The rosters produced a mix of great highlights and grating reviews.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"bingadsoneclick\" class=\"bingadsoneclick\" data-id=\"66\" data-m=\"{&quot;i&quot;:66,&quot;p&quot;:64,&quot;n&quot;:&quot;bingadsoneclick&quot;,&quot;y&quot;:8,&quot;o&quot;:2}\" data-apikey=\"ARA%2b0ITwqT99rPR8ZUSwQ3UcObPuCgc8mNVYCCuE1gLZq%2fwZyNKZb4%2bEfUBSLJxG%2bBI%3d\" data-pagetype=\"article\">\n<div id=\"msn300x350InArticle1AdBlock\" class=\"msn300x350InArticle1AdBlock bing-native-ad\">\n<div class=\"itemContainer\">\n<div id=\"default2_na-adid-0\" class=\"nativeAd bing-native-ad\">\n<div class=\"na-content\">\n<div><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"na-url\"><strong>So it was with some surprise Saturday morning that Rivers awoke to a text message from a fellow NBA head coach lamenting the end of the Clippers&#8217; season.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I&#8217;ve never had a message like the one I got,&#8221; Rivers said Saturday, less than 12 hours after Golden State eliminated the Clippers in Game 6 of their first-round playoff series. &#8220;He said, &#8216;Last night was my saddest night of the season.&#8217;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;And I&#8217;m like, what the heck?&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If Rivers had become conditioned to criticism following the underachieving &#8220;Lob City&#8221; era, he spent this latest season hearing near-universal praise from peers across the league. A team featuring zero All-Stars won 48 games behind an uncommonly resilient roster that made no apologies for its gritty style. Rivers, who earned consideration for coach of the year, called the season the proudest of his career.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Warriors coach Steve Kerr commended the Clippers&#8217; &#8220;beautiful basketball&#8221; following the series-clinching win at Staples Center. One unnamed playoff coach texted Rivers directly.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;He was like, &#8216;Because I watch you guys play every game and it gave me such basketball enjoyment, not only how hard you played, but the way you played,&#8221; Rivers said. &#8220;I was like, wow, this is impressive.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Just as impressive would be recreating that hard-nosed, tight-knit style next season amid a roster that will doubtless feature several new faces given the team&#8217;s eight free agents. The Clippers can clear enough salary cap room to sign two free agents to maximum contracts this summer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>They hope to transform from a team no one saw making the playoffs into a Western Conference favorite overnight. In the <\/strong>process<strong> they also hope to retain the DNA from this team, with its mix of veterans, including Danilo Gallinari, Patrick Beverley and Lou Williams, and young players such as Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Landry Shamet <\/strong>and<strong> Montrezl Harrell.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Hopefully we changed the culture of the NBA,&#8221; Beverley said. &#8220;It&#8217;s OK to be high maintenance and everything. That doesn&#8217;t mean you have to be. You can be a blue-collar worker and still be successful.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The fact that the identity remained the same despite massive roster turnover at February&#8217;s trade deadline gives Rivers confidence it can be replicated.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-17038\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/austin-rivers-doc-rivers-getty-icon-sportswire-300x194.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"194\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/austin-rivers-doc-rivers-getty-icon-sportswire-300x194.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/austin-rivers-doc-rivers-getty-icon-sportswire.jpg 680w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>&#8220;We have the right culture to build what we want,&#8221; Rivers said. &#8220;That was the test actually, and we passed that test already.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After Boston won the NBA championship in 2008, Rivers stayed in his office rather than bask <\/strong>in<strong> the moment in a victorious locker room, and he has said since that he regrets not savoring the moment more. Within hours, he was at a convenience store grocery shopping for the next morning&#8217;s breakfast. His assumption, he has said, was that more moments like that were coming.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The experience made him appreciate this season more <\/strong>in<strong> the moment.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;I think I enjoyed it a bit more,&#8221; Rivers said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After the Clippers clinched a playoff berth in Minnesota on March 26, he handed a champagne bottle to Gallinari and raised his arms in triumph as the forward, who enjoyed a career-best season, soaked in the locker room.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Said Gallinari: &#8220;You could see that it was a very good moment for everybody from Doc, to the players, to the coaches, to everybody.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Should the Clippers land marquee free agents such as Kawhi Leonard or Kevin Durant (or both), the Clippers&#8217; goal is to hoist champagne bottles in June, not March. Titles are the inarguable standard of a team&#8217;s success and the Clippers want to be in contention as soon as possible. The team also boasts a number of attractive assets for a blockbuster trade should New Orleans&#8217; Anthony Davis be on the market again.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;It&#8217;s going to be a very important summer,&#8221; Gallinari said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But along with banners, Rivers measures his teams&#8217; successes or failures using a different, more personal gauge &#8212; how much he likes to go to work. He often said he &#8220;raced&#8221; to make his commute this season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>It&#8217;s why his drive to the team&#8217;s practice facility Saturday morning was bittersweet.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;When you are knocked out of the playoffs there&#8217;s obviously some times it&#8217;s a relief,&#8221; Rivers said. &#8220;And there are some times you just don&#8217;t want it to happen and last night was one of those points. During his six seasons with the franchise thus far, he has compiled a 307-185 record and made the postseason five times.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"teads-inread sm-screen\">\n<div>\n<div class=\"teads-ui-components-adchoices\">\n<div class=\" card-content \">\n<p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m going nowhere,\u201d Rivers said March 19. \u201cI can tell you that straight and up front. During his first years with the Celtics, he was criticized by many in the media for his coaching style, most vociferously by <a title=\"Bill Simmons\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bill_Simmons\">Bill Simmons<\/a>, who in 2006 publicly called for Rivers to be fired in his columns.