He grew up in several places and was only able to see his sisters \u2018two or three times a year.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bright said: \u201cWe had a good care family. We had some good people looking after us, we were very lucky. It wasn\u2019t easy, it was hard at school. It was hard because you are the newcomers, people didn\u2019t see many black people at all.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>With lots of change going on in his life, there was one thing that was <\/strong>a constant<strong> \u2013 his footballing ability.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIn my school <\/strong>report<strong> it said, \u2018a budding athlete if I\u2019ve ever seen one\u2019 and my brother can remember the school teacher saying to another school teacher when we just finished playing football, \u2018Did you see the little black kid playing for us? If he isn\u2019t going to be a professional footballer no one will be.\u2019 Everyone could see that I wanted to be a footballer and that was all I used to say in class.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI played in an F.A. Cup Final in 1990, and I got a letter off that teacher &#8211; \u2018Mark, well done.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cpfc.co.uk\/siteassets\/images\/history\/bright.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"810\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSo, all through school I think I was trying to prepare myself for what I saw was the next move. Every footballer will tell you the same story, how they used to just sit there and dream of being whoever was there at the time at the club you wanted to play for.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screenname u-inlineBlock u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\"><a class=\"ProfileHeaderCard-screennameLink u-linkComplex js-nav\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Mark__Bright\"> <span class=\"username u-dir\" dir=\"ltr\">@<b class=\"u-linkComplex-target\">Mark__Bright<\/b><\/span> <\/a><\/h2>\n<p><strong>\u201cI don\u2019t think I wanted to prove anybody wrong I just wanted to prove myself right I suppose that I know what I want to do in life. You\u2019ve got to dream. You can\u2019t stop kids from dreaming, that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Even though Bright\u2019s talent <\/strong>were<strong> clear for everyone to see, when he left <\/strong>school<strong> he didn\u2019t get the apprenticeship he dreamed of as he looked to progress into the professional ranks of football.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-16320\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-bright-steve-coppell-and-ian-wright-300x221.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"221\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-bright-steve-coppell-and-ian-wright-300x221.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-bright-steve-coppell-and-ian-wright-768x565.jpg 768w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-bright-steve-coppell-and-ian-wright-1024x753.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-bright-steve-coppell-and-ian-wright-1080x794.jpg 1080w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/09\/mark-bright-steve-coppell-and-ian-wright.jpg 1239w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cGetting the disappointment of not getting an apprenticeship at Port Vale, was quite a shock to me and having to go get a job at an engineering factory.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI spent one year full-time at <\/strong>college<strong>, I couldn\u2019t stand it! I qualified as an engineer and played for Leek Town for two years and then got the opportunity to go back to Port Vale. So, it was a different route.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cThen from Port Vale, one good season and I <\/strong>was<strong> off to Leicester. And then from Leicester, I went to <\/strong>Palace<strong>. The rest, as they say, is history.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>When Bright was moving to SE25 he had a meeting with the manager, Steve Coppell, who could already see the potential for a successful strike partnership with a player he had already signed at the club, Ian Wright.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cpfc.co.uk\/siteassets\/images\/history\/wright--bright.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1440\" height=\"810\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cSteve Coppell said, \u2018I\u2019ve got a young player here, he\u2019s the best player I\u2019ve worked with in football.\u2019 \u2018He\u2019s just a bit <\/strong>loose<strong>, a loose cannon, he just needs reining in on the pitch, I think you can do it. Listen, if you hit it off, the press will have a field day with your names because he\u2019s a black kid from south London called Wright and obviously, Bright.\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI saw him play, I went to watch them play and thought, \u2018oh my god there\u2019s not much he can\u2019t do!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI think it\u2019s difficult to say it just clicked because we worked at it and we had several coaches who were at the club who helped us at the time. First of all, Coppell believed in us.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe got plenty of <\/strong>service<strong> as well. I think you have to look at it all, yes, we scored goals, but we had great service and the team benefitted from it by promotion, an FA Cup Final, third in the old league just before we started the Premier League. But a consecutive three great years for Palace. It\u2019s like being a loan manager. In the Premier <\/strong>League<strong> you have players who are not quite ready so they go out on loan. I\u2019m part of that process of trying to help.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cYou just take great pleasure in seeing someone from your academy playing in the first team because that\u2019s what it\u2019s all about. I enjoy it, I really do, but there\u2019s nothing that beats playing. Nothing comes even close.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.cpfc.co.uk\/siteassets\/images\/history\/history-section\/1984-1993\/mark-bright-steve-coppell-and-ian-wright.