He\u2019s still chasing his 80th career victory, but what seemed improbable a year ago is now realistic.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>For the second straight week, Woods gave himself a chance on the back nine Sunday. Starting the last round of the Arnold Palmer Invitational five shots off the pace, he pulled within one of co-leaders Rory McIlroy and Henrik Stenson with a 13-foot birdie putt at par-4 13th, his third in four holes.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Woods\u2019, @TigerWoods , massive gallery at sun-scorched Bay Hill Club &amp; Lodge went bonkers. So did social media.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>But it wasn\u2019t to be. Playing an hour ahead of the leaders, Woods knew he needed additional birdies and couldn\u2019t sustain his Arnie-like charge. Poor tee shots at 16 and 17 resulted in bogeys, but Woods showed why he\u2019s an eight-time Bay Hill winner and 14-time major champion by burying a 12-foot par-saving putt at 18.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Woods closed with a 3-under-par 69 and tied for fifth at 10-under 278, eight strokes behind McIlroy, who fired a bogey-free 64. After tying for second last week at the Valspar Championship and placing 12th at the Honda Classic, Woods has collected three consecutive top 12 finishes for the first time since 2008.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>This, after undergoing four back surgeries since the spring of 2014, the most recent a spinal fusion procedure last April.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf you would have asked me at the beginning of the year if I would have had a chance to win two golf tournaments, I would have taken that in heartbeat,\u201d said the 42-year-old Woods. \u201cEverything was an unknown. He has now posted par or better in 10 straight starts and broken 70 in five of his last seven.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Woods being Woods, he wasn\u2019t pleased about his finish Sunday. At the par-5 16th, he couldn\u2019t decide whether to launch a driver over the dogleg, ease off with a soft cut, or crush a 3-wood. Woods chose the first option and pulled it out of bounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI didn\u2019t commit to it,\u201d said Woods, who birdied the hole the previous three rounds. \u201cI bailed out and hit a bad shot. That\u2019s on me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Even if he had reeled off three closing birdies, it wouldn\u2019t have been good enough.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI just knew I needed to keep making birdies,\u201d Woods said. \u201cThose guys had so many holes behind me. When I got to 16, I figured I had to play the last three holes 3-under to have a chance.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Paired with Bud Cauley, Woods parred the first two holes, then reached the par-5 fourth in two and two-putted for his first birdie. He almost another at the short par-4 fifth.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After launching a drive just left of the green into thick rough, he couldn\u2019t aim at the flag with his testy uphill second shot due a fronting bunker. Woods gouged the ball into the slope and would have found the green, but the ball hit a sprinkler head and came up short. Woods unleashed a majestic high-cut from 227 yards with a 6-iron that dropped softly, 13 feet from the hole. His eagle putt looked true and caught the right edge of the cup, but the ball refused to fall.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After ripping an iron down the fairway at the 456-yard par-4 eighth, Woods flagged an iron from 173 yards within six feet of the hole and nailed the birdie putt. He nearly holed his approach shot at the par-4 10th and drained an eight-foot birdie putt. Woods made another at the par-5 12th, splashing a long shot from the back bunker four feet from the cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI felt pretty good out there,\u201d said Woods. \u201cI hit the ball better than last week.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Once again, his short game was stellar. Woods converted 19 of 27 save opportunities. He made every putt inside nine feet, finished second for the week in strokes gained around the green, and tied for 11th in strokes gained putting.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The driver is still a work in progress. Although he averaged 306.7 yards, he hit 34 of 56 fairways. Woods was 11-under on the par-5s.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After only 18 rounds this year, Woods is projected to jump to 105th in the world rankings. He has also moved up to 35th in the Official World Golf Ranking FedEx Cup standing. Neither are small accomplishments and will improve his qualification status for World Golf Championships events.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Woods now turns his focus to the Masters in two weeks at Augusta National Golf Club. A four-time champion, he has been unable to compete because of injuries since 2015, when he tied for 17th. He\u2019s also planning a pre-tournament visit to reacquaint himself with the course.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cIf I can play with no pain and I can feel like I can make golf swings, I\u2019ll figure it out,\u201d said Woods. \u201cI\u2019m starting to piece it together tournament by tournament, and each tournament\u2019s gotten a little crisper and a little better.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"row\">\n<div class=\"news-single-footer news-single-footer--tiger small-12 large-8 large-offset-2 column\">\n<div class=\"row expanded align-justify\"><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"news-single-more__post-container row small-up-1 medium-up-2\"><\/div>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Eldrick Tont &#8220;Tiger&#8221; Woods<sup id=\"cite_ref-decree_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>\u00a0is an American <a title=\"Professional golfer\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Professional_golfer\">professional golfer<\/a> who is the most successful golfer of all time, and is considered THE GREATEST OF ALL-TIME, BY MOST!!!! He has been one of the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Forbes' list of world's highest-paid athletes\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Forbes%27_list_of_world%27s_highest-paid_athletes\">highest-paid athletes<\/a> in the world for several years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Following an outstanding junior, college, and amateur career, Woods was 20 years old when he turned professional at the end of summer in 1996. By the end of April 1997, he had won three <a title=\"PGA Tour\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PGA_Tour\">PGA Tour<\/a> events in addition to his first major, the <a title=\"1997 Masters Tournament\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1997_Masters_Tournament\">1997 Masters<\/a>. Woods won this tournament by 12 strokes in a record-breaking performance and earned $486,000. He first reached the <a title=\"List of World Number One male golfers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_World_Number_One_male_golfers\">number one position<\/a> in the <a title=\"Official World Golf Ranking\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Official_World_Golf_Ranking\">world rankings<\/a> in June 1997, less than a year after turning pro. Throughout the 2000s, Woods was the dominant force in golf\u2014he won the\u00a0<a title=\"2000 U.S. Open (golf)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2000_U.S._Open_(golf)\">2000 U.S. Open<\/a> by an incredible 15-shot margin. He was the top-ranked golfer in the world from August 1999 to September 2004 (264 weeks) and again from June 2005 to October 2010 (281 weeks).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Woods took a hiatus from professional golf from December 2009 to early April 2010 in order to focus on difficult issues in his marriage. He and his estranged wife <a title=\"Elin Nordegren\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Elin_Nordegren\">Elin<\/a> eventually divorced. He has won 14 professional <a title=\"Men's major golf championships\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Men%27s_major_golf_championships\">major golf championships<\/a>, where he trails only <a title=\"Jack Nicklaus\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jack_Nicklaus\">Jack Nicklaus<\/a> who leads with 18, and 79 <a title=\"PGA Tour\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PGA_Tour\">PGA Tour<\/a> events, second all-time behind <a title=\"Sam Snead\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Sam_Snead\">Sam Snead<\/a>(82).<sup id=\"cite_ref-16\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Woods leads all active golfers in <a title=\"List of men's major championships winning golfers\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_men%27s_major_championships_winning_golfers\">career major wins<\/a> and <a title=\"List of golfers with most PGA Tour wins\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_golfers_with_most_PGA_Tour_wins\">career PGA Tour wins<\/a>. He is the youngest player to achieve the career <a title=\"Grand Slam (golf)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Slam_(golf)\">Grand Slam<\/a>, and the youngest and fastest to win 50 tournaments on tour.
