\"\"Corinthians striker Jo “Jo\u00e3o Alves de Assis Silva”\u00a0<\/b> was named Brazil\u2019s Player of the Year by sportswriters on Monday, a day after ending the season as joint top scorer in the country\u2019s first division.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jo<\/strong>, who played at Manchester City and Everton, scored 18 goals to tie with Fluminense\u2019s Henrique Dourado.<\/strong><\/p>\n

His club Corinthians won the league and had three of the 11 players in the team of the year \u2013 the same number as Copa Libertadores champions Gremio.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cWe are delighted, we worked hard and we deserved it so this Golden Ball goes to Corinthians fans and my team mates who deserve it as well,\u201d Jo said at a ceremony in Rio de Janeiro.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Goal of the Season award went to Atletico Mineiro\u2019s Otero for his 50-yard lob against Coritiba.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jo became on Sunday the top goal-scorer of the Brazilian championship. Jo is in such form that Brazil coach Tite believes he could make the team for the World Cup.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jo has 18 goals this season, the same as Fluminense forward Henrique Dourado. Brazilian media picked him as the best player of the national championship as his Corinthians team won its seventh title perhaps because some his goals were decisive in derbies against Palmeiras, Sao Paulo, and Santos.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"The reason why Tite is observing Jo closely is how different he is from other Brazilian strikers. At 1.88 meters (6-foot-2), Jo is taller than Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus (1.70, 5-foot-7) and Liverpool’s Roberto Firmino (1.75, 5-foot-9). He is an inch taller than Sport Recife’s Diego Souza (1.85, 6-foot-1) a midfielder improvised as a center forward by Tite.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The striker netted only two headers for Corinthians but his role as target man in front of the box created goals for the Sao Paulo-based team.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

His experience is also attractive: Jo played in the 2014 World Cup and knows Russia from playing there for four years for CSKA Moscow.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Tite is watching other alternatives (but) my characteristics can help me,” Jo told The Associated Press last week at Corinthians’ training ground.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“Besides, I am a different person now that I stopped drinking and going out. I became a leader. If I have an opportunity to be in the World Cup again I will not try to do all at once on the pitch like I did as a sub in 2014. I have grown.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Tite said after the World Cup draw in Russia on Friday that Jo’s strong season made him a recall contender.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I still have openings; we don’t have a final list. Jo had a great season, other players had great seasons, too. We have to keep watching everyone closely,” Tite said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Few expected Jo to rediscover his best form.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Corinthians executives still had fresh memories from the day that Jo travelled to Brazil for Christmas despite having a match with Everton shortly after the festivities. Or the day he missed a trip with Internacional because he was drinking and partying until sunrise. Or the day he was suspended by Atletico Mineiro after security personnel accused him of hosting women at the team’s hotel.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"“I only changed after my wife left me and Atletico fans that idolized me started forsaking me,” Jo said. “My personal and my professional lives were sinking. I decided to change everything.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Corinthians signed him at no cost at the end of 2016 after the striker had a disappointing season in China. Corinthians’ lack of confidence in Jo’s future was evident by its attempts to sign 39-year-old striker Didier Drogba, who refused the offer.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I’ve always been a fan of Drogba’s, but I was the one who did what needed to be done here,” Jo said.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having earned the championship for his boyhood club, he doesn’t feel like leaving. But he doesn’t rule out a return to European leagues.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Jo offered an anecdote about his new persona. After Fluminense was beaten 3-1 to clinch the Brazilian title in November, a team sponsor offered him a pint of beer on the pitch, but the offer was declined.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“I knew there was no alcohol in it, but I would look like a hypocrite if I drank it,” Jo said. “God has given me a lot of wisdom to see the path in front of me. I regret that I didn’t enjoy my opportunities in Europe as much as I should. So I am not running any risk of making those mistakes again.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

