I\u2019m still popular with the Knicks and now this shoe,\u201d\u00a0he said to FN when Puma released a special edition Clyde Wraither Pack in 2016.<\/strong><\/article>\n<article class=\"c-content\"><strong>Two years later, the athletic giant continues to celebrate Frazier with <a href=\"https:\/\/footwearnews.com\/2018\/focus\/athletic-outdoor\/puma-deandre-ayton-walter-clyde-frazier-signs-deal-1202575700\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the deal of a lifetime \u2014 literally<\/a>.<\/strong><\/article>\n<article><\/article>\n<article class=\"c-content\"><strong>Today at the Puma Hoops HQ in Brooklyn, the brand honored the New York Knicks legend with a lifetime contract which subsequently marks its re-entry into the basketball category.\u00a0Frazier was in attendance for the surprise announcement, which also included a photo op session with the former NBA star and the chance to buy a pair of limited edition <a id=\"auto-tag_puma-clyde\" href=\"https:\/\/footwearnews.com\/t\/puma-clyde\/\" data-tag=\"puma-clyde\">Puma Clyde<\/a>\u2019s on-site.\u00a0Puma, being on trend with <a href=\"https:\/\/footwearnews.com\/2018\/fashion\/street-style\/london-fashion-week-mens-spring-2019-street-style-1202572271\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the \u201cgraf-feet-i\u201d movement<\/a>, also offered attendees the chance to have their kicks uniquely monogrammed by a sneaker customizer.<\/strong><\/article>\n<article><\/article>\n<article class=\"c-content\"><strong>\u201cHe led his team to the championship that year in impressive style both on and off the court. He represented the elite in on-court play,\u201d said Adam Petrick, Global Director of Brand and Marketing, as he recapped the shoe\u2019s inception in 1973 along with tidbits of Frazier\u2019s legacy.<\/strong><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14524\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/150px-Walt_frazier-103x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"103\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/150px-Walt_frazier-103x300.jpg 103w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/150px-Walt_frazier.jpg 150w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 103px) 100vw, 103px\" \/>\u201cIt\u2019s been 45 years since the beginning of this relationship,\u201d Petrick continued before Frazier chimed in \u201cwhat took you so long?\u201d<\/strong><strong>\u201cI guess it\u2019s overdue,\u201d added Petrick as the day\u2019s honoree made his way to the stage and officially inked his deal. After pen was put to paper, Frazier discussed designing the shoe and its memorable moments in history.<\/strong><strong>\u201cI came up with a lighter shoe, a little more padding on the inside and that was the beginning of the Puma Clyde and the shoe has been timeless. During my career I endorsed Puma and then there was a lull in the action. Then, the breakdancers brought it back. After that fling, the retro craze brought it back. Here we are 40-some years later \u2014 I\u2019m still synonymous with Puma Clyde and passing the tradition on to younger guys,\u201d said Frazier as he shared his gratitude for the distinction.<\/strong><\/article>\n<article><\/article>\n<article><\/article>\n<article><\/article>\n<article><\/article>\n<article class=\"c-content\"><strong>The 73-year-old is in fact passing the momentum down to a younger generation. Read more on this story here in FN\u2019s interview with Petrick.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"article-header\">\n<div class=\"entry-content entry-content-read-more\">\n<p><strong>Walt Frazier joined forces with probable No. 1 pick Deandre Ayton on Monday at a pop-up shop across the street from Barclays Center \u2014 site of Thursday night\u2019s NBA draft.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A new run of Puma Clyde sneakers are back, and the company, in its bid to plunge back into basketball, has added the versatile center as its top endorser.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The University of Arizona one-and-doner is expected to be selected No. 1 by the Suns. While Frazier interviewed Ayton on stage during a ceremony and told him to carry on the Puma tradition for another 40 years, the Knicks legend later told The Post he still believes 7-foot-3 Kristaps Porzingis should have the more noteworthy career.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ayton has been compared to Porzingis in that he\u2019s often been called a unicorn \u2014 the nickname first bestowed upon Porzingis by Kevin Durant during Porzingis\u2019 rookie year.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201c[Ayton] handles the ball well, very fluid with the ball,\u2019\u2019 Frazier said. \u201cBut he doesn\u2019t have the 3-ball range like KP, but he has the other stuff \u2014 movement agility around the basket, shot-blocking. Right now I don\u2019t think this kid has a 3 [-point shot] in his repertoire. It\u2019s something he has to acquire. Those [old-school] center guys can\u2019t compete now \u2014 they\u2019re relegated to the benches. But [Ayton] can guard guards. He has the ability to do that.\u2019\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Ayton told Frazier he was nearly 6-10 at age 13 and takes pride in guarding smaller guys. Ayton was asked about the unicorn moniker.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI just look at unicorn as a person who is a two-way player. A player who plays both ends of the floor,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">Thursday could mark a step in the direction of another Knicks\u2019 championship, though it seems so far away. The Knicks select ninth.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>While Ayton is the newest Puma salesman, Frazier is the first, joining in 1973. And Monday, after he arrived in the same white Rolls-Royce model he once owned, Frazier signed a lifetime contract. Frazier\u2019s line will sell for $73 \u2014 a number symbolic of the last time the Knicks won the NBA title.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cWe need a scorer,\u2019\u2019 Frazier said. \u201cI don\u2019t think they\u2019re going to go for another point guard. I think they should go with a wing. We have to have one of these [young point guards] pan out this year, step up and distinguish themselves.\u2019\u2019<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>If point guard Trae Young or small forward Michael Porter Jr. doesn\u2019t drop, the Knicks may have to decide between junior small forward Mikal Bridges of Villanova, a safer choice, or Kentucky freshman Kevin Knox, who had a powerful workout for the Knicks on Saturday, according to sources. DraftExpress, a noted mock draft, made the switch to Knox at nine soon after the workout.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Frazier, the best point guard the Knicks ever had, believes Frank Ntilikina, last year\u2019s first-round pick, still has to prove himself.