(\u201cIt\u2019s an exhibition bout between two former champions,\u201d said a seemingly exasperated Andy Foster, the California State Athletic Commission executive officer. \u201cI don\u2019t know another way to put it.\u201d)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Somehow, Tyson\u2019s being back in the ring is a natural cap to 2020. A documentary series<\/a> in the spring allowed millions to watch Michael Jordan\u2019s Chicago Bulls run it back. The Fresh Prince recently returned to Bel-Air alongside the original Aunt Viv<\/a>. Prince Akeem will soon be coming back to America<\/a> from Zamunda, courtesy of Eddie Murphy.<\/strong><\/p>\n

We reside in an era saturated in nostalgia, rampant with reruns in service of our need for safe, constant pandemic entertainment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Relentless news cycles make it difficult to imagine a hopeful tomorrow. We hug the familiarity of what we know.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On Saturday, he will fight Roy Jones Jr., 51, another once-skilled boxer long past being past his prime. \u201cWhy can\u2019t I do something bigger than me?\u201d Tyson said during a recent telephone call, while acknowledging that he is known to be selfish. \u201cLike I said: \u2018Why do I always have to think about me? Then it was Shannon Briggs, and now it\u2019s Roy Jones. So I don\u2019t know how we got from Mr. Sapp to Roy Jones Jr., but that was the route we went.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The World Boxing Council announced the creation of yet another belt for Saturday night\u2019s bout, the Frontline Battle Belt<\/a>. The main event is scheduled for eight rounds of two minutes each. The night will be presented not by a legacy boxing network but by Triller<\/a>, a social video app that raised money from entertainers<\/a> with the elevator pitch of establishing a U.S.-based TikTok alternative.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Tyson-Jones matchup is the calculated culmination of an evening of spectacle from beginning to end. Rappers including DaBaby, Lil Wayne and French Montana are scheduled to perform live. Ne-Yo will sing the national anthem. There is merchandise on sale.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The event is the first of an envisioned series produced under a new venture called Mike Tyson\u2019s Legends Only League, owned by Tyson and the media executive Sophie Watts\u2019s Eros Innovations, which hopes to feature notable retired athletes from a litany of sports \u2014 Formula One, tennis, basketball \u2014 competing again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt was Mike\u2019s idea to kick off the league with his own fight,\u201d said Watts, adding that she is planning four calendar events in 2021.<\/strong><\/p>\n

During the interview, Tyson imagined other boxers participating in bouts for charity, like Fury, Deontay Wilder, Floyd Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya. \u201cThat would be powerful,\u201d he said. \u201cMy ego would mean nothing. That would do off my ego, if we all got together.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is another act in Tyson\u2019s winding life, with the seniority of someone who perhaps did not envision making it this far. \u201cI know it seems different, me being who I was before and who I\u2019m becoming and trying to become in life, but that\u2019s just what it is,\u201d Tyson said. \u201cI didn\u2019t choose this route. I wasn\u2019t navigating. I\u2019m very grateful to be alive. I learned a lot of gratitude.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tyson\u2019s boxing debut introduced him as \u201cthe hunter, the pressure fighter who will try to push his opponent\u2019s nose bone into his brain, as he once famously said,\u201d Farhood said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A rape conviction and prison stint<\/a> marked a steep downfall. Three decades later, an environment of tolerant silence has changed<\/a> with regard to abuse in the world of sports and entertainment.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cDuring the time when this happened, it was fairly rampant but just underreported\u201d among many famous men in sports, said Miki Turner, a former sports columnist who is an assistant professor at the University of Southern California teaching journalism. She added: \u201cI\u2019m glad that this movement has really emerged and really sort of shaken all the nuts from the trees.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tyson said that until his downfall he was too self-centered. \u201cI didn\u2019t want to be humble. I got humbled. Life beat me into submission,\u201d he said. \u201cI lost my babies<\/a>, I lost people I loved and it just \u2014 I had to get it together and found my head. And it could be me. I could be gone tomorrow or 10 minutes from now. You know what I mean? I\u2019m not no religious freak, man, don\u2019t get me wrong, OK?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
