He authored a .262\/.364\/.437 batting line with 11 home runs in 58 games, and led all rookie position players with 1.7 WAR. The Mariners selected Lewis with the No. 11 pick in the 2016 draft.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Through August, Robert was the favorite for the Rookie of the Year award, though an ugly September slump dragged his overall batting line down to .233\/.302\/.436. Robert, 23, slugged 11 home runs and stole nine bases. The 23-year-old Javier had a 3.48 ERA with 54 strikeouts in 54 1\/3 innings this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Brewers reliever Devin Williams <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/news\/mlb-awards-nl-rookie-of-the-year-honors-go-to-brewers-reliever-devin-williams\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">won Rookie of the Year honors in the National League<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lewis is the fourth Mariner to be named Rookie of the Year, joining <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/players\/playerpage\/211807\/ichiro-suzuki\">Ichiro Suzuki<\/a> (2001), Kazuhiro Sasaki (2000), and Alvin Davis (1984). He is the fourth straight position player to win the AL award and the eighth in the last nine years. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/players\/playerpage\/2007003\/michael-fulmer\">Michael Fulmer<\/a> in 2016 is the only exception, though <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/mlb\/players\/playerpage\/2901324\/shohei-ohtani\">Shohei Ohtani<\/a> won as a two-year player in 2018.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As a reminder, voting for all major awards takes places after the regular season and before the postseason. The full 2020 AL Rookie of the Year voting results can be seen at the Baseball Writers&#8217; Association of America&#8217;s website.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Rookie of the Year awards were the first of the major MLB awards to be handed out this week.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>WHO IS KYLE LEWIS<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Kyle Alexander Lewis (born July 13, 1995) is an American professional <a title=\"Baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baseball\">baseball<\/a> <a title=\"Outfielder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Outfielder\">outfielder<\/a> for the <a title=\"Seattle Mariners\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seattle_Mariners\">Seattle Mariners<\/a> of <a title=\"Major League Baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_League_Baseball\">Major League Baseball<\/a> (MLB). Prior to his MLB debut, he played college baseball for the <a title=\"Mercer Bears\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercer_Bears\">Mercer Bears<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For his 2016 performance at Mercer, Lewis was named an All-American, Baseball America&#8217;s 2016 College Player of the Year, and won the 2016 Golden Spikes Award. He was selected in the first round of the <a title=\"2016 Major League Baseball draft\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2016_Major_League_Baseball_draft\">2016 Major League Baseball draft<\/a> by the Seattle Mariners.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span id=\"Amateur_career\" class=\"mw-headline\">Amateur career<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Lewis attended <a title=\"Shiloh High School (Georgia)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Shiloh_High_School_(Georgia)\">Shiloh High School<\/a> in <a title=\"Snellville, Georgia\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Snellville,_Georgia\">Snellville, Georgia<\/a>. He played both baseball and basketball in high school. <sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>He chose baseball over basketball and attended <a title=\"Mercer University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercer_University\">Mercer University<\/a>, where he played college baseball for the <a title=\"Mercer Bears baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mercer_Bears_baseball\">Bears<\/a>. As a freshman in 2014, he appeared in 42 games with 17 starts and hit .281\/.340\/.382 with two <a title=\"Home run\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Home_run\">home runs<\/a> and 17 <a title=\"Run batted in\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Run_batted_in\">runs batted in<\/a> (RBI) over 89 at-bats. After his freshman season he played <a title=\"Collegiate summer baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Collegiate_summer_baseball\">collegiate summer baseball<\/a> in the <a title=\"Cape Cod Baseball League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cape_Cod_Baseball_League\">Cape Cod Baseball League<\/a> for the <a title=\"Cotuit Kettleers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cotuit_Kettleers\">Cotuit Kettleers<\/a>. As a sophomore in 2015, he played in 54 games, hitting .367\/.423\/.677 with 17 home runs and 56 RBI. He was the <a title=\"Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Year\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Southern_Conference_Baseball_Player_of_the_Year\">Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Year<\/a> and was the co-winner of the Gregg Olson Award, bestowed upon college baseball&#8217;s breakout player of the year. After the season, Lewis returned to the Cape Cod Baseball League, playing for the <a title=\"Orleans Firebirds\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orleans_Firebirds\">Orleans Firebirds<\/a>. For his 2015 performance with the Firebirds, Lewis was named a Cape Cod League All-Star.