CES 2018: These tech transportation startups are using disruption to drive the future<\/h1>\n

For the past century, many Americans have been accustomed to only the Big 3 \u2014 Ford, Chrysler and GM when it comes to homegrown automakers, but in the last few years technology has added new lanes to the highway, so to speak. The new vehicle-manufacturing landscape is not one of scale just yet (Tesla sold more than <\/span>76,000 cars<\/a> in 2016. By comparison, GM sold <\/span>nearly 10 million<\/a>), but one of opportunity.<\/span><\/h1>\n<\/header>\n

No where is this more evident than in Las Vegas at the global technology show CES, where money expert Clark Howard and team are witnessing first-hand the companies driving innovation.<\/p>\n

Meet Olli, the multi-passenger\u00a0autonomous shuttle<\/h1>\n

Local Motors, a Phoenix, Arizona-based tech company that focuses on co-creating vehicles through what it calls \u201clow volume manufacturing,\u201d is at CES this week showing off Olli, its self-driving shuttle bus.\u00a0The company sees Olli as a solution for travel within neighborhoods, college campuses and urban centers.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Unlike the assembly line of yesteryear, Local Motors builds Olli with the help of customers and like-minded innovators, meaning its design is open-source. On its website<\/a>, the company calls it \u201can active process where brands and their customers work together with solvers, designers, and engineers to accelerate product and technology development.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0With a handful of microfactories in places like Knoxville, Tennessee; National Harbor, Maryland; and Tempe, Arizona, Local Motors has secured\u00a0$1 billion in financing to build its vehicles, including\u00a0third-party operational support to keep them on the roads.<\/strong><\/div>\n
Started in 2008 by retired Marine and Harvard Business School grad Jay Rogers, the company has struck partnerships with some of the biggest corporations in the United States, including IBM, General Electric, Hewlett-Packard and the Army. Local Motors has printed an operational 3-D vehicle as well as all-terrain tanks for the military.<\/strong><\/div>\n

Speaking to Forbes last year, Rogers said what makes his company different is that it listens to what people want and invites them to help turn it into a reality. \u201cIt is about changing a 100-year paradigm in mass manufacturing. We are now using the crowd. We are using a bespoke community that we build with suppliers and customers. Then we are changing the way we think about manufacturing.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The company is touting an accessible Olli, which can help the elderly and those with impairments with their mobile needs. \u201cAnd with IBM Watson helping with the interactions, it certainly is friendly,\u201d it says on its website.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Navya, self-driving courier for the public sector<\/strong><\/h1>\n

Also showcasing its wares at CES is Nayva, an international company that specializes in autonomous vehicles.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Geared toward the public sector, Nayva\u2019s Autonom Shuttle has positioned itself as a transportation solution for hospitals and city governments across the South Pacific, Europe, and increasingly, the United States. The French company with offices in the United States hopes the global emphasis on reducing congestion in urban centers will help it integrate into the daily lives of people who are looking for new ways of mobility.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a deal announced this week, Keolis, an international company that makes transit systems, signed on to bring Nayva\u2019s Autonom Cab, an electric taxi, to the United States.\u00a0\u201cWith the introduction of vehicles such as Navya\u2019s Autonom Cab we hope to kick-start a sea change in the available options for urban mobility in cities across\u00a0North America\u00a0and beyond,\u201d Nayva CEO\u00a0Christophe Sapet said, according to Yahoo News<\/a>. \u201cAutonomous, personalized and shared, this unique mobility solution answers the major challenges urban populations face traveling in and around cities.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

In addition to self-driving vehicles, Navya makes electric ones, as well. \u201cThese are vehicles that merge motor, digital and robotic technology and are capable of solving the problem of the first and last mile, both in cities and on private sites,\u201d says the company\u2019s website<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

CES 2018: French Tech Startups Are Taking Over Innovation Exhibit<\/strong><\/h1>\n
For the third year in a row, France will be the first most represented country outside of the U.S. – which is showcasing 280 startups – at CES’\u00a0Eureka Park, with more than 274 startups, representing every major industry, from the latest in self-driving vehicles, smart cities, AI, sports tech, robotics, health and fitness tech and more.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

French startups have growing international ambitions<\/strong><\/p>\n

For the first time at CES, French startups now represent over 30%\u00a0of all the international companies showcasing at the Eureka Park, far more than\u00a0Holland (60) or China (55).<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

“This is a huge jump, more than 50% from last year,” explained Adrien Cabo, in charge of the international development for the French Tech scene. “And for the first time at CES, French startups now represent 1\/3\u00a0of all the international companies showcased at the Eureka Park, far more\u00a0than Holland or China combined.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, because of the amount of French startups and the way they\u00a0are scattered around the show floor – by France’s geographical regions or states \u00a0(Paris, Normandy, Provence…) rather than by industries or technologies – it’s very hard to actually find the ones that could\u00a0best\u00a0match your interest.<\/strong><\/div>\n
