He was born in <\/span><a style=\"line-height: inherit;\" title=\"North Walsham\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/North_Walsham\">North Walsham<\/a><span style=\"line-height: inherit;\">, Norfolk, United Kingdom. He reached a career-high world ranking of World No. 1 in January 2012.<\/span>Willstrop has a large build for a squash player, being 6\u00a0feet 3\u00a0inches (191\u00a0cm) and 194 pounds (88\u00a0kg). In the same year, he established himself as the world&#8217;s top junior player, claiming both the European and the World junior titles.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Willstrop went on to be one of the youngest players ever to play for the senior England team, representing his country for the first time at both the European and <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"World Team Squash Championships\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/World_Team_Squash_Championships\">World Team Squash Championships<\/a> in 2003.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In 2004, he won the Pakistan Open title in <a title=\"Islamabad\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Islamabad\">Islamabad<\/a> (upsetting <a title=\"Amr Shabana\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Amr_Shabana\">Amr Shabana<\/a> in the quarter-finals) in his first appearance in a <a class=\"mw-redirect\" title=\"PSA Super Series\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PSA_Super_Series\">PSA Super Series<\/a> final. In 2005, he finished runner-up at the <a title=\"British Open Squash Championships\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/British_Open_Squash_Championships\">British Open<\/a> as the seventh seed, then followed this by lifting the <a title=\"Qatar Classic\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Qatar_Classic\">Qatar Classic<\/a> trophy in only his second Super Series final appearance. This first-time success led to Willstrop leaping six places to a career-high World No. 2 in the PSA world rankings published that December. The new ranking catapulted Willstrop to the position of top-ranked Englishman \u2013 which led to his promotion to squad number one in the England team for the 2005 World Team Championships in Pakistan later in the month, when he led the team to victory for the first time in eight years.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the 2006 <a title=\"Commonwealth Games\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Commonwealth_Games\">Commonwealth Games<\/a> in <a title=\"Melbourne\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Melbourne\">Melbourne<\/a>, Willstrop partnered <a title=\"Vicky Botwright\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Vicky_Botwright\">Vicky Botwright<\/a> to a Silver Medal in the Mixed Doubles. Willstrop held match balls at 10\u20139 and 11\u201310 in the fifth game, but Palmer ultimately won 11\u20139, 11\u20139, 8\u201311, 6\u201311, 11\u201310 (3\u20132).<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In January 2010, Willstrop won his first <a title=\"Tournament of Champions (squash)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tournament_of_Champions_(squash)\">Tournament of Champions<\/a> title in New York, defeating World Number 1 <a title=\"Ramy Ashour\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ramy_Ashour\">Ramy Ashour<\/a> in the final and dropping only one game during the whole tournament.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In the singles final of the <a title=\"Squash at the 2010 Commonwealth Games\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Squash_at_the_2010_Commonwealth_Games\">2010 Commonwealth Games<\/a> in <a title=\"Delhi\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Delhi\">Delhi<\/a>, Willstrop was defeated by compatriot <a title=\"Nick Matthew\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nick_Matthew\">Nick Matthew<\/a> 11\u20136, 11\u20137, 11\u20137. With those 3 <a title=\"PSA World Series\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/PSA_World_Series\">PSA World Series<\/a> titles, Willstrop put himself into First place in the PSA World Series rankings as well as ensuring his place at the top of the world rankings list. Willstrop succeeded fellow Englishman <a title=\"Nick Matthew\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Nick_Matthew\">Nick Matthew<\/a> as the World No. 1 in January 2012. Matthew regained his World No. 1 spot by defeating Willstrop in the <a title=\"Tournament of Champions (squash)\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Tournament_of_Champions_(squash)\">Tournament
