He worked on his college newspaper, before graduating from art school and driving 3,000 miles to Harlem. He found his first job in publishing working at Andy Warhol\u2019s\u00a0<em>Interview<\/em><em>\u00a0magazine<\/em>, and numerous other publications before founding Harlem World Magazine in 2003. Tisdale served as an active member on Harlem\u2019s Community Board #10 and held numerous sub-committee seats from Arts &amp; Culture to Economic Development and Empowerment Zone, Land Use, and Education. He was appointed to Manhattan Borough President Ruth Messinger\u2019s Youth Committee. Tisdale is an award-winning visual artist and founder of the<a href=\"https:\/\/nvisualartistsguild.wordpress.com\/\"> National Visual Artists Guild (NVAG)<\/a>, the first union for visual ars in the United States and his art studio <a href=\"https:\/\/tisdalestudio.wordpress.com\/\">Tisdale Studio<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-115697\" src=\"https:\/\/www.harlemworldmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/charles-tisdale-jackson-miss-advocate-1.jpg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 494px) 100vw, 494px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.harlemworldmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/charles-tisdale-jackson-miss-advocate-1.jpg 494w, https:\/\/www.harlemworldmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/charles-tisdale-jackson-miss-advocate-1-137x150.jpg 137w, https:\/\/www.harlemworldmagazine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/charles-tisdale-jackson-miss-advocate-1-458x500.jpg 458w\" alt=\"\" width=\"494\" height=\"539\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Tisdale\u2019s Uncle\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.jacksonadvocateonline.com\/page\/2\/?s=charles+tisdale\">Charles Wesley Tisdale<\/a> (left), in the 1970s, became owner and publisher of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.jacksonadvocateonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J<\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/www.jacksonadvocateonline.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ackson Advocate<em>,<\/em><\/a>\u00a0founded in 1938, to create the best content for Jackson, Mississippians.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Charles\u00a0Wesley Tisdale was\u00a0born in rural Athens, Alabama on November 7, 1926, he was one of a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.bjmjr.net\/mcbride\/tisdale.htm\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">family of eighteen children<\/a>. Tisdale always wanted to be a newspaperman and began living that dream early: At age 7, he was working at a newspaper, pouring lead into molds in Linotype machines. An American to is core, his father Thomas Jefferson Tisdale, was a sharecropper. Thereafter, he supported his family through day jobs and yard work. Charles Tisdale remembers his father as a poet and songwriter, an intellectual who read three newspapers every day. Charles Tisdale\u2019s mother, Winnie, was \u201ca stern and courageous woman.\u201d She insisted that her children stand up for their rights. She was a fierce defender of the family who \u201cwould shoot in a minute.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>At fourteen he was foreman of a tobacco field in Connecticut and the cofounder of a local chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He later returned to Athens, where he graduated from Trinity High School. At Trinity High School he was editor of the school paper and excelled in academics and sports. But when he and others tried to organize a chapter of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, he was dragged behind an ox cart by white folks to punish him. In 1950 he received a bachelor\u2019s degree from LeMoyne-Owen College in Memphis, Tennessee, working as an advertising and whiskey salesman while in Memphis. He later earned a master\u2019s degree in economics from the University of Chicago. An adviser for numerous companies, he found his true profession in reporting for the African American press. His byline appeared in the\u00a0<em>Memphis Tri-State Defender<\/em>,\u00a0<em>Memphis World<\/em>,\u00a0<em>New York Amsterdam News<\/em>, and\u00a0<em>Chicago Defender<\/em>. He edited the\u00a0<em>Memphis Times Herald<\/em>\u00a0and the\u00a0<em>Midsouth Times<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI think newspapers that provide information are the most essential tool in a democracy. I always wanted to have my say. This is true liberty, when free men speak freely.\u201d \u2013 <em>Charles Tisdale<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.npr.org\/templates\/story\/story.php?storyId=12144983\">NPR Radio<\/a> reported that \u201cCharles Tisdale was a champion of civil rights, a dedicated journalist who owned the Jackson, Mississippi newspaper called, appropriately enough, the Jackson Advocate. Mr. Tisdale bought the newspaper in 1978. And over the course of almost three decades, he published stories that gave a voice to the less fortunate, bringing to life the impoverished state of some of Mississippi\u2019s majority-black towns and exposing corruption among law enforcement officials.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mr. Tisdale was committed to his community, as Ben Jealous, onetime managing director of the Advocate and NAACP president said about Mr. Tisdale,<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThe biggest gift in understanding what it meant to be committed to something\u2026\u201d \u2013 <em>Ben Jealous<\/em><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>Mr. Tisdale was committed to the people in his\u00a0community, and he was committed to the integrity of his business.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The paper encouraged discourse and critical debate and understood the importance of giving a voice to community ideas in his column\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=Charles+Wesley+Tisdale+biography&amp;oq=Charles+Wesley+Tisdale+biography&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57.4378j0j4&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;es_sm=0&amp;ie=UTF-8#newwindow=1&amp;q=Tisdale%27s+topics\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>Tisdale\u2019s Topics<\/em>.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Activist Charles Evers, brother of slain civil rights leader Medgar Evers, said,<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cTisdale was concerned about the welfare of all citizens, not just blacks.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>For 20 years,\u00a0Mr. Tisdale had a talk show on Evers\u2019 radio station, <a href=\"https:\/\/wmpr901fm.com\/#videos\">WMPR in Jackson<\/a>, where he often took elected leaders to task for not effectively serving their community. He said,<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong>\u201cBefore the Jackson Advocate, there was no coverage for black folks.