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1239\" height=\"911\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI\u2019m happy I achieved what I achieved. I would have loved to win something, of course, because that\u2019s why you\u2019re in the game. The game\u2019s about glory. I have a look at my career and I wouldn\u2019t swap it.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>I was in an engineering factory before I became a footballer. struggled in the lower half of the <a title=\"Football League First Division\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Football_League_First_Division\">First Division<\/a> table in the <a title=\"1984\u201385 Football League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1984%E2%80%9385_Football_League\">1984\u201385<\/a> and <a title=\"1985\u201386 Leicester City F.C. season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1985%E2%80%9386_Leicester_City_F.C._season\">1985\u201386<\/a> seasons. Bright scored six goals in 42 league games in his two seasons on <a title=\"Filbert Street\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Filbert_Street\">Filbert Street<\/a>. He was sold on by new manager <a title=\"Bryan Hamilton\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bryan_Hamilton\">Bryan Hamilton<\/a> early in the <a title=\"1986\u201387 Leicester City F.C. season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1986%E2%80%9387_Leicester_City_F.C._season\">1986\u201387<\/a> season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bright was signed to <a title=\"Crystal Palace F.C.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Crystal_Palace_F.C.\">Crystal Palace<\/a> by manager <a title=\"Steve Coppell\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steve_Coppell\">Steve Coppell<\/a> for a \u00a375,000 fee in November 1986. The &#8220;Eagles&#8221; were pressing for promotion out of the <a title=\"Football League Second Division\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Football_League_Second_Division\">Second Division<\/a><\/strong>,<strong> but finished two points outside the <\/strong>play-offs<strong> in <a title=\"1986\u201387 Football League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1986%E2%80%9387_Football_League\">1986\u201387<\/a>. In the <a title=\"1989 Football League play-offs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1989_Football_League_play-offs\">play-offs<\/a>, he scored in the semi-final victory over <a title=\"Swindon Town F.C.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Swindon_Town_F.C.\">Swindon Town<\/a>, which helped Palace to reach the <a title=\"1989 Football League Second Division play-off Final\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1989_Football_League_Second_Division_play-off_Final\">play-off final<\/a>; Palace then beat <a title=\"Blackburn Rovers F.C.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Blackburn_Rovers_F.C.\">Blackburn Rovers<\/a> 4\u20133 on aggregate, to win promotion to the top-flight.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>His 12 goals in the <a title=\"Football League First Division\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Football_League_First_Division\">First Division<\/a> in <a title=\"1989\u201390 Football League\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1989%E2%80%9390_Football_League\">1989\u201390<\/a> were an important part of Palace&#8217;s creditable showing, and it was Bright&#8217;s crashing drive at the start of the <\/strong>second-half<strong> that began Palace&#8217;s recovery against <a title=\"Liverpool F.C.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Liverpool_F.C.\">Liverpool<\/a> in the <a title=\"FA Cup\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FA_Cup\">FA Cup<\/a> semi-final and ultimately helped them to get to the <a title=\"1990 FA Cup Final\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1990_FA_Cup_Final\">final<\/a> at <a title=\"Wembley Stadium (1923)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Wembley_Stadium_(1923)\">Wembley<\/a>. Even after Wright had left the club Bright continued his great form for Palace, and his 17 First Division goals in <a title=\"1991\u201392 Crystal Palace F.C. season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1991%E2%80%9392_Crystal_Palace_F.C._season\">1991\u201392<\/a> was, at the time, a record return for a Palace striker in the top-flight; he was also the division&#8217;s seventh highest scorer.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Bright left Palace for <a title=\"Sheffield Wednesday F.C.\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C.\">Sheffield Wednesday<\/a> in September 1992 in a cash plus player exchange deal involving fellow striker <a title=\"Paul Williams (footballer, born 1965)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Williams_(footballer,_born_1965)\">Paul Williams<\/a>. He finished as the <a title=\"List of Sheffield Wednesday F.C. seasons\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C._seasons\">club&#8217;s top-scorer<\/a> for three consecutive seasons, taking pressure off club stalwart <a title=\"David Hirst (footballer)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/David_Hirst_(footballer)\">David Hirst<\/a>. He fared far less well in the final itself, controversially elbowing Arsenal defender <a title=\"Andy Linighan\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Andy_Linighan\">Andy Linighan<\/a> in the face, causing a broken nose. Later, with the scores level in the last minute of extra time, a heavily bandaged Linighan out-jumped Bright from a corner to score the winning goal.<sup id=\"cite_ref-ldd_6-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>With 19 goals, he was Wednesday&#8217;s highest scorer and the Premier League&#8217;s seventh highest scorer in <a title=\"1993\u201394 Sheffield Wednesday F.C. season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1993%E2%80%9394_Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C._season\">1993\u201394<\/a>. He then hit 13 goals in the <a title=\"1994\u201395 Sheffield Wednesday F.C. season\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1994%E2%80%9395_Sheffield_Wednesday_F.C._season\">1994\u201395<\/a> season, in manager <a title=\"Trevor Francis\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Trevor_Francis\">Trevor Francis<\/a>&#8216;s last season in charge.