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>As a result of the Celtics&#8217; 109\u201393 victory over the <a title=\"New York Knicks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Knicks\">New York Knicks<\/a> on January 21, 2008, Rivers, as the coach of the team with the best winning percentage in the <a title=\"Eastern Conference (NBA)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Eastern_Conference_(NBA)\">Eastern Conference<\/a>, earned the honor to coach the East for the <a title=\"2008 NBA All-Star Game\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2008_NBA_All-Star_Game\">2008 NBA All-Star Game<\/a> in <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"New Orleans Hornets\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans_Hornets\">New Orleans<\/a>. On June 17, 2008, Rivers won his first <a title=\"NBA Finals\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_Finals\">NBA Championship<\/a> as a head coach after defeating the <a title=\"Los Angeles Lakers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles_Lakers\">Los Angeles Lakers<\/a> in six games. <sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> The Celtics needed an NBA record 26 post-season games to win it. Rivers played for the team that held the previous record for most games played in a single post-season: the 1994 New York Knicks played 25 post-season games.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rivers led the Celtics to the <a title=\"2010 NBA Finals\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2010_NBA_Finals\">2010 NBA Finals<\/a> where they once again faced the Los Angeles Lakers and lost the series in seven games.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After deliberating between staying on the job and leaving the job and returning to spend more time with his family in Orlando, Rivers finally decided that he would honor the last year of his contract and return for the 2010\u201311 season.<sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On May 13, 2011, after months of rumors that he would retire, ESPN reported that the Celtics and Rivers agreed upon a 5-year contract extension worth $35 million.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On February 6, 2013, Rivers notched his 400th win with the Celtics in a 99\u201395 victory over the <a title=\"Toronto Raptors\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Toronto_Raptors\">Toronto Raptors<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-9\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rivers is the nephew of former NBA player <a title=\"Jim Brewer (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jim_Brewer_(basketball)\">Jim Brewer<\/a>. He lives in <a title=\"Orlando, Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Orlando,_Florida\">Orlando, Florida<\/a>, with his wife Kristen; they have four children. His oldest son <a title=\"Jeremiah Rivers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jeremiah_Rivers\">Jeremiah<\/a> played basketball at <a title=\"Georgetown Hoyas men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georgetown_Hoyas_men%27s_basketball\">Georgetown University<\/a> and <a title=\"Indiana Hoosiers men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Indiana_Hoosiers_men%27s_basketball\">Indiana University<\/a><\/strong>,<strong> and has played in the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NBA D-League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_D-League\">NBA D-League<\/a> for the <a title=\"Maine Red Claws\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Maine_Red_Claws\">Maine Red Claws<\/a>. His daughter Callie played <a title=\"Florida Gators women's volleyball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Florida_Gators_women%27s_volleyball\">volleyball<\/a> for the <a title=\"University of Florida\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Florida\">University of Florida<\/a><sup id=\"cite_ref-17\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> and then played professionally in Puerto Rico, while his second-born son <a title=\"Austin Rivers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Austin_Rivers\">Austin<\/a> played one year as a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Guard (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guard_(basketball)\">guard<\/a> for <a title=\"Duke Blue Devils men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duke_Blue_Devils_men%27s_basketball\">Duke University<\/a> before being drafted by the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"New Orleans Hornets\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_Orleans_Hornets\">New Orleans Hornets<\/a> with the 10th pick of the <a title=\"2012 NBA draft\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2012_NBA_draft\">2012 NBA draft<\/a>, and joined his father on the Clippers in 2015. His youngest son, Spencer, is a guard who played for Winter Park High School and for <a title=\"UC Irvine Anteaters men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/UC_Irvine_Anteaters_men%27s_basketball\">UC Irvine<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Rivers<strong> is a cousin of former <a title=\"National Basketball Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Basketball_Association\">NBA<\/a> <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Guard (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guard_(basketball)\">guard<\/a> <a title=\"Byron Irvin\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Byron_Irvin\">Byron Irvin<\/a> and former <a title=\"Major League Baseball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_League_Baseball\">MLB<\/a> <a title=\"Outfielder\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Outfielder\">outfielder<\/a> <a title=\"Ken Singleton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ken_Singleton\">Ken Singleton<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-18\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rivers was given his nickname of &#8220;Doc&#8221; by then-<a title=\"Marquette Golden Eagles men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Marquette_Golden_Eagles_men%27s_basketball\">Marquette<\/a> assistant coach <a title=\"Rick Majerus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rick_Majerus\">Rick Majerus<\/a>. Rivers attended a summer basketball camp wearing a <a title=\"Julius Erving\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Julius_Erving\">&#8220;Dr. J&#8221;<\/a> T-shirt. Majerus immediately called him &#8220;Doc&#8221; and the players at camp followed suit. The name has stuck ever since.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rivers is also currently a member of the National Advisory Board for <a title=\"Positive Coaching Alliance\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Positive_Coaching_Alliance\">Positive Coaching Alliance<\/a>, a national non-profit organization that helps student-athletes and their coaches.
