By the time he took the court in his first basketball game for the <a title=\"Navy Midshipmen men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Navy_Midshipmen_men%27s_basketball\">Navy Midshipmen men&#8217;s basketball team<\/a>, he had grown to 6\u00a0ft 9\u00a0in (2.06\u00a0m), and over the course of his college basketball career he grew to 7\u00a0ft 0\u00a0in (2.13\u00a0m).<sup id=\"cite_ref-gao198709_5-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-6\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He began college with no expectations of playing in the NBA,\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-montville19960429_3-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>but in Robinson&#8217;s final two years he was a consensus <a title=\"NCAA Men's Basketball All-Americans\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NCAA_Men%27s_Basketball_All-Americans\">All-American<\/a> and won college basketball&#8217;s two most prestigious player awards, the <a title=\"Naismith College Player of the Year\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naismith_College_Player_of_the_Year\">Naismith<\/a> and <a title=\"John R. Wooden Award\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_R._Wooden_Award\">Wooden Awards<\/a>, as a Naval Academy first classman (senior). In 1986, Robinson led Navy, a number seven seed, within a game of the Final Four before falling to Duke in the East Regional Final. Robinson played his first three years for the Midshipmen under <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Paul Evans (basketball coach)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Paul_Evans_(basketball_coach)\">Paul Evans<\/a> (who left Navy to coach at Pitt) and his senior season under former <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Georgia Bulldogs men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georgia_Bulldogs_men%27s_basketball\">University of Georgia<\/a> interim Head Coach <a title=\"Pete Herrmann\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Pete_Herrmann\">Pete Herrmann<\/a>. Upon graduation, he became eligible for the <a title=\"1987 NBA draft\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1987_NBA_draft\">1987 NBA draft<\/a> and was selected by the <a title=\"San Antonio Spurs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Antonio_Spurs\">San Antonio Spurs<\/a> with the first overall pick; however, the Spurs had to wait two years because he had to fulfill his active-duty obligation with the Navy.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14981\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DR-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DR-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DR-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/DR.jpg 340w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>Robinson @DavidtheAdmiral was 6\u00a0ft. 8\u00a0in. when he was admitted to the Naval Academy, two inches above the height limit, but received a waiver from the <a title=\"List of Superintendents of the United States Naval Academy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Superintendents_of_the_United_States_Naval_Academy\">Superintendent of the Academy<\/a>. Robinson considered leaving the academy after his second year, before incurring an obligation to serve in active duty. He decided to stay after discussing with the Superintendent the likelihood that his height would prevent serving at sea as an <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Unrestricted line\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Unrestricted_line\">unrestricted line<\/a> officer, hurting his naval career, and might make it impossible for him to be commissioned at all. As a compromise, <a title=\"United States Secretary of the Navy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Secretary_of_the_Navy\">Secretary of the Navy<\/a> <a title=\"John Lehman\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/John_Lehman\">John Lehman<\/a> allowed Robinson to train for and receive his commission as a staff officer in the <a title=\"Civil Engineer Corps\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Civil_Engineer_Corps\">Civil Engineer Corps<\/a> community. As a result, Robinson was commissioned in the <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"United States Naval Reserves\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Naval_Reserves\">Naval Reserves<\/a> and had to serve only an initial active-duty obligation for two years. After graduating from the Naval Academy, Robinson became a civil engineering officer at the <a title=\"Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naval_Submarine_Base_Kings_Bay\">Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay<\/a> in <a title=\"Georgia (U.S. state)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Georgia_(U.S._state)\">Georgia<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-gao198709_5-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He was regularly featured in recruiting materials for the service. Despite the nickname &#8220;Admiral&#8221;, Robinson&#8217;s actual rank upon fulfilling his service commitment was <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Lieutenant, Junior Grade\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Lieutenant,_Junior_Grade\">Lieutenant, Junior Grade<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-7\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>David Maurice Robinson\u00a0is an American former professional <a title=\"Basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Basketball\">basketball<\/a> player, who played <a title=\"Center (basketball)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Center_(basketball)\">center<\/a> for the <a title=\"San Antonio Spurs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Antonio_Spurs\">San Antonio Spurs<\/a> in the <a title=\"National Basketball Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/National_Basketball_Association\">National Basketball Association<\/a> (NBA) for his entire career. Based on his prior service as an officer in the <a title=\"United States Navy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/United_States_Navy\">United States Navy<\/a>, Robinson earned the nickname &#8220;The Admiral&#8221;.