Stanford’s Simone Manuel wrapped up her time at the FINA World Championships in Budapest, Hungary this weekend with five gold medals and a bronze<\/a>. The capper was a world record in the 400-meter medley relay along with American teammates Kathleen Baker (Cal), Lilly King and Kelsi Worrell.<\/span><\/strong><\/div>\n

American swimmer\u00a0Simone Manuel\u00a0proved her winning performance in the 100-meter freestyle at the Olympics in Rio de Janeiro wasn\u2019t a fluke on Friday when she added another gold to her growing medal collection by winning the event at the FINA World Championships in Budapest.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Manuel, who had never medaled \u00a0in the event at worlds before, set a new American record on Friday, winning in 52.27 seconds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The 20-year-old also beat out heavy favorite Sarah Sjostrom of Sweden, who holds the world record in the event and had days earlier swam the length in 51.71 seconds as part of Sweden\u2019s 4\u00d7100-meter freestyle relay team. (Incidentally, Team USA, which included Manuel, ended up winning that event, too.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

\"\"Sjostrom, 23, was unable to reproduce that superstar time, however, and finished the race on Friday with a time of 52.31 to take second place. Denmark\u2019s Pernille Blume rounded out the podium with a time of 52.69.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The lone other American in the 100-meter freestyle finals, Mallory Comerford, came in fourth, with a time of 52.77.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The race didn\u2019t begin with Manuel in the lead. Sjostrom\u2019s pace for the first 50 meters had the Swede on track to break her world record. However, after the turn, Sjostrom\u2019s pace tapered off while Manuel\u2019s held steady, and within the last 10 meters she was able to pass her opponent.<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cI just saw an incredible mirror image of exactly what happened a year ago,\u201d the announcer on NBC Sports\u2019 broadcast<\/a>. \u201cUnbelievable.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

The announcer was referring to Manuel\u2019s Olympic performance that saw her come back in the final meters of that race to touch the wall again ahead of Sjostrom. In that case, Canada\u2019s\u00a0Penny Oleksiak tied Manuel for the gold, but on Friday, Manuel owned the podium on her own. (Oleksiak finished in sixth place with a time of 52.94.)<\/strong><\/p>\n

Despite surprising the swimming world again, Manuel didn\u2019t offer much in the way of reaction on Friday. She simply glanced up a few times at the results then hugged her opponents. She kept her smile for atop the podium.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Simone Ashley Manuel (born August 2, 1996) is an American competition swimmer<\/a> specializing in sprint freestyle<\/a>. At the 2016 Rio Olympics<\/a>, she won two gold and two silver medals: gold in the 100-meter freestyle<\/a> and the 4×100-meter medley, and silver in the 50-meter freestyle and the 4\u00d7100-meter freestyle relay<\/a>. In winning the 100-meter freestyle, a tie with Penny Oleksiak<\/a> of Canada, Manuel became the first African-American woman to win an individual Olympic gold in swimming and set an Olympic record<\/a> and an American record<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Manuel also holds three world records as a member of a relay team, and she is a two-time individual National Collegiate Athletic Association<\/a> champion, becoming one of the first three African American women to place in the top three spots in the 100-yard freestyle event in any Division I NCAA Swimming Championship. Since 2014, she has attended Stanford University<\/a>, where she swims for the Stanford Cardinal<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n