Jo\u00e3o Alves de Assis Silva (born 20 March 1987), known as J\u00f4,\u00a0\u00a0is a Brazilian professional footballer<\/a> who plays as a striker<\/a> for Brazilian club Corinthians<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He has previously played for Corinthians<\/a>, CSKA Moscow<\/a>, Manchester City<\/a>, Everton<\/a>, Galatasaray<\/a>, Internacional<\/a> andAtl\u00e9tico Mineiro<\/a>. J\u00f4 made his full international debut for Brazil in 2007, and was in the squads which took bronze at the 2008 Olympics and won the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup<\/a>, and also played at the 2014 FIFA World Cup<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/strong>On 31 July 2008, Manchester City<\/a> signed J\u00f4 for an undisclosed value thought to be worth about \u00a319 million, a club record at the time.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0He scored just one league goal in 4 matches for Manchester City, against Portsmouth,\u00a0<\/span>and also scored a brace in the UEFA Cup against Omonia Nicosia<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0J\u00f4 found it difficult to establish himself in the City team and featured in just 6 games at the start of the 2008\u201309<\/a> season.<\/strong><\/p>\n

J\u00f4 joined Everton<\/a> on loan in February 2009, until the end of the 2008\u201309<\/a> season.\u00a0He made his debut at Goodison Park<\/a> against Bolton Wanderers<\/a>, scoring twice in a 3\u20130 win.\u00a0<\/sup> He finished the season with five goals from twelve league appearances, though missed out on Everton’s run to the 2009 FA Cup Final<\/a> as he was cup-tied<\/a> after playing the last 20 minutes of Manchester City’s third round<\/a> defeat to Nottingham Forest<\/a>.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

He returned to Manchester City at the end of the season,\u00a0but re-joined Everton on a season-long loan for 2009\u201310<\/a>,<\/sup> with the option of a permanent move at the end of that period.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0His first competitive goal in the loan spell was scored against AEK Athens<\/a> in aEuropa League<\/a> group game<\/a>, which Everton went on to win 4\u20130.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0After returning to Brazil without permission over the Christmas period, Everton manager David Moyes<\/a> suspended him for a breach of conduct.\u00a0<\/sup>After Everton, he returned to Manchester City and was loaned to Galatasaray<\/a> on the very same day.\u00a0<\/span>He scored three goals during his loan spell at Galatasaray.<\/strong><\/p>\n

He returned to Manchester City after his loan spell at Galatasaray expired. J\u00f4 scored in his first game back against Portland Timbers<\/a>and was also successful in further pre-season friendlies<\/a> against New York Red Bulls<\/a>, Borussia Dortmund<\/a> and Valencia CF<\/a> respectively. He then went on to score in the Europa League win against Salzburg,<\/span>\u00a0and in the League Cup<\/a> loss to West Bromwich Albion<\/a>,\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0his fourth and fifth goals for the club.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 21 November 2010 J\u00f4 made a rare start for Manchester City in his team’s 4\u20131 win over Fulham<\/a>. J\u00f4 also featured in Manchester City’s 3\u20131 win away to West Ham<\/a>before Christmas and scored City’s only goal in a 1\u20131 draw with Juventus<\/a> in the UEFA Europa League<\/a>. City won the 2010\u201311 FA Cup<\/a>, and despite being left out of the squad for the final<\/a>, he did contribute five appearances earlier in the cup run.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n

Sport Club Internacional<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

On 20 July 2011, following a disappointing spell at Manchester City<\/a>, only scoring six goals in 41 appearances, J\u00f4 decided to return to Brazil and join Sport Club Internacional<\/a>.<\/strong><\/h3>\n

<\/span>Atl\u00e9tico Mineiro<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n

