The typical approach is jumping from stoop to stoop, putting out one fire after another. That was the case recently after racist comments attributed to the Los Angeles Clippers’ owner, Donald Sterling, were made public. Moving fast to avert a growing crisis, N.B.A. Commissioner Adam Silver promptly barred Sterling for life. The fans cheered. The players cheered. And the N.B.A. immediately retreated behind closed doors. A potentially enlightening conversation about race in the league was effectively over. This is often how it goes. Until the next fire. And then the next.

A day before he arrived in New York, Williams was in Washington for a televised discussion about race in sports. This time it was Sterling. On another day, it might have focused on Riley Cooper, the white Philadelphia Eagles receiver who angrily yelled a racial epithet at a black security guard at a concert, or P. K. Subban, the black Montreal Canadiens player who was subjected to a stream of vile messages on social media after scoring a winning goal in a playoff game against the Boston Bruins.

Williams would prefer to talk about all those things.
