She is the reigning Overall World Cup champion and the reigning Olympic and <a title=\"FIS Alpine World Ski Championships 2017 \u2013 Women's slalom\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/FIS_Alpine_World_Ski_Championships_2017_%E2%80%93_Women%27s_slalom\">world champion<\/a> in slalom,<sup id=\"cite_ref-scfbtw13_2-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> and a four-time winner of the World Cup discipline title in that event.<sup id=\"cite_ref-:0_3-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup> Shiffrin is the youngest slalom champion in Olympic alpine skiing history, at 18 years and 345 days.<\/strong><\/div>\n<p><strong>The American skier,\u00a0<a class=\"u-underline\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/sport\/mikaela-shiffrin\" data-link-name=\"auto-linked-tag\" data-component=\"auto-linked-tag\">Mikaela Shiffrin,<\/a> continued her remarkable run by winning the giant slalom at Kranjska Gora on Saturday, her eighth win of the season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><sup id=\"cite_ref-Slalom_7-0\" class=\"reference\"><\/sup>Two months before turning 23, the Colorado native has already won half as many World Cup races as the winningest female ski racer of all time, American team-mate Lindsey Vonn.<\/strong><\/p>\n<aside class=\"element element-rich-link element-rich-link--upgraded\" data-component=\"rich-link\" data-link-name=\"rich-link-1 | 1\">\n<div class=\"rich-link tone-news--item \">\n<div class=\"rich-link__container\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__image-container u-responsive-ratio\"><strong><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i.guim.co.uk\/img\/media\/ef5b1ee1a748b5943d034012f49c675ab44c6aa9\/0_259_3488_2093\/master\/3488.jpg?w=460&amp;q=55&amp;auto=format&amp;usm=12&amp;fit=max&amp;s=405e9ffcabf4ac19221a4be49837bdc0\" \/><\/strong><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__header\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"rich-link__read-more\">\n<div class=\"rich-link__arrow\"><strong><span style=\"line-height: inherit;\">While the 33-year-old Vonn added her 78th career win at a super-G in France last month, Shiffrin earned her 39th victory at a giant slalom on Saturday.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p><strong>It was her third World Cup win in a row in all disciplines and her sixth in the last seven races, her form peaking with the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang just one month away. She became the first female skier with three straight wins at the start of a year since Vreni Schneider of Switzerland achieved the feat in 1989.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cHa, so much math,\u201d Shiffrin said. \u201cTo be honest, I am not really counting. It\u2019s cool to think, maybe I can get 41 this season, or maybe 45. I want to show the people watching this that I am confident with my skiing and that I am being aggressive.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Battling a virus and with rain falling on the course, Shiffrin lost more than half a second of a big first-run lead but still beat world giant slalom champion Tessa Worley of France by 0.31 seconds.<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"dfp-ad--inline1\" class=\"js-ad-slot ad-slot ad-slot--inline ad-slot--inline1 ad-slot--rendered\" data-link-name=\"ad slot inline1\" data-name=\"inline1\" data-mobile=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|fluid\" data-desktop=\"1,1|2,2|300,250|620,1|620,350|fluid\" data-google-query-id=\"CKTu9t2Px9gCFUauTwodUv8PTg\">\n<div id=\"google_ads_iframe_\/59666047\/theguardian.com\/sport\/article\/ng_6__container__\" class=\"ad-slot__content\"><strong style=\"line-height: inherit;\">Sofia Goggia of Italy was 0.91 behind in third, followed by three more racers all within one second of Shiffrin\u2019s winning time. Goggia\u2019s Italian teammate Federica Brignone was 0.98 behind in sixth after winning the previous GS, in Lienz eight days ago.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>\u201cIt is super fun to ski, I am super psyched about it,\u201d said Shiffrin, who now leads the overall as well as all discipline standings except for super-G.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The US ski team said Shiffrin had been \u201cbattling a cold this week\u201d but traveled across the Italian border on Friday to train in Tarvisio.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cA lot of the girls have been sick so I didn\u2019t feel like it was an excuse for today. I wanted to come down and charge,\u201d said Shiffrin, who has won six of the last seven World Cup events.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wearing bib seven, Shiffrin avoided mistakes in an aggressive opening run to build a 0.86-second lead over Worley. I was loose and really aggressive. That\u2019s really exciting for me. I just tried to go out aggressive and it worked that run.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Worley won the World Cup GS title last year but is still awaiting her first win of the season. Even a strong second run wasn\u2019t sufficient on Saturday.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI pushed hard, and I knew I had to because Mikaela did such a great first run,\u201d Worley said. \u201cI wanted to be in the game for the win. It wasn\u2019t enough but I am happy with the race today.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Goggia, who was last season\u2019s revelation with 13 podiums including two wins on the Olympic course in Jeongseon, is also still winless.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-14267\" src=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mikaela-Shiffrin-Gold-Medal-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mikaela-Shiffrin-Gold-Medal-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/myboysay.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/Mikaela-Shiffrin-Gold-Medal.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/>\u201cThe first part of my season was pretty tough but today I am happy to have found my inner Goggia spirit again,\u201d said the Italian after her third top-three result of the season.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>A slalom on the same course is set for Sunday.
