to say to my African American brothers and sisters is that the vaccine that you&#8217;re going to be taking was developed by an African American woman,&#8221; Fauci said. &#8220;And that is just a fact.&#8221;<\/strong><\/section>\n<div class=\"Article__Footer Article__Footer--news\">\n<div class=\"Article__Footer--items flex flex-wrap flex-no-wrap items-center justify-between\">\n<div class=\"StoryDivider StoryDivider--logo\">\n<h1 id=\"firstHeading\" class=\"firstHeading\" lang=\"en\"><strong>WHO IS Kizzmekia Corbett<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><strong>Kizzmekia &#8220;Kizzy&#8221; Shanta Corbett\u00a0 is an American viral <a title=\"Immunology\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Immunology\">immunologist<\/a> at the Vaccine Research Center (VRC) at the <a title=\"National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Institute_of_Allergy_and_Infectious_Diseases\">National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases<\/a>, <a title=\"National Institutes of Health\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Institutes_of_Health\">National Institutes of Health<\/a> (NIAID NIH) based in <a title=\"Bethesda, Maryland\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bethesda,_Maryland\">Bethesda, Maryland<\/a>. Appointed to the VRC in 2014, she is currently the scientific lead of the VRC&#8217;s Coronavirus Team, with research efforts aimed at propelling novel coronavirus vaccines, including a <a title=\"COVID-19 vaccine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/COVID-19_vaccine\">COVID-19 vaccine<\/a>. In December 2020 the Institute&#8217;s Director <a title=\"Anthony Fauci\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Anthony_Fauci\">Anthony Fauci<\/a>, said: &#8220;Kizzy is an African American scientist who is right at the forefront of the development of the vaccine.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Corbett was born in <a title=\"Hurdle Mills, North Carolina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hurdle_Mills,_North_Carolina\">Hurdle Mills, North Carolina<\/a> to Rhonda Brooks. She grew up in <a title=\"Hillsborough, North Carolina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hillsborough,_North_Carolina\">Hillsborough<\/a>, a rural town in <a title=\"North Carolina\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Carolina\">North Carolina<\/a>,<sup id=\"cite_ref-2020-NewsOrangeCounty-COVID_8-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> where she had a large family of step-siblings and foster siblings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Corbett went to Oak Lane Elementary School and A.L. Her fourth grade teacher, Myrtis Bradsher, recalls recognizing Corbett&#8217;s talent at an early age and encouraging Kizzy&#8217;s mother to place her in advanced classes. &#8220;I always thought she is going to do something one day. She dotted i\u2019s and crossed t\u2019s. The best in my 30 years of teaching,&#8221; Bradsher said in a 2020 interview with <i><a title=\"The Washington Post\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Washington_Post\">The Washington Post<\/a><\/i>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_9-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2004, Corbett graduated from <a title=\"Orange High School (North Carolina)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orange_High_School_(North_Carolina)\">Orange High School<\/a> in Hillsborough, North Carolina. At the NIH, Corbett worked on the pathogenesis of <a title=\"Respiratory syncytial virus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Respiratory_syncytial_virus\">respiratory syncytial virus<\/a> as well as on a project focused on innovative vaccine platform advancement.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2014-UNCHealthTalk-QandA_1-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>From 2009 to 2014, Corbett studied human antibody responses to <a title=\"Dengue fever\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dengue_fever\">dengue virus<\/a> in <a title=\"Sri Lanka\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sri_Lanka\">Sri Lankan<\/a> children under the supervision of Aravinda de Silva at <a title=\"University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_North_Carolina_at_Chapel_Hill\">University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill<\/a>. She studied how people produce antibodies in response to dengue fever, and how the genetics of dengue fever impact the severity of a disease. From April to May 2014, as part of her research for her dissertation, Corbett worked as a visiting scholar at Genetech Research Institute in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Colombo, Sri Lanka\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Colombo,_Sri_Lanka\">Colombo, Sri Lanka<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2014-UNCHealthTalk-QandA_1-3\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In October 2014, Corbett became a research fellow, working as a viral immunologist, at the NIH. Her research aims to uncover mechanisms of viral pathogenesis and host immunity. She specifically focuses on development of novel vaccines for <a title=\"Coronaviridae\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coronaviridae\">coronaviridae<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2018-KeystoneSymposia-HongKongU_10-2\" class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Kizzmekia_Corbett#cite_note-2018-KeystoneSymposia-HongKongU-10\">[10]<\/a><\/sup> Her early research considered the development of <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Severe_Acute_Respiratory_Syndrome\">Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome<\/a> (SARS) and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Middle East Respiratory Syndrome\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Middle_East_Respiratory_Syndrome\">Middle East Respiratory Syndrome<\/a> (MERS) vaccine antigens.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2020-TheGrio-COVID_12-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> During this time, she identified a simple way to make spike proteins that are stabilized in a conformation that renders them more immunogenic and manufacturable, in collaboration with researchers at <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Scripps Research Institute\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Scripps_Research_Institute\">Scripps Research Institute<\/a> and Dartmouth College.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At the onset of the <a title=\"COVID-19 pandemic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/COVID-19_pandemic\">COVID-19 pandemic<\/a>, Corbett started working on a vaccine to protect people from <a title=\"Coronavirus disease 2019\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Coronavirus_disease_2019\">coronavirus disease<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2020-BlackEnterprise-COVID_2-4\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Recognizing that the virus was similar to <a title=\"Severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Severe_acute_respiratory_syndrome_coronavirus\">severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus<\/a>, Corbett&#8217;s team utilized previous knowledge of optimal coronavirus S proteins to tackle the novel coronavirus. S proteins form a \u201ccrown\u201d on the surface of coronaviruses and are crucial for engagement of host cell receptors and the initiation of membrane fusion in coronavirus disease. This makes them a particularly vulnerable target for coronavirus prophylactics and therapeutics. Based on her previous research, Corbett&#8217;s team, in collaboration with investigators at UT Austin, transplanted stabilizing mutations from SARS-CoV S protein into SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. She was part of the NIH team who helped solve the <a title=\"Cryogenic electron microscopy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cryogenic_electron_microscopy\">cryogenic electron microscopy<\/a> (CryoEM) structure of the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein. Her prior research suggested that <a title=\"Messenger RNA\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Messenger_RNA\">messenger RNA<\/a> (mRNA) encoding S protein could be used to excite the immune response to produce protective antibodies against coronavirus disease 2019.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To manufacture and test the <a title=\"COVID-19 vaccine\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/COVID-19_vaccine\">COVID-19 vaccine<\/a> Corbett&#8217;s team partnered with <a title=\"Moderna\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Moderna\">Moderna<\/a>, a biotechnology company, to rapidly enter animal studies. Subsequently, the vaccine entered <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Phase 1 clinical testing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Phase_1_clinical_testing\">Phase 1 clinical trial<\/a> only 66 days after the virus sequence was released. The trial, to be completed in at least 45 people, is a dose escalation study in the form of two injections separated by 28 days.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2020-Forbes-1stInjected_19-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Corbett&#8217;s work afforded her the opportunity to be a part of the National Institutes of Health team that welcomed <a title=\"Donald Trump\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Donald_Trump\">Donald Trump<\/a> to the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dale_and_Betty_Bumpers_Vaccine_Research_Center\">Dale and Betty Bumpers Vaccine Research Center<\/a> in March 2020.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Corbett has called for the public to be cautious and respectful of one another during the coronavirus pandemic, explaining that regular hand washing and sneezing into one&#8217;s elbow can help to minimize the spread of the virus.
