\u201cIn our market, when he does commit, there\u2019s a certain level of expectation [in ticket sales]. But certainly what we\u2019ve seen this year is about a 40 percent increase in activity online overall. From last year, if I had to put the number to it, it\u2019s probably closer to a 30 percent increase.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tiger Mania lives, especially in this market, San Diego County. Native San Diegan Phil Mickelson might be king here, but Woods reigns. He has won nine times at Torrey Pines \u2014 seven times in this tournament, once in the U.S. Open and once in the Junior World Championship.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When Woods begins play on Thursday, it will mark his first appearance in a PGA Tour event since playing and missing the cut in the Farmers Insurance Open last year. He played only one more competitive round, at the Dubai Desert Classic, before shutting his season down and undergoing back surgery in April.<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/section>\n

\"\"Monday broke peacefully at sun-drenched Torrey Pines, with soft breezes drifting in off the Pacific Ocean and a sense of calm floating over this 36-hole public golf resort.<\/strong>Don\u2019t expect the tranquility to last.<\/strong>Tiger Woods, now 42, will make his first start on the PGA Tour in a year this week in the Farmers Insurance Open, a tournament he\u2019s won a record seven times (this was also the setting for the last of his 14th\u00a0major championship triumphs, that coming in the 2008 U.S. Open). While he\u2019s ranked 647th\u00a0in the world these days, hasn\u2019t won since 2013 and is making yet another comeback, Woods still moves the needle like no other.<\/strong>In other words, get ready to hear some noise.<\/strong>\u201cThe commotion and attention he brings to a tournament, the crowds he brings out, the energy level he brings out is amplified 10 times,\u201d Billy Horschel said Monday in the quiet PXG trailer parked at Torrey Pines. \u201cWe miss him. Dustin (Johnson), Jordan (Spieth), Rory (McIlroy), Rickie (Fowler), Justin (Thomas) \u2026 they are all great players and they bring energy to a tournament.<\/strong>\u201cBut it\u2019s nothing like Tiger.\u201d<\/strong>\"\"Among the biggest fans this week will be Woods\u2019 colleagues, all eager to see what the former world No. 1 for a record 683 weeks, the guy who has 79 Tour titles and 14 majors on his resume, can do. The feeling was much the same last year at Torrey Pines where Woods returned to the PGA Tour for his first start in 18 months. But his bad back betrayed him, he missed the cut, then withdrew after one round the following week in the Middle East and was out until December.<\/strong>But this time looks and feels different, many players said. A glimpse of what could be seen was on display last month in the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas, where Woods was making his first start in 10 months following spinal fusion back surgery in April 2017, the fourth surgical procedure to his back since 2014. Woods looked happy and healthy on the island paradise, his swing free and pain free yet still powerful, and he tied for ninth in the 18-man field.<\/strong>\"\"\u201cI saw some good stuff,\u201d Horschel said. \u201cI think he\u2019s going to come out and shock some people.\u201d<\/strong>Rory McIlroy saw some good stuff, too. McIlroy played with Woods in Florida ahead of the Hero World Challenge. Then McIlroy, who started his comeback after three months of inactivity with a tie for third in last week\u2019s Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, saw what Woods did in the Bahamas.<\/strong>\u201cThis is a different Tiger,\u201d McIlroy told the\u00a0Belfast Telegraph. \u201cHe could stun the world again.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Woods didn\u2019t stun Justin Thomas in the Bahamas. After playing with Woods ahead of the Hero, Thomas expected to see some solid play. Paired with Woods in the first and fourth rounds, the reigning PGA Tour player of the year saw just that.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cIf he stays healthy, I really do think he’ll have a great year,\u201d Thomas said last month. \u201cWe\u2019re just going to have to wait and find out.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Patrick Reed is looking forward to finding out. Reed played a practice round with Woods in the Bahamas and said Monday that Woods got \u201ca taste for competition and played well in the Hero.\u201d Reed thinks Woods will make consistent improvements as the weeks pass this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"\u201cI think he\u2019s just going to build off of that and get better and better,\u201d Reed said. \u201cThis week will be a true test, because you\u2019ve got some thick rough, a long golf course and some cold weather. In the Bahamas we had pretty generous fairways, it was warm and the rough was not penalizing. That\u2019s not the case this week.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201c \u2026 He\u2019s the greatest golfer that has ever played on the planet. I grew up when he was in his prime and I saw what he can do. I want him to come back because I want a taste of that, to see what it\u2019s like to play Tiger when he\u2019s at his best. And he could get there. Eldrick Tont “Tiger” Woods\u00a0<\/sup>is an American professional golfer<\/a> who is the most successful golfer of all time. He is the only golfer in history to have been the highest-paid athlete<\/a> in the world.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Following an outstanding junior, college, and amateur career, Woods was 20 years old when he turned professional at the end of the summer in 1996. By April 1997, he had already won three PGA tour events in addition to his first major, the 1997 Masters<\/a>. Woods won this tournament by 12 strokes in a record-breaking performance and pocketed $486,000. He first reached the number one position<\/a> in the world rankings<\/a> in June 1997, less than a year after turning pro. Throughout the 2000s, Woods was the dominant force in golf. He was the top-ranked golfer in the world from August 1999 to September 2004 (264 weeks) and again from June 2005 to October 2010 (281 weeks).<\/strong><\/p>\n