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"unruly_in_article_placement\" data-unruly-ad-type=\"horizontal\">\n<div class=\"unruly_ia_furniture\">\n<div class=\"unruly_ia_disclosure\">\n<div class=\"unruly_ia_disclosure_text\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: 1.5;\">\u201cIt\u2019s a big year for him,\u2019\u2019 Frazier said. \u201cThis summer he\u2019s got to work diligently on his ball-handling and get more confidence in his shooting. He scored just 2 points in a 13-point loss against the Detroit Pistons in his NBA debut, and became one of five NBA players to be named to the NBA All-Rookie team during the 1967-68 NBA season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After averaging only 9.0 points per game during his rookie year, Frazier\u2019s 17.5 points, 7.9 assists, and 6.2 rebounds per game averages in his second year playing for New York made him one of the most improved players in the league.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><strong><span id=\"1970_Breakthrough_Year_and_First_NBA_Championship\" class=\"mw-headline\">1970 Breakthrough Year and First NBA Championship<\/span><\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><strong>Frazier was chosen for the All-Star team for the first time in his career during the 1969-70 NBA season. He would go on to be selected to 7 all-star teams over the course of his 10-year stint with the Knicks.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The Knicks were able to make it all the way to the NBA finals during the 1969-70 NBA playoffs thanks to the great play of both Walt Frazier and star teammate Willis Reed. However, in game 5, Reed suffered a horrific leg injury, making him unable to walk for the next few days. With Reed out, chances of the Knicks winning the championship were slim. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>However, Reed somehow returned to the series, playing the first two minutes of game 7 and scoring the first two points of the game. Reed was simply in too much pain to continue to play for the last 46 minutes of the game, meaning that it was up to Frazier to lead New York to the victory. Frazier scored 36 points, had 19 assists, 7 rebounds, and 6 steals that game. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>His astounding performance is arguably the greatest game in NBA playoff history, as it was the only reason why New York was able to defeat the Lakers and win the championship. ESPN is one of the many websites to call Frazier\u2019s incredible game the greatest game 7 performance ever.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-15705\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/06\/frazier_200-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" \/>Despite the championship win in 1970, the Knicks wanted to make some major changes to their team after the glorious season they had the year before. They traded for star shooting guard <a title=\"Earl Monroe\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Earl_Monroe\">Earl Monroe<\/a>, someone who always gave Walt Frazier trouble when defending him. Although not many people thought that he could fit in with Walt, he and Frazier soon become known as one of the best backcourts in the league, even earning the nickname \u201cthe Rolls Royce Backcourt.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>New York struggled mightily at first after the addition of Earl Monroe, and were unable to make it past the second round of the playoffs despite Frazier\u2019s great 20.4 points per game average during the second series.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Frazier and the Knicks once again won the NBA championship in 1973, defeating the <a title=\"Los Angeles Lakers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Los_Angeles_Lakers\">Los Angeles Lakers<\/a> in a quick 5-game series. Frazier\u2019s defense on <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NBA\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA\">NBA\u00a0<\/a>superstar <a title=\"Jerry West\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jerry_West\">Jerry West<\/a> played a major role in defeating the star-filled team. This would be the second and final NBA title the Knicks would ever win, meaning that Walt Frazier was a member of every championship Knick team in NBA history.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 1976, Frazier was selected for his seventh and final <a class=\"new\" title=\"NBA All-Star team (page does not exist)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/w\/index.php?title=NBA_All-Star_team&amp;action=edit&amp;redlink=1\">NBA All-Star team<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>While playing for them, he picked up the nickname &#8220;Clyde&#8221; because he wore a hat similar to that of <a title=\"Warren Beatty\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Warren_Beatty\">Warren Beatty<\/a>, who played <a title=\"Bonnie and Clyde\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bonnie_and_Clyde\">Clyde Barrow<\/a> in the <a title=\"1967 in film\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1967_in_film\">1967 movie<\/a><i><a title=\"Bonnie and Clyde (film)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bonnie_and_Clyde_(film)\">Bonnie and Clyde<\/a><\/i>. He was named to the <a title=\"NBA All-Rookie Team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_All-Rookie_Team\">NBA All-Rookie Team<\/a> in 1968.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Frazier held Knicks franchise records for most games (759), minutes played (28,995), field goals attempted (11,669), field goals made (5,736), free throws attempted (4,017), free throws made (3,145), assists (4,791) and points (14,617). <a title=\"Center (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Center_(basketball)\">Center<\/a><a title=\"Patrick Ewing\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Patrick_Ewing\">Patrick Ewing<\/a> eventually broke most of those records, but Frazier&#8217;s assists record still stands.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3><strong><span id=\"Cleveland_Cavaliers\" class=\"mw-headline\">Cleveland Cavaliers<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><strong>After ten years in New York, Frazier ended his career as a member of the <a title=\"Cleveland Cavaliers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cleveland_Cavaliers\">Cleveland Cavaliers<\/a>. Frazier was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers after the 1976-77 NBA season for the younger Jim Clemons. The trade left the NBA world stunned, as hundreds of people were furious that New York was willing to let go of arguably their greatest player in franchise history. Frazier played only 66 games over the course of three seasons with the Cavaliers. He retired in the 1979-80 NBA season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/article>\n<p><strong style=\"line-height: 1.5;\"><span id=\"Honors\" class=\"mw-headline\">Honors<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<article