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As a junior at Mercer, he hit .395\/.535\/.731 with 20 home runs and 72 RBI, and was named an <a title=\"2016 College Baseball All-America Team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2016_College_Baseball_All-America_Team\">All-American<\/a> by <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Louisville Slugger\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Louisville_Slugger\">Louisville Slugger<\/a>, <a title=\"Baseball America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baseball_America\">Baseball America<\/a>, the <a title=\"American Baseball Coaches Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/American_Baseball_Coaches_Association\">American Baseball Coaches Association<\/a>, and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Collegiate Baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Collegiate_Baseball\">Collegiate Baseball<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Following that season, Lewis received the 2016 <a title=\"Golden Spikes Award\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Spikes_Award\">Golden Spikes Award<\/a>, which is awarded annually to the best amateur baseball player in the United States. In addition, he was the Southern Conference Baseball Player of the Year for the second straight year and was named both <i><a title=\"Baseball America\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baseball_America\">Baseball America<\/a><\/i><span class=\"nowrap\">&#8216;<\/span>s <a title=\"Baseball America College Player of the Year Award\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Baseball_America_College_Player_of_the_Year_Award\">College Player of the Year<\/a> and the American Baseball Coaches Association&#8217;s Division I National Player of the Year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span id=\"Professional_career\" class=\"mw-headline\">Professional career<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3><strong><span id=\"Minor_Leagues\" class=\"mw-headline\">Minor Leagues<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>The <a title=\"Seattle Mariners\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Seattle_Mariners\">Seattle Mariners<\/a> selected Lewis with the 11th overall pick in the <a title=\"2016 Major League Baseball draft\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2016_Major_League_Baseball_draft\">2016 Major League Baseball draft<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-13\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He made his professional debut with the <a title=\"Everett AquaSox\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Everett_AquaSox\">Everett AquaSox<\/a>. Lewis only played 30 games for the <a title=\"Everett AquaSox\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Everett_AquaSox\">Everett AquaSox<\/a> due to a right ACL injury, batting .299 with three home runs and 26 RBIs. He spent 2017 with both the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"AZL Mariners\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/AZL_Mariners\">AZL Mariners<\/a> and the <a title=\"Modesto Nuts\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Modesto_Nuts\">Modesto Nuts<\/a>, posting a combined .257 average with seven home runs and 31 RBIs in 49 games between both clubs, and 2018 with Modesto and the <a title=\"Arkansas Travelers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arkansas_Travelers\">Arkansas Travelers<\/a>, batting .244 with nine home runs and 52 RBIs in 86 games with the two teams.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Lewis returned to Arkansas for the 2019 season,<sup id=\"cite_ref-17\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> hitting .263\/.343\/.398\/.741 with 11 home runs and 62 RBI over 122 games.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span id=\"Seattle_Mariners\" class=\"mw-headline\">Seattle Mariners<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<h4><strong><span id=\"2019\" class=\"mw-headline\">2019<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>The Mariners selected Lewis&#8217; contract and promoted him to the major leagues on September 10, 2019.<sup id=\"cite_ref-19\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Lewis hit a home run off <a title=\"Trevor Bauer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trevor_Bauer\">Trevor Bauer<\/a> in his major league debut that night versus the <a title=\"Cincinnati Reds\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cincinnati_Reds\">Cincinnati Reds<\/a>. He hit home runs in each of his next two games as well, becoming the second player in history, after <a title=\"Trevor Story\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trevor_Story\">Trevor Story<\/a>, to homer in each of his first three major league games.