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14982\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ADMIRAL-236x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"236\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ADMIRAL-236x300.jpg 236w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/ADMIRAL.jpg 550w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 236px) 100vw, 236px\" \/>Robinson is a 10-time <a title=\"NBA All-Star Game\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_All-Star_Game\">NBA All-Star<\/a>, the 1995 <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NBA MVP\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_MVP\">NBA MVP<\/a>, a two-time <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"NBA Champion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/NBA_Champion\">NBA Champion<\/a> (1999 and 2003), a two-time\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Olympic Gold Medal\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Olympic_Gold_Medal\">Olympic Gold Medal<\/a> winner (1992, 1996), a two-time <a title=\"Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Naismith_Memorial_Basketball_Hall_of_Fame\">Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame<\/a> inductee (2009 for his individual career, 2010 as a member of the <a title=\"1992 United States men's Olympic basketball team\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/1992_United_States_men%27s_Olympic_basketball_team\">1992 United States men&#8217;s Olympic basketball team<\/a>), and a two-time <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/U.S._Olympic_Hall_of_Fame\">U.S. Olympic Hall of Fame<\/a> inductee (2008 individually, 2009 as a member of the 1992 Olympic team).\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>He is widely considered one of the greatest centers in both college basketball and NBA history.<sup id=\"cite_ref-2\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> To date, Robinson is the only player from the Naval Academy to play in the NBA.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2008 Robinson partnered with Daniel Bassichis, formerly of <a title=\"Goldman Sachs\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goldman_Sachs\">Goldman Sachs<\/a> and a board member of The Carver Academy, to form Admiral Capital Group.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-30\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Admiral Capital Group is a private equity firm whose mission is to invest in opportunities that can provide both financial and social returns. Robinson&#8217;s primary motivation in starting Admiral Capital was to create a source of additional financial support for The Carver Academy. Its portfolio is worth more than $100 million and includes nine upscale hotels and office buildings across the U.S. as well as Centerplate, one of the largest hospitality companies in the world, and Academy Sports + Outdoors, a sports, outdoors and lifestyle retailer with over 160 stores. Admiral Capital Group also partnered with Living Cities to form the Admiral Center, a non-profit created to support other athletes and entertainers with their philanthropic initiatives. Robinson is also co-owner of a Jaguar Land Rover Dealership in San Juan, Texas.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Robinson married Valerie Hoggatt in 1991. They have three sons, David Jr., Corey, and Justin. <a title=\"Corey Robinson (wide receiver)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Corey_Robinson_(wide_receiver)\">Corey<\/a> attends <a title=\"University of Notre Dame\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_Notre_Dame\">Notre Dame<\/a> and was a member of the <a title=\"Notre Dame Fighting Irish football\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Notre_Dame_Fighting_Irish_football\">football team<\/a>, playing wide receiver,<sup id=\"cite_ref-20\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> before ending his playing career on medical advice prior to what would have been his senior season in 2016 due to multiple <a title=\"Concussion\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Concussion\">concussions<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-21\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> He will remain very active on campus in his final undergraduate year, having been elected in February 2016 as student body president for the 2016\u201317 school year.\u00a0<sup id=\"cite_ref-22\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Justin, a 6&#8217;8&#8243; (2.03 m) forward in basketball and a two-time all-state selection in Texas, has attended <a title=\"Duke University\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duke_University\">Duke<\/a> since August 2015. He was initially <a title=\"College recruiting\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/College_recruiting\">recruited<\/a> to the <a title=\"Duke Blue Devils men's basketball\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Duke_Blue_Devils_men%27s_basketball\">Duke team<\/a> as a &#8220;preferred <a title=\"Walk-on (sports)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Walk-on_(sports)\">walk-on<\/a>&#8221; with the opportunity to eventually earn a <a title=\"Athletic scholarship\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Athletic_scholarship\">scholarship<\/a>, but was placed on scholarship before his arrival at Duke.<sup id=\"cite_ref-23\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-14984\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/images.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"191\" height=\"263\" \/>Robinson identifies his religious affiliation as <a title=\"Christianity\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Christianity\">Christian<\/a>.<sup id=\"cite_ref-24\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Robinson has stated that he became a Christian on June 8, 1991 after being encouraged to read the Bible.<sup id=\"cite_ref-Leigh_Montville_25-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-Leigh_Montville_25-1\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2001, Robinson founded and funded the $9 million <a title=\"Carver Academy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Carver_Academy\">Carver Academy<\/a> in San Antonio, a non-profit private school named for\u00a0<a title=\"George Washington Carver\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/George_Washington_Carver\">George Washington Carver<\/a> to provide more opportunities for inner-city children. In 2012, the school became a public charter school and its name changed to IDEA Carver. Robinson continues to be a very active participant in the school&#8217;s day-to-day activities.<sup id=\"cite_ref-26\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><sup id=\"cite_ref-27\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2011, Robinson earned a Master of Arts in Administration (with concentration in organizational development) from the <a title=\"University of the Incarnate Word\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/University_of_the_Incarnate_Word\">University of the Incarnate Word<\/a> to better &#8220;understand how businesses work and how to build them.&#8221;.<sup id=\"cite_ref-sanantoniomag.com_28-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beyond his founding of Carver Academy, Robinson is well known as a <a title=\"Philanthropy\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Philanthropy\">philanthropist<\/a>.
