The Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame informed him that he had been elected, as part of the Class of 2019, to join the ranks of the game\u2019s legends.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Upon getting the news that he had been chosen, Attles responded with typical good-natured humility.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThe first thing he said about his selection,\u201d according to his son, Alvin Attles III, \u201cis that everybody makes a mistake.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>That surely was the reaction around much of the sports world when the Warriors shocked the Washington Bullets back in \u201975.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screenname u-inlineBlock u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\"><strong><a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/youngvino1616\"> <span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@youngvino1616<\/span> <\/a><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16922\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/AL-ATT-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/AL-ATT-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/AL-ATT.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>The Bullets (now the Wizards) had three All-Stars \u2013 Elvin Hayes, Wes Unseld, and Phil Chenier. Their 60-22 record tied the Celtics for the best in the league, and they ousted Boston from the Eastern Conference Finals in six games.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Though the Warriors, with Rick Barry as their only All-Star, finished 48-34 that season, they embraced the underdog role and won four games by a combined margin of 16 points.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>That the Warriors won every game by single digits is a reflection of their mental toughness and basketball intellect, two attributes also associated with Attles during his 11-season playing career, providing team owner Franklin Mieuli with sound reasons make Attles a player-coach over his final two seasons before becoming a full-time head coach in 1971.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attles won a title with a roster with players \u2013 rookie Keith (later Jamaal) Wilkes was the No. 2 scorer at 14.2 points per game \u2013 that embodied his characteristics surrounding Barry, who averaged more than 15 points per game.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attles, 82, usually is a fixture at Warriors games, sitting in his personal seat atop the lower bowl at Oracle Arena. In his 59th year with the Warriors in several capacities, he attended a few games earlier this season but has not been on site in recent months while coping with an undisclosed medical condition.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>MORE ON AL ATTLES<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Alvin Austin Attles Jr. (born November 7, 1936) is an American retired professional <a title=\"Basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basketball\">basketball<\/a> player and coach best known for his longtime association with the <a title=\"Golden State Warriors\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_State_Warriors\">Golden State Warriors<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>He is a graduate of <a title=\"Weequahic High School\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Weequahic_High_School\">Weequahic High School<\/a> in <a title=\"Newark, New Jersey\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Newark,_New_Jersey\">Newark, New Jersey<\/a> <\/strong>and<strong> <a title=\"North Carolina A&amp;T State University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Carolina_A%26T_State_University\">North Carolina A&amp;T State University<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He has a bachelor&#8217;s degree in Physical Education and History along with a master&#8217;s degree in Curriculum and Instruction. He intended to return to Newark and coach at his local junior high school when he was drafted by the Warriors. He initially declined before accepting and going to training camp.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16923\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/AL-WAR-270x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"270\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/AL-WAR-270x300.jpg 270w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/04\/AL-WAR.jpg 461w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 270px) 100vw, 270px\" \/>Attles joined the then-Philadelphia Warriors in 1960. On March 2, 1962, he was the team&#8217;s second-leading scorer with 17 points on <a title=\"Wilt Chamberlain's 100-point game\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilt_Chamberlain%27s_100-point_game\">the night Wilt Chamberlain scored 100 points<\/a>. There is a probably apocryphal story to the effect that one of the sportswriters covering the game began his filing with the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Lede (journalism)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lede_(journalism)\">lede<\/a> &#8220;HERSHEY, Pa. &#8212; Wilt Chamberlain and Al Attles combined for 117 points last night as the Philadelphia Warriors defeated the <a title=\"New York Knicks\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Knicks\">New York Knicks<\/a> 169-147.&#8221; Attles moved with the team to the Bay Area at the end of the 1962 season, playing until 1971. Attles was known as &#8220;The Destroyer&#8221; due to his defensive <\/strong>specialities<strong> along with once punching a player in the jaw.<sup id=\"cite_ref-5\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He was a role player on the 1964 Warriors team (with <a title=\"Wilt Chamberlain\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wilt_Chamberlain\">Wilt Chamberlain<\/a> and <a title=\"Guy Rodgers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Guy_Rodgers\">Guy Rodgers<\/a>) that made the <a title=\"NBA Finals\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_Finals\">NBA Finals<\/a> and eventually lost the championship series to the <a title=\"Boston Celtics\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Boston_Celtics\">Boston Celtics<\/a>, four games to one. Attles also played on the Warriors&#8217; 1967 team that lost to Chamberlain&#8217;s 68-13 <a title=\"Philadelphia 76ers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philadelphia_76ers\">Philadelphia 76ers<\/a> in an evenly matched, six-game championship series.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2><strong><span id=\"Coaching_career\" class=\"mw-headline\">Coaching career<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><strong>Attles later became one of the first <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"African-American\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/African-American\">African-American<\/a> coaches in the NBA when he was named player-coach of the Warriors midway through the <a title=\"1969\u201370 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1969%E2%80%9370_NBA_season\">1969\u201370 season<\/a>, succeeding <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"George C. Lee\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_C._Lee\">George Lee<\/a>. The team would make the playoffs only once more for the remainder of his tenure as coach. Attles was replaced by <a title=\"Johnny Bach\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Johnny_Bach\">Johnny Bach<\/a> for the last 21 games of the <a title=\"1979\u201380 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1979%E2%80%9380_NBA_season\">1979\u201380 NBA season<\/a> (a season in which the Warriors finished tied for dead last), though he returned for the next season (Bach would become Attles&#8217; permanent successor after 1983). Attles coached the Warriors until 1983, compiling a 557-518 regular season record (588-548 including playoffs) with six playoff appearances in 14 seasons. During the <a title=\"1983\u201384 NBA season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1983%E2%80%9384_NBA_season\">1983\u201384<\/a> season, Attles worked as the Warriors&#8217; general manager. Bunn Lifetime Achievement Award\u2014an annual basketball award given by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame to an individual who has contributed significantly to the sport of basketball, the award is the highest and the most prestigious honor presented by the Basketball Hall of Fame other than enshrinement.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attles&#8217;s number 16 is retired by the Warriors and he attends every Warriors home game. He also serves as a team ambassador. <sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> On February 7, 2015, Attles&#8217; #22 was retired by North Carolina A&amp;T, the first ever retired by the team. He was inducted into the <a title=\"Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bay_Area_Sports_Hall_of_Fame\">Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame<\/a> in 1993.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Attles has been on the Warriors&#8217; payroll in one capacity or another for 58 years, the longest uninterrupted streak of any person for one team.
