Former Steelers safety Troy Polamalu will oversee the player side and former USC standout and executive J.K. McKay will oversee the team side. Advisors include former players Hines Ward and Justin Tuck, and Dick Ebersol.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>&#8220;The Alliance of American Football represents a fundamental shift in the way we approach professional sports,&#8221; Charlie Ebersol said at the time. &#8220;We believe fans and players are what&#8217;s most important, so our approach is simple &#8212; we&#8217;ve created an Alliance where fans and players share in the success of their teams.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>&#8220;Players have our commitment that we will seek the highest degree of safety and our support as we continue to invest in their success off the field with post-football career scholarships and financial wellness programs,&#8221; he continued. &#8220;With the expertise of Bill Polian and a leadership team of respected former All-Pro players and executives, we are committed to putting the best football product possible on the field every weekend, ensuring that 2018 will be the final year fans have to experience a six-month period without football.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>CBS will air the league&#8217;s debut game on Feb. 9, 2019, one week after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/nfl\/superbowl\/\" data-is-autolink=\"true\">Super Bowl<\/a> LIII on CBS. The network will also carry the Alliance of American Football&#8217;s championship game on the final weekend of April 2019. One regular-season Alliance game will air exclusively on CBS Sports Network each week as well. Each team will have 50 players each and will be built primarily through a regionally based draft. To differentiate the Alliance of American Football from its competitors, there will be no TV timeouts and 60 percent fewer commercials. Other differences will include no kickoffs and instead of onside kicks, the trailing team will receive the ball on their own 35-yard line facing fourth down and 10. But quarterbacks will be assigned via the draft, which will be broadcast live with commentary from Ward, Kurt Warner, Brent Stover, Dana Jacobson <\/strong>and<strong> Jason Fisher.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Here are all the details:<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Draft rules<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>Any quarterback already signed to the Alliance is eligible to be selected in the draft, which uses a &#8220;<\/strong>Protect or<strong> Pick&#8221; format. All signed quarterbacks are also allocated to the team located closest to their college or last NFL\/CFL team before the draft.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"native-story-ad-0\">\n<div id=\"native-story-middle-f908fa42aef53\" class=\"ad-native-story-middle \" data-ad=\"native-story-middle\"><strong>The &#8220;<\/strong>Protect or<strong> Pick&#8221; method allows each team to decide whether they&#8217;d rather protect one quarterback that&#8217;s been allocated to them or attempt to draft another one. It is set to commence play in February 2019, one week following the <a title=\"National Football League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Football_League\">National Football League<\/a>&#8216;s <a title=\"Super Bowl LIII\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Super_Bowl_LIII\">Super Bowl LIII<\/a> championship game. The AAF consists of eight centrally owned and operated teams, all but one <\/strong>are<strong> located in cities on or south of the <a title=\"35th parallel north\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/35th_parallel_north\">35th parallel<\/a> and all but one in metropolitan areas that have at least one <a title=\"Major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Major_professional_sports_leagues_in_the_United_States_and_Canada\">major professional sports franchise<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The AAF was announced on March 20, 2018, by filmmaker Charlie Ebersol. The AAF will be overseen by former <a title=\"National Football League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Football_League\">NFL<\/a> general manager Bill Polian, former <a title=\"Pittsburgh Steelers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pittsburgh_Steelers\">Pittsburgh Steelers<\/a> safety <a title=\"Troy Polamalu\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Troy_Polamalu\">Troy Polamalu<\/a> and executive <a title=\"John McKay Jr.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_McKay_Jr.\">J.K. McKay<\/a>. Advisers also include former Steelers receiver <a title=\"Hines Ward\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Hines_Ward\">Hines Ward<\/a>, former <a title=\"New York Giants\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/New_York_Giants\">New York Giants<\/a> <\/strong>and<strong> <a title=\"Oakland Raiders\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Oakland_Raiders\">Oakland Raiders<\/a> defensive end <a title=\"Justin Tuck\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Justin_Tuck\">Justin Tuck<\/a>, and Ebersol&#8217;s father, retired <a title=\"NBC Sports\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBC_Sports\">NBC Sports<\/a> executive (and co-founder of the short-lived <a title=\"XFL\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/XFL\">XFL<\/a>) <a title=\"Dick Ebersol\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dick_Ebersol\">Dick Ebersol<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-espn_1-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>To ensure professional-level football at launch, the AAF set out to hire coaches with professional football coaching and championship experience. <sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> On April 7, 2018, the first team, Orlando, was announced with its coach <a title=\"Steve Spurrier\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Spurrier\">Steve Spurrier<\/a>. By June 2018, the league had announced its eight inaugural teams and their cities. Regional drafts will be held with protection for local college players that are eligible.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On July 30, 2018, the Alliance announced the league had signed 100 players.<sup id=\"cite_ref-mca_4-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> In August 2018, the league held the Alliance Scouting Combine at three locations and four dates: August 4, <\/strong>2018<strong> in Los Angeles, California; August 18 in Houston, Texas <\/strong>and<strong> August 25\u201326 in Atlanta, Georgia. By August 24, 2018, 205 players were signed.
