MELBOURNE\u2014Roger Federer<\/a>\u00a0was on fire at the Australian Open\u00a0on Saturday\u00a0night, winning his third-round match against Richard Gasquet<\/a> in just an hour and 59 minutes, 6-2, 7-5, 6-4.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here are five amazing stats from the five-time Australian Open champion\u2019s win over the Frenchman:<\/strong><\/p>\n

1. He scored his milestone 90th career match win at the Australian Open. Federer\u2019s 90 career match wins at the Australian Open is an Open era record by a long way\u2014Novak Djokovic has the second-most, recording his 61st with his third-round win over Albert Ramos-Vinolas\u00a0on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n

2. He\u2019s now won 17 of his last 18 meetings with Gasquet. Since losing his first meeting to Gasquet at Monte Carlo in 2005, Federer has won 17 of the last 18, the only loss coming at Rome in 2011. And Federer barely lost those two matches, losing to Gasquet\u00a07-6 in the third both times.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

Federer is now 4-0 against Gasquet in Grand Slams and 12-0 against him on hardcourts, too.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Even scarier: Federer has now won 22 sets in a row against the former world No.7.<\/strong><\/p>\n

3. He was only broken once in 15 service games\u2014and barely. Serving while up two sets and 4-2 in the third, Federer had three game points to hold serve but was broken\u2014the only time he lost serve in 15 service games on the night. Meanwhile, he broke Gasquet in five of his 15 service games.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s a taste of the kind of form Federer showed the packed crowd on Rod Laver Arena:<\/strong><\/p>\n

4. He\u2019s now on a 10-match winning streak at the Australian Open. With his seven wins last year and three more so far this year, Federer has officially hit double digits in his winning streak here.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is\u00a0actually the first time Federer has\u00a0won 10 matches in a row at a specific Grand Slam\u00a0in seven years\u2014the last time he got this many in a row was at the Australian Open between 2010 and 2011 (he won the title in 2010 and reached the semifinals in 2011 before falling to Djokovic in a tight three-setter).<\/strong><\/p>\n

5. He\u2019s through to the round of 16 at the Australian Open for the 16th time. This is Federer\u2019s 16th time in the second week of the Aussie Open, and if history is anything to go by, his run probably won\u2019t end here\u2014the last 13 times he\u2019s gotten to the round of 16, he\u2019s gotten to at least the semifinals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Next up for Federer is Marton Fucsovics, who\u2019s through to the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time. Among the unseeded Hungarian\u2019s victims along the way was No. 13 seed Sam Querrey.<\/strong><\/p>\n

MELBOURNE, Australia — It was expected to be the match of the round. Angelique Kerber ensured it never became a contest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 2016 Australian Open winner routed Maria Sharapova 6-1, 6-3 in the third-round match on Saturday night, meaning she’ll be the only Grand Slam champion in the fourth round of the women’s draw.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Five-time major winner Sharapova was back at Melbourne Park for the first time since 2016, when a failed doping test led to a 15-month ban from tennis.<\/strong><\/p>\n

After two comfortable wins while seeded players fell in upsets in the first two rounds and was growing in confidence but had no answers for Kerber, who is on a 12-match winning streak in a kind of comeback of her own after a sliding down the rankings last year.<\/span><\/strong>“I learned a lot from the last 12, 24 months. I had a great 2016 and last year was a little tougher,” Kerber said, reflecting on how her year-end ranking dropped from No. 1 to 21 when she failed to defend her Australian or U.S. Open titles. “Anybody who knows me knows I never give up.”<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>The Romanian survived the mother of all third-round scares against defiant American Lauren Davis, 4-6 6-4 15-13, to move into the round of 16.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Halep, who has built a reputation of her own for scrambling for every point, in every game, of every match, must have felt like a terrier barking at her own reflection.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Davis, who surged 13 spots to No. 63 in the world off the back of the gutsy performance, refused to give an inch.<\/strong><\/p>\n
