She won the 2017 Australian Open in the early stages of her pregnancy, and she has not competed since then.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"story-body-supplemental\">\n<div class=\"story-body story-body-1\">\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"231\" data-total-count=\"596\"><strong>Williams, 36, formerly ranked No. 1 in the world, has not played since clinching a 23rd Grand Slam singles title 11 months ago. She was pregnant during that tournament and took time off to give birth to Alexis Olympia in September.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p class=\"story-body-text story-content\" data-para-count=\"192\" data-total-count=\"788\"><strong>Williams will return with a match against the French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia. The <a title=\"Women's Tennis Association\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Women%27s_Tennis_Association\">Women&#8217;s Tennis Association<\/a> (WTA) has ranked her world No. 1 in singles on eight separate occasions over the last 15 years from 2002 to 2017. She became the world No. 1 for the first time on July 8, 2002. On the sixth occasion, she held the ranking for <a title=\"List of WTA number 1 ranked tennis players\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_WTA_number_1_ranked_tennis_players#Weeks_at_No._1\">186 consecutive weeks<\/a>, tying the record set by <a title=\"Steffi Graf\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steffi_Graf\">Steffi Graf<\/a> for the most consecutive weeks as world No. 1 by a female tennis player. In total, she has been world No. 1 for 319 weeks, which ranks her <a title=\"Open Era tennis records \u2013 women's singles\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_Era_tennis_records_%E2%80%93_women%27s_singles\">third in the Open Era\u00a0<\/a>among female tennis players behind <a title=\"Steffi Graf\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steffi_Graf\">Graf<\/a> and <a title=\"Martina Navratilova\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Martina_Navratilova\">Martina Navratilova<\/a>. Her record of 39 <a title=\"Grand Slam (tennis)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Grand_Slam_(tennis)\">Grand Slam<\/a> titles puts her third on the all-time list and second in the Open Era: 23 in singles, 14 in women&#8217;s doubles, and 2 in mixed doubles. She is the most recent female player to have held all four Grand Slam singles titles simultaneously (2002\u201303 and 2014\u201315) and the third player to achieve this record twice after <a title=\"Rod Laver\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Rod_Laver\">Rod Laver\u00a0<\/a>and <a title=\"Steffi Graf\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Steffi_Graf\">Steffi Graf<\/a>. She is also, together with her sister <a title=\"Venus Williams\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Venus_Williams\">Venus<\/a>, the most recent player to have held all four Grand Slam women&#8217;s doubles titles simultaneously (2009\u201310).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Her total of 23 Grand Slam singles titles marks the record for the most Grand Slam wins by a tennis player in the\u00a0<a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"Open Era\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Open_Era\">Open Era<\/a>,\u00a0and is <a title=\"List of Grand Slam women's singles champions\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/List_of_Grand_Slam_women%27s_singles_champions#Most_Grand_Slam_tournament_singles_titles\">second on the all-time<\/a> list behind <a title=\"Margaret Court\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Margaret_Court\">Margaret Court<\/a> (24).<span style=\"font-size: 13.3333px; line-height: 20px;\">\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0She is the only tennis player in history (man or woman) to have won singles titles at least six times in three of the four Grand Slam tournaments, and the only player ever to have won two of the four Grand Slams seven times each (seven Wimbledon titles and seven Australian Open titles). She is also the only tennis player to have won 10 Grand Slam singles titles in two separate decades.