In May 2012, J\u00f4 signed with fellow Brazilian side Atl\u00e9tico Mineiro<\/a>, where he formed a striking partnership with Ronaldinho<\/a>. He won the Campeonato Mineiro<\/a> and helped the club win its first Copa Libertadores<\/a> title in 2013, scoring in the final game at Mineir\u00e3o<\/a> against Olimpia<\/a> and finishing as the top scorer in the competition with 7 goals.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0He also played in both games of Atl\u00e9tico’s Recopa Sudamericana<\/a> win in 2014.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On 4 November 2014, after a string of acts of indiscipline, J\u00f4 was reported released from the club by officials.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0On 10 January 2015, however, he was reinstated to the squad along with Emerson Concei\u00e7\u00e3o<\/a> and Andr\u00e9<\/a>, who had also been suspended, by manager Levir Culpi<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span>On May 3, 2015, after more than 1 year without scoring a single goal, J\u00f4 came up as a substitute in the 2015 Campeonato Mineiro<\/a> final against Caldense<\/a> and scored the winning goal of the match from an offside position, as Atl\u00e9tico won 2-1 and were crowned champions of the competition for the 43rd time.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In July 2015, J\u00f4 signed a deal with Emirati club Al Shabab<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

On February 5, 2016, J\u00f4 Joined Jiangsu Suning<\/a> of the Chinese Super League<\/a>.<\/sup><\/strong><\/h3>\n

J\u00f4 signed a three-year deal, on 2 November 2016, to mark his return to his first club Corinthians<\/a>. Despite of signing for the club in November 2016, he was only permitted to play from 2017 onwards.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In 2017, the Brazilian lived a return full of uncertainties augmented by the media putting pressure on Corinthians that was mocked as being the “fourth force of S\u00e3o Paulo state” and his recent past of exaggerated festivities.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0However, he answered as a professional player performing many consistent and some delightful matches during 2017’s season<\/a>. J\u00f4 became known as “Rei dos Cl\u00e1ssicos” that could be translated as king of derbys, after scoring decisive goals against all of Corinthians regional rivals.<\/strong><\/p>\n

<\/sup>On 15 November 2017, J\u00f4 scored two goals as Corinthians beat Fluminense<\/a> 3\u20131 and helped his team clinch the league title,\u00a0<\/span>and this way, he confirmed his best league season scoring more than 17 goals in Campeonato Brasileiro<\/a><\/sup>. Corinthians obtained its seventh trophy in the competition, one of the most disputed leagues in the world; known by its traditional rivalries, fanatic supporters, athletes formation and frequent presence of its teams in Intercontinental Cup<\/a> and FIFA Club World Cup<\/a>.\u00a0<\/sup> A very curious fact that demonstrates J\u00f4’s huge change of conduct was seen after the confirmation of Corinthians 2017 league title when he literally refused a cup of beer on the pitch celebration.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n

J\u00f4 received his first call-up to the Brazil national football team<\/a> in May 2007 and was in the squad to play against England<\/a>, but did not play. He then made his international debut in a friendly against Turkey<\/a>, in June 2007 aged 20.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

On 7 June 2013, J\u00f4 was called to replace Leandro Dami\u00e3o<\/a> for 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup<\/a>, who was withdrawn from the original squad due to an injury.<\/sup> In the opening match on 15 June 2013, he scored his first international goal in a 3\u20130 victory over Japan<\/a>. He then scored his second goal for Brazil<\/a> against Mexico<\/a> on 19 June 2013.<\/strong><\/p>\n

J\u00f4 was selected in the Brazilian squad for the 2014 FIFA World Cup<\/a>. He made his first appearance in the competition in the second group game, coming on for the last 22 minutes in place of Fred<\/a> in a goalless draw with Mexico<\/a>. He made another substitute appearance for the same player in the Round of 16 match against Chile<\/a>, and played the full 90 minutes of the third-place play-off defeat to the Netherlands<\/a>.<\/strong><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n

After signing of Tite<\/a> for Brazilian team<\/a>, J\u00f4 believes he can be called up again to Sele\u00e7\u00e3o<\/i>. According to him, it only depends on his working for Corinthians<\/a>, club where he came back to play for in 2017.<\/sup><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
